Customer Reviews

Loaded with features! I'm impressed with this little radio! I've had it for 3 months now. I like to use a product for a while before writing a review. For a small radio it has very good sound and volume. The headphone output is stereo also. I have a lodgitech speaker system that I use with my tv, I plugged the little ka29 up and it rocks! I guess it covers pretty much all of the useful sw spectrum, no longwave, nothing on longwave anyway. No aircraft band, so what right. Reception and sensitivity are good. Sometimes I clip a 40 ft wire antenna to it and it does really well on sw. Loaded with features especially for under $40. A couple of really nice features are, key pad for direct entry and auto search. This is the first radio that I have owned with autosearch. If you like to tune through seeing what you can pick up, arm and fingers get tired. With auto search you push the button and after a few minutes the radio has gone through all the bands and stored into temporary memory all the channels it is receiving. Anyway I'd heard of it and read about this feature on some radios but until now, didn't know that I needed it. I love this feature! If you are interested in this radio enough that you are reading reviews on it, you already know about the recording features. I have recorded music from fm and played it through my speakers and can tell you it sounds great. The only two things that I don't like is: I can't set a timer to record a program while I'm asleep and I tryed recording using the auxiliary input, playback sounds like crap but recording from the radio itself is awesome. Guess I'd knock a half point to 4 and half but for all you get and the price I give it 5. 5Ticks all the boxes for me I love this little radio (I have two of them). While I have many more expensive radios, this one is my go-to because it ticks all the boxes for me. It's decent for AM DXing and shortwave, can play MP3 audio from *two* different sources - MicroSD card OR a USB stick, uses a cheap and easy to find Nokia phone rechargeable battery, has a backlit screen for use at night, voice memo recorder and Aux input for recording, and is small enough to slip into a pocket. For the price, it has an amazing amount of features! 5Neat device with some minor issues It's an Ok receiver, not the most sensitive. In general I like it however it has some flaws, that while are annoying do not stop it from being functional.PROs- Nice form factor- Like the rechargeable Nokia style battery for power- Very nice LCD display- Great sound for such a small deviceCONs- Navigating the file system with folders and lots of files is very slow and jittery.- Large lyric files (like for a 30min radio show) crash the radio. Lyrics for a 3 minute song were fine.- Sort of deaf on all of the RF bands. This radio is not good for DX.I am hoping for a new version or a firmware update that addresses the MP3 related cons above. With those issues ironed out it would be a very solid little device, however, even with the flaws it is not too bad. 3I like the radio I like the radio. It is pocket size and has a very good sound for its size. It has stereo sound. There are however negatives. It uses an old nokia cell phone battery which is discontinued. I am not a fan of a lithium cell phone battery to power a radio. Non of my older phones with this type of battery had a long battery longevity after continuous use and it did not require as much power as a radio. The radio requires a 500 ma charger and uses a mini plug in the phone. Most cell phones today use a micro plug and charge at a higher rate 1 to 2.1 Amps. Kaito warns higher than 500 ma charger can cause the battery not to function properly. If the battery is low or dies Kaito, warns that you can not plug it in to the charger to power the radio, so you can listen or record, since this generates static noise. If you are away from home and the radio dies, unless you have an extra battery, you are out of luck. I would prefer replaceable AA batteries which would play longer, easy available and could be replaced on the run. The battery was one half charged and ran out during a recording off the radio. Lost the file. Some of the radios of this size can also use either rechargeable AA or Alklines. It would however add a little weight to the radio. The small display does not provide much information about the file recorded. Not even the date after recorded.. You can not change the volume once you start to record off the radio. When the display times out to save power after a few seconds it is black and you can not even see the radio frequency. Plugging in the micro sd card, if you are not careful, can result in it falling in the case. The card is also located on the bottom of the radio could fall out.. The radio easily picks up static in the AM band and needs to be turned carefully for clear signal. The keys sometimes have to be pressed several times to get results. The instructions are ok however the print is very small. I blew the instructions up 180% and printed them to read. If they gave you a case, the original instructions could be kept in it to refer too. I bought a case for the radio in 99 cent store. The functions are not intuitive and if not used often could be confusing. There is a need to refer to the instructions. The radio can be charged by computer. However pluging it into my windows 10 computer resulted in repetitive error message and the computer constant rebooting. Use a 500 ma charger.Despite shortcomings there is currently is not much else out there. It will serve the purpose now. 3I am happy with this purchase. It does a lot, most well. I've had several days with my new Kaito KA29 DSP digital, pocket-able radio. The box and the manual title it "A Radio for all". It is pretty much that! The DSP is the digital signal processor that makes this computer a radio. It locks on the station and takes the place of the old AFC - automatic frequency control. You receive AM/MW, FM, and 12 band SW. The AM and FM bands are selectable for your part of the world, as this is a world radio. All bands receive better than anyone familiar with the old transistor or later IC transistor radios would expect. The AM/MW is especially sensitive at night when there are many stations and a crowded frequency band to select from. In my area, north of Detroit, MI., I was able to hear a station new to me between 560 and 580 AM, two local stations. That station was 570 AM, WKBN - Youngstown, OH., a 5Kw talk station, about 180 miles as the crow flies. This I'm sure was due to the DSP processor. I'm used to hearing the mega watt clear channel stations from distant points at night, but this will give me something to play with for awhile, searching for the weaker stations. The FM similarly has very good reception. I received a new to me FM station, 102.3 FM - WGRT, from Port Huron, MI., broadcasting as Lexington, MI.As for SW, I like the 12 bands chosen and the ability to hear news and music from around the world. You really need a guide to know when to listen for English broadcasts. This radio has a very good MP3, WMA, WAV music player from either a usb thumb drive or a micro SD card. There is an Equalizer control for best tone quality. Stereo is available through earphones. The radio will also record from on-air or by built in microphone to the usb or SD card. Very convenient for someone trying to DX distant stations.Don't overlook the built in speaker, while small at 40mm, it has amazing tone and volume - close to the larger Meloson M7 and M8 radios from this same seller. The Meloson M7 is still my kitchen radio. This radio comes with a lithium cellphone type battery that charges through a mini usb port in the radio via a usb cord included. It holds the charge for a long time, just like better cellphones.Yeah, it does a lot, most well. It will fit in your shirt pocket easily and stands on it's own. There is a tendency to pick up noise from fingers near the display, but when you set it down out of your hand it is clear. It should be a great travel radio and with it's auto tune feature, it is easy to find stations in the area you are visiting. Each band has many memories for storing favorite stations.I am happy with this purchase of the Kaito KA29, from Electronnix, through Amazon. 5Fantastic, versatile little DSP radio. Great little radio.I decided to take a chance, and figured what the hell, I wasn't going to be out a lot of dough if it didn't live up to the hype.Fairly sensitive, I live in a noisy RF area, and under the circumstances, it does pull in some AM and FM stations, although not many in the SW bands.Very easy to understand, and fairly intuitive, takes a bit to figure out, but by no means rocket science. The radio also has an external USB and Micro SD card ports which are great, I just transfer my music onto a micro SD card, pop it in, and voila! my music collection at my fingertips as well as a neat little radio to listen to while I'm working. The stereo input port works great for listening to my Ipod, and the sound clarity is fantastic considering the size of this unit.I haven't had the chance to use the recording features, but so far so good with the rest! All in all, this is an unbelievable bargain, and absolutely worth every penny. 5Good, but after 20 days... It is good, but after 20 days of use thr speaker did not work anymore. When taken to repair, technician found that the speaker has the impedance of 4 ohms and output power of 3 Watts which is, as I though, the problem: the speaker would have a very low output power for the volume that handles the radio. I'm using it with good quality stereo headphones and it works fine. You can not choose mini SD or USB when both are installed, always read the USB when this happens. If you use the device daily you have to recharge the battery every night. Can not get a spare speaker. Where can I get a similar speaker or more Watts, like in the video? If they improve these details, especially the speaker, would be to qualify almost 5 stars. Thank you very much and keep improving 2Nice looking, great sounding plus it has the SD record feature which is impossible to find now a days... Beautiful digital screen, great sound for such a small speaker. The radio is the size of my hand about the size of a a deck of cards and a half. The record function works well and the sound is crystal clear of the sound recorded. The radio does work while charging.....unlike what another person posted on Amazon, but, there is a little trick behind this....you have to 1. plug in the radio to charge 2. shut the radio off 3. turn the radio back on 4. then it will work.SD micro card- is another issue. I tried for 40 minutes to insert the card because it would not accept my card. After calling tech support for Kaito, they told me to return the radio- i didn't want to do that. I turned the card upside down, so that the face with the writing on it was not facing me (of the sd micro card) and then kept pushing at different angles until it finally fit, and works. the first few times I tried to do that the card didn't go into the slot and almost got lost in a small void between the sd slot and the radio it self.....so be careful that you are inserting it correctly. It wasn't easy to do and is definitely something they need to correct. Any how, the radio looks and sounds great, and for the price, it isn't bad at all. 5High qulity, Muti-functions, very useful Kaito KA29 Digitized Radio Receive is a very good radio reciver.1) The sensitivity is perfect. My home is 50 miles from center of Los Angeles. I get all channels using this receiver for AM & FM. The result is very stable.2) It can record what you are listening to Micro SD card or USB stick. This function is very useful. The recorded result is very clean with no noise. Easy to operate. One touch can enter to record mode. One touch can stop it.3) It is multi functional beside the Radio. It can act as a MP3 player from SD card or USB. It provide EQ control, the payer provides very good music quality.4) It has a handset output. So it is easy to connect high power speaker system get best results.5) It is a microphone recorder form built-in or external microphone.6) During MP3 playing, it provides A-B repeat function. So it can be used as a Repeat Reading Device which may help to learn the foreign language.7) It is using Li-Iron battery instead of other rechargeable battery. So easy to handle and it is very light. It can be hold in hand as a toy.I am very happy with the price, functions, and qulity. 5Everything you wanted BUT, DID NOT LAST LONG AT ALL!!! My wife has broken two Sangean radios now. They are...quite bulky and large. Although there seemed to be other brand of recording radios, this one caught my attention due to the positive reviews. We were pleasantly surprised. It is small but shockingly loud. I was in another room and heard a loud sound and went into the bedroom to see where it was called Ming from. It was that radio. And the tonal quality is nice too.It beats the Sangean radios too in that it is far less prone to static noise....The $$ value is quite exceptional as well....my wife has had it for about a month now and loves it.SEPTEMBER 17, 2018 ADDED COMMENTSWELL, AFTER THREE MONTHS, THE RADIO JUST STOPPED WORKING. WE BOUGHT NEW BATTERIES, TRIED LOOKING ONLINE FOR A WAY TO RESET IT.....ITS GONE!WHICH IS A SHAME. WE REALLY LIKED THIS RADIO. IT WAS LOUD, EASY TO OPERATE (FOR US) LIGHT WEIGHT, SMALL, EASY TO CARRY FROM ONE ROOM TO ANOTHER...I AM SURE IF I THOUGHT ABOUT IT I COULD COME UP WITH MORE POSITIVE THINGS TO WRITE....BUT THEY MEAN NOTHING IF IT ONLY LASTED THREE MONTHS. SO NOW...I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS. IN MY SEARCH FOR INFORMATION I HAVE ENCOUNTERED MANY OWNERS OF THIS ITEM WHERE THEY BEGAN HAVING ISSUES BUT UNRELATED TO MINE.WELL..OFF NOW TO SEARCH FOR A COMPARIBLE RADIO.... BUMMED!!! 1
