Customer Reviews

Compact, but a few design flaws I purchased this for use with my new MacBook Pro. Works perfectly with it and does what it's supposed to do. However, it has a few design flaws. The first flaw is how tight the spacing is in regards to the CAC and the chip reader. Very tight fit that requires a bit of effort to insert and remove the CAC, more than should be case. Second, the folding design fold in on itself when inserting the CAC, resulting in my having to hold it open while I struggle to insert the CAC. Functionally, it works as intended. 3Great CAC reader, wish DOD's set up was easier. This device by itself is great. The small size is incredible. We are using it on 2 devices, both macs. I even use it on a extension port with the imac because the USBs are in the back. No issues getting the macs to recognize the device. The reader is about the size of a small thumb drive and sticks out a little. Just be careful not to set anything on your CAC card or the reader while using it.The set up is a whole other story but it is not the fault of the device. DOD has made the process just hard enough to elicit a few choice swear words and require you to drink before you can settle back down and get through it. Militarycac.com is the website you need you. The process seems simple; download the software to enable your devices (we used CACKEY). Import your certificates and associate them and ..... viola'!!! Not so much. Then getting to OWA is another adventure. I can tell you this, you have to try to access the website 2 - 3 times before it works but that happens even on my work computer and has nothing to do with the reader.Bottom line: If you need a CAC reader this one is a god choice and travels well. Good luck with the set up. I cannot answer any questions about set up just the device. 5Worth every penny! I have been using a more traditional style card reader for my military ID but one of my friends always bragged about their compact reader. After misplacing my old one I decided to give this one a try and I've been very happy with it since I got it! It's quite durable for its small size and it can easily be packed in anywhere without worrying about a cord. Getting it to work was a little tricky but I don't think it was for any reason to do with the card reader itself. I look forward to being able to use this on the go with my Mac (using the card reader on Windows 10 through Parallels software) and enjoying its ease of use! 5SCR3500A problems on Mac OS X I have owned two of the SCR3500 readers over the past 7 years and they have performed well. I cannot, however, get the SCR3500A to work on my Mac systems. The reader is seen on the USB bus, but no CAC card is ever detected and no LED ever lights. If you are running libcackey as your middleware and are not in a position to upgrade to the Identive drivers, be wary of the SCR3500A readers.CAC Card: Oberthur One 128 v5.5 DualTested: MacBook OS X 10.9, libcackey 0.78 - no response. MacBook OS X 10.11, libcackey 0.78 - no response. MacBook OS X 10.11, scmccid 5.0.34 - card detected, pkinit failure. Windows 8/64, ActivClient 7.0.1.14 - card detected, card works. Windows 10, ActivClient 7.0.1.14 - card detected, card works. 1One of the Best Easily one of the best and most portable Smart Card Readers I've used. I use this nearly daily and it's done well on a wide variety of environments. The best part is both under Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 it doesn't need any type of driver to install. It's automatically registered by the OS. This specifically come in handy when using on DoD machines, as you won't have any type of permissions to install drivers.I can't recommend this card reader enough! Buy it, you won't be disappointed. 5... users that need to be able to use their smart card in different places but do not have access ... I work for a government contractor and we often have users that need to be able to use their smart card in different places but do not have access to a machine with a smart card reader. This solves the problem in spades, it's small enough and sturdy enough to go on a keychain or just to be stowed in a laptop bag, backpack, purse etc. Also, in my experience this just works, on any machine I have that has Windows 7 or above I haven't had to install drivers, it's just plug and play. The other strong point is that that the reader is reliable as well, once it's up, it handles all flavor of smart card. 5Awesome CAC reader. I have bought two of these now and I am super happy with the product. It's pretty small as you can see from the pictures and is essentially plug and play with Windows 10 or later. Anything before that I don't know because I don't have previous versions. It has a little strap to put on your keychain for on the go CAC carding I suppose, but I essentially use it home. I have used it with my MacBook as well with no problem. The only issues I ever have are typically browser related, which are easy enough to fix.I recommend this to anyone needing one. It's compact unlike many on be market. 5Worked great for 6 months then melted and fried my CAC chip As a portable reader for a CAC card, this worked great... for the first six months. I used it no more than once a week to access my work network remotely. I had zero issues until one morning, I kept getting a "can't read certificates" error. I noticed that the device (the reader) was getting warm, so I unplugged it and let it cool down while I rebooted my computer. After about an hour, I tried again- this is when my home began to smell like melting plastic-- like something electronic was burning. By the time I realized it was the CAC reader and unplugged it, it had already melted to the point that I am no longer able to close the device (the sides that fold up when not in use). In addition to this, it also damaged my CAC ID and scorched the metal chip. I had to go to a facility to get a new card, as well as a new card reader.I bought the device because I loved how small the design was, making it easily portable when in meetings or working remotely. If the device had just died, I would have left 3 stars because its relatively inexpensive and it did last for approximately 6 months... but since it damaged my ID card forcing me to replace it-- one star is about as much as I can justify. The inconvenience this device caused me was more than just a broken device/waste of money... It cost me productivity from work, and therefore I don't think that it's worth purchasing/taking the risk again. 1Size of a small thumb drive folded. Smaller than I expected & works perfectly. The hinge is very robust and contacts appear solid so this item will likely work for a long time. Worked without any drivers on Windows 10. The provided key chain attachment is straight-forward albeit a very simple 2-loop arrangement with a screw connector, so very secure for attached applications. The folding parts don't really lock closed, but the hinge is stiff enough it likely won't unfold unless carrying outside of a pocket attached to a bouncing key chain. The contacts are exposed, so carrying in a pocket may muck up the electrical contact - recommend treating like any other non-water/dust-proof electronics to maintain longevity. 5Works for Macs on military websites Works fine now. But the first one I got was defective. Didn't figure it out until after I spent hours/ days trouble shooting and then got in touch with customer service. I use it for my Mac on military websites. 4
