Customer Reviews

!THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE IRWIN 8 INCH ergonomatic Angled Electricians Pliers! There appears to be some confusion in these reviews!!!These pliers along with all the German production in Irwins product line are Superbly made and designed pliers. They are clearly some of the best pilers I've ever owned. Sharp enough to cut hard piano wire yet Precise enough to cut small gauge Stranded wire. They bear a strong resemblance and Performance characteristics to NWS produced pliers. All pliers in this line I have Encountered so far have been of remarkable quality Hardness and Utility in workmanship! The angled Electricians pliers take a bit of getting use to but have many advantages over conventional Linesmans and needlenose pliers. The angle allows for a fatigue free grip and operation and allows a better view of the work area. Similar to a pistol grip. These are highly recommend!5Highly recommended! Industrial Electrician with Carpal Tunnel surgeryI own a pair of 8" Irwin side cutters that are the cheaper version of these and I love how those bad boys cut so the fact that I was getting the Cadillac version was exciting for me (I work as an Industrial Electrician so a new quality tool never gets old). I received them swiftly and ripped the package open and they looked even better in person. I started cutting all types of different wire I had lying around; 12 ga. stranded speaker wire, ethernet cable, coaxial cable, and even a coat hanger. They cut through all of them like butter and for someone like me with a carpal tunnel surgery under my belt at age 25 and someone who is cutting wire frequently repairing and upgrading equipment at work these high leverage side cutters are just awesome! I highly highly recommend spending the extra money for the high quality, ease of use, and carpal tunnel friendly German made tool....you will not be sorry!5GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR TOOL CABINET I haven't cut anything really heavy with these yet but one can tell that they deliver super leverage...They're supposed to be able to cut through, I believe, 3mm piano wire and I have no doubt that they're capable of doing that. Additionally, they're very comfortable to hold. Sorry I didn't have these before when I instead ended up using a cutting wheel and even a bolt cutter (No, I wouldn't try cutting a bolt with them) on stuff like a dead phone company line in back of the house (those lines are unbelievably resilient) and thin screw ends. You're likely not like me, but when something goes kaput in the house, I'm the kind of DIY'er who likes to have the appropriate tools in the house without having to run to the home center. 5BAD ASSERSY I've owned these for several months now and i say i am thoroughly impressed every thing from braided hanging wire to jack chain to #1 thats right 1 awg wire it even cuts hardened steel screws 8/32 and 10/32 no issue like a hot knife through butter. my biggest issue so far has been keeping other peoples grimy hand off them im afraid they will grow legs and walk away as is the case on most constriction sites. this is a bread and butter tool oh i forgot to mention they love MC weather it be 12/3 or 12/2 with the low voltage cuts cleanly through it and makes it easier to make the end up!!!! if you are considering buying these GET THEM LIKE TIME YESTERDAY!!!! TIME MEOW!!!!! replaced a set that walked away.....i was heart broken....but alas my firend thay arfe back and still as awesome as ever. 5Terrible Quality ControlThis company either has bad quality control or the pliers I got were used and repackaged. The locking slide is broken and missing a piece. The crimping head on the plier is broken off.And while other reviews stated the head of their's didn't close fully, mine does close fully BUT the head is not horizontally aligned.I got these on a flash sale for $17 so I'm not too bitter about it. But if I spent $35+ I'd of returned them.1German Trash. NWS seconds for pennies maybe?I am on a job site with 40 Germans. I showed them this garbage and they are ashamed at the Made In Germany stamp on them. I am guessing that Irwin picked these up as NWS seconds. There's tool marks all over them. They don't close properly. I have the same size tools from the Tiawanese factories that are perfect and they cost 20% of this. Who are you trying to fool with this trash Irwin? We are masters of our trade which is why we want ultra premium and you try to pawn your garbage off on us? Shame on you. Knipex here I come. See pics...1Best pliers out there, have tried all the major brands.Have been using these pliers for 5 days a week the last year and a half. Let a coworker borrow them the other day and he cut a live wire in a junction box finally chipping a hole in the cutters. I beat the hell out of these. They act as a hammer for staples and nails, when I didn't feel like getting out the band saw have used them to cut 300mcm cable. After working out in the rain all day last month they finally started to get a little bit of rust and didn't open super freely like when new. I worked some graphite powder into the action and they were better than new. Also, I hate having a ton of wire nuts in a box, so I always use grounding buchanans, the crimper works perfect for these. Just bought two more.5Buy all of themStrong, good feel and the lanyard system is great. To that who do not know much about the quality of hand tools like pliers and cutters. you want these qualities. for the cutters whether it be linesmen's, cutting, or the ones on needle nose, close the pliers and hold them up to a light,. good ones do not show light through the cutter. The grip part, the groves that hold what is in the pliers should interlock and be sharp so nothing can slip through or out of the grip. the handle needs to be able to fit in your hand so it does not want to slip out or twist, it also needs to be shaped so it dose not cause pain when you use it all day. You would think all of these features are common but its the opposite. I have all of the Grip Max-Leverage Pliers and all of the have what I said they should have and as a bonus the lanyard system has saved a few skulls below me when I missed my pouch. No more Oh $hiT heads up! Buy Them all I did.5Doesn't get better, as long as you can still get themThese pliers were manufactured by NWS in Germany especially for Irwin. While Knipex is the most well known German company for their very high quality pliers, NWS makes just as high quality steel and might make some of the finest cutting tools in the world. They are known for having some of the most comfortable grips in the biz, as well.I believe that Irwin and NWS have discontinued their partnership, probably because the cost of these tools were out of line with the typical Taiwanese-manufactured consumer-level tools that typify most of Irwin's lineup. You can still see the NWS influence on the grips if their newer, cheaper Vice-Grip pliers.Make no mistake, though. These German-made Vice-Grip Max pliers are absolutely pro quality. My 6" pair has the strongest cutters of anything else I have of comparable size, yet the tips are very precise. I've put them through the ringer, but the fine teeth are still as defined as when I bought them.If you want/need a high quality pair of 6" needle nose pliers, you won't do any better than these.5Great alternative to traditional diagonal cuttersThese are a really solid set of diagonal cutters--comfortable for long use, cuts pretty much anything. The weird double joint they use, while cool, doesn't allow the Jaws to open as wide as a standard pair. You won't be cutting MC/BX cables with these (which is fine if you have a pair of kleins/cable cutters in your bag). The joint also doesn't allow the pliers to fall open, even when greased and broken in. That's fine if your used to holding your pliers in a way that let's you control the opening and closing, but if you like to grip them so they fall open and are manually closed, you'll have to get used to opening them. Not being able to cut big things takes some getting used to, but otherwise they look, feel, and cut great. I would say they aren't "better" than traditional diagonal cutters, but have different strengths.5Very nice (and pricey) cutters.Just like the description says, half the effort. I compared cutting old telephone wire with these, a pair of slightly smaller Craftsman side cutters, and a pair of Diamond brand side cutters that are a hair bigger. Placed the wire as deep into the cutter jaws as I could, and they truly did cut with half the effort. To get the extra leverage requires extra handle movement, so for things like copper wire, trimming zip ties, etc, a regular pair of cutters would be more convenient. However, for bigger or harder wire, or nails up to 16 penny, these are my preferred cutters, because of the reduced effort required. The jaws line up perfectly, and they will even cut paper, which is a good sign. The cutter jaws have to be aligned very well, and have to come together pretty much exactly, in order to make a clean cut in paper. Any mis-alignment shows up as a ragged cut. My only caveat is the price. Stanley makes a similar cutter, not quite as strong, and not as precise, but at 1/3 the price. For occasional use, they should give similar cutting power at a lower cost, but if you plan to use them a lot, these seem to truly be pro quality.5*Update 3/19/19* Quality Is Lacking, but...*Review Update 3/19/2019*After reaching out to Irwin, I received a response and a free replacement for my troubles! While my initial pair didn't hold up as well as I had hoped it would, I cannot stress how amazing it has been working with Irwin. They didn't make excuses or offer alternative solutions. Rather they saw that their product was beginning to fail and they promptly stood by their 'Limited Lifetime Warranty'.My advice? If you're looking for some diagonal cutters from a company who stands behind their product 100%, look no further than Irwin! I will definitely continue doing business with this company - they've made a loyal customer out of me for life!*Original Review*I am a field technician and work with RG6 and RG11 cable daily. As such, I was looking for a tool that would enable me to cut cable more effortlessly than the original diagonal cutters I was issued by my work place. Stumbling upon these, I figured I'd give them a shot.Unfortunately, I must say I am extremely disappointed. While they started off working quite well, as you can tell from the photos the blade of the pliers have begun to dent and deform making it difficult to cut wire at times without having to readjust the blade to a better angle.I have since making this review reached out to Irwin to inquire about their 'Lifetime Warranty' on this particular product. Depending on the outcome will determine if I rate my product any higher than the 1 star it is right now.5Feels durable, quality metal Others can attest to the metallurgy quality better than I can, but in terms of use and durability this seems like a quality pair of cutters. The handles seem properly secured, not going slide off like many cheap pairs have glued over the metal handles. Metal is very strong and resistant to impact/deformation.Only feature that might be missing for some is a spring re-opener mechanism, but those wear down over time.I see this tool lasting quite a long time in my toolbox. 4
