Customer Reviews

Worked as expected, no issues I had 4 2.5 drives sitting around, thought I'd give this board a shot and hook them up. Took me a bit to see the board at boot to configure, trick is to have the HD's hooked up to it, then I saw it when PC POST'ed and was able to set up a RAID 0 no issue. I also run a RAID 0 off the motherboard on 5 SSD drives and added this 2nd RAID for fun and play. I use with Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, motherboard is M5A99X EVO R2.0. I used a PCIe 2.0 x 16 slot - no issues. The 2.5 drives are a mix/match in size and speed. The MarvelTray shows the different speeds of each 2.5 (couple at 6Gb/s, another at 3 Gb/s, etc.) and they all are working together fine. I did find there are updated drivers and installed those first. Also note I work with PC's and such in depth so understand what is involved. If my wife tried to install this, she would have went crazy I'm sure. I also used a ULTRA Quadruple Mobile Rack 2.5 to hot swap the 2.5's if needed, fill in one of those empty bays I had. Like I said, something for me to tinker around with, met my expectations and I'd recommend. 5Working 4 me as 2 x sata 2x esata Out of the box mine was set to use all 4 internal sata ports. The esata ports are coupled with the sata ports along the top of the card. Top esata with closest sata port and bottom esata port with the other sata port. There are two blocks of jumpers. Move all 4 jumpers in a block either to pins 1-2 or 2-3. Pins 1-2 activate internal sata port. Pins 2-3 activate esata port. 5Excellent speed in PCI Express 2.0 motherboard; Good speed in PCI Express 1.1 motherboard I want to use the PEX-40054 in a motherboard that has only SATA II ports (no SATA III ports) so I can get to SATA III speed without getting a new motherboard. Here is what I find, using a Transcend SSD370 512 GB drive, which is rated to have max R/W speed of 560/460 MB/s..In the ASUS P8Z77V-LX board, which has both SATA II and SATA III ports, here are the SSD's speed (without using the PEX-40054 card):- In the SATA III port, the max R/W speed is 504/457 MB/s, using CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1- In the SATA II port, the max R/W speed is 275/262 MB/sI put the PEX-40054 into a Gigabyte P45-UD3P board, which has only SATA II ports, and supports PCI Express 2.0. I put the PEX-40054 into a PCIe x16 slot and connected the SSD to one of the 4 ports.- Now, the SSD's max R/W speed is 479/458 MB/s, quite close to SATA III speeds and much faster than SATA II speeds.Next, I put the PEX-40054 into a Gigabyte P35-DS4 board, which supports PCI Express 1.1. Again, I put the PEX-40054 into a PCIe x16 slot and connected the SSD to one of the 4 ports.- Now, the SSD's max R/W speed is 378/285 MB/s, which is still slightly faster than SATA II.Conclusion:The PEX-40054 can achieve speeds faster than SATA II, and close to SATA III, in motherboards that support PCI Express 2.0.Even in motherboards that support only PCI Express 1.1, the PEX-40054 can give you faster speed than SATA II.Note that I have not used the Hyperduo capabilities of this card. I consider this a bonus but I have no plans to use it.Hope all of this is helpful. 5Web Console For Management within Windows. I purchased this card to create a raid 1 (mirror) between two new drives i had purchased. I was surprised to find out, that there is a web based console for card/raid management from within windows. I was a little worried that if a drive started going bad, i would have no way to know without a reboot. But this web console not only shows drive health, it allowed me to create the raid group. Management was a breeze. I plan to add two more drives to this card at a later date for another Raid 1 setup. Also you can download drivers from the MFG website but the ones that came on the CD were the latest. 4Inexpensive eSata controller for devices needing port-multiplers Only just received this unit today, but I'm having good luck in the first 6 hours of operation. I have two ProBox 4 slot drive units. I've been looking for a eSATA cable card that will support multiple port-multiplying units. Upon first boot, the unit enumerated all of the 8 drive attached through the two eSata ports immediately. I was even more pleasantly surprised since I'm using 6 ft long eSata cables which has been known to be problematic with some chipsets. I did not test any of the RAID functions other to start the BIOS menu and see them.In Linux, it sees the card as: 01:00.0 SATA controller: ASMedia Technology Inc. Device 0622 (rev 01)ahci 0000:01:00.0: AHCI 0001.0301 32 slots 12 ports 6 Gbps 0xff3 impl SATA modeMy particular application doesn't need super-high performance, but I did want something better than USB 2.0. Using a crude basic test,dd if=/dev/zero of=./largefile bs=1M count=40964096+0 records in4096+0 records out4294967296 bytes (4.3 GB) copied, 31.5469 s, 136 MB/s, or about 1.7 gbps not including protocol overhead. 5Had to return it. I cannot speak to other motherboards, but in this case, I was met with frustration and a lot of rebuilding time. When you first install the card, do not attach any drives (pretty straight forward).Install the software (go to the web site to get the latest drivers).I was trying to install this into a Z270 Classified EVGA motherboard. I had problems from the start. The bios recognition did/does not work. I was hoping to have something in the software/driver download recognize this card but that was to no avail.Boot up times (through the POST) was taking almost 15 mins (with drives attached and were not recognized). The application (MSU) would not launch to provide me information on the card and its operation.I had this installed into a PCI-E slot. 1I do not recommend this board for its claimed Hyper Duo functionality, but it is a decent SATA/RAID0 extender. Board works great for adding large drives to a systems that do not support drives above 2TB, like mine. I have added 8TB HDD this way.It will likely do OK for RAID setups, but one should understand that these will be "firmware-assisted" "software RAIDs", not "hardware" ones. Still better than pure "software" ones, if you ask me. I did not need or try it in any RAID roles though, I have ARECA board for that.I guess there are better or cheaper boards that are just "SATA ports extenders with LBA addressing" though. I've got this one out of interest in its "Hyper Duo" feature, and alas, it was just a big waste of time. This one is a "firmware, plus driver, plus HTTP server app" solution that is purely documented, hard to setup, and easy to break. I have made it work after 6 hours of struggle and then lost plenty of data on it by checking a wrong checkbox in its HTML-based app. I did not even see a performance boost from it while it was OK, presumably.Bottom line: I do not recommend this board for its claimed Hyper Duo functionality, but it is a decent SATA/RAID0 extender. If you need a "hybrid" SSD/HDD setup, you should better invest in either one of the "hybrid" disks (Samsung made some) or in a PrimoCache software (costs about same money as this board), which I have personally tried with a great success. 4Great card, a little more than I need even I recently upgraded to this card over the IO Crest 2 Port SATA III PCI-Express x1 Card (SY-PEX40039). I knew my SSD could run faster than what the other card was providing, and the SATA connections on the other card suck. I bought this one to resolve both issues. I haven't had it very long, so I can't speak to the connector issue (although it does employ clips), but I can say that the speed increase is phenomenal. With my OCZ Agility 3, I get over 500 MBps max read and write (see attached image). The old card gave me less than 350 MBps write and about 400 MBps read, so if you're trying to decide between a 1 or 2 lane PCI-e card then I'd definitely recommend this one (2 lane). Just make sure you have an available x4 (or higher) pci-e 2.0 slot, and make sure your SSD can run fast enough to be worth it. This card is about 3 times the price as the IO Crest (still not that expensive though).PROS:-Built in utility for creating hybrid drives (SSD + HDD). This is what they mean by "hyperduo".-Built in utility for creating RAID 0,1,1+0-Manage drives from special screen during bootup or from windows-Nice selection of ports: vertical SATA (with clips), horizontal SATA, eSATA-Worked well out of the box. Plugged it in and it worked perfectly on the first boot. (my drives were already configured as IDE instead of AHCI or RAID)CONS:-Jumper configuration is a little weird-Metal slot filler comes slightly warped (make sure to first stick the motherboard end in snug) 5Tremendous Improvement In Speed and Stable 7/31/14: I believe the external ports to this card must be enabled by moving the jumpers on the card. The instructions show this but are not clear. If you don't do this, you can't use this card to connect to an external drive. From the manual, it looks like you can enable two internal ports only, two external ports only or 1 internal port and 1 external port at the same time.Running Windows 7 64bit.My Samsung EVO 1 TB SSD was reading 100-120MB's per second on the SATA II port of Asus P5ND motherboard as reported by the Samsung "Magician" benchmark software included with the drive. Now Magician is reporting 500+ MBs read/write speeds after connecting the card to the PCI Express 2.0 slot on the motherboard. Some people complained of a delay in boot time after connecting this card. I'm not using this as a main boot drive as of yet, but the only start-up delay I see is a 1 second text referring to the SSD drive that was not there before installing this card. This seems normal as the status of all my connected drives are shown at boot time.Make sure you check the Syba website for the newest drivers.Amazing card. 5Great speed improvements on sata II controllers with SSD drives - actually getting rated SSD speeds now Added life to an older Asus P6T Sata II mobo after I realized I wasn't getting half as much out of an SSD as I should have.easy as: install card, boot windows, install drivers, shutdown, move SSD sata cable from mobo to card, turn computer on.before and after tests show a clear improvement. both taken using crystaldiskmark5.1. both using AHCI disk typeBefore:275 248158 195258 2635 72After:523 447258 268410 43826 73After speeds are very close to the drives rated 570/470 speeds and a big improvement over the mobo controller.great value for the performance improvement and very low effort in switching. 5
