Customer Reviews

One StarI would not recommend these for plastic model kits. They are far too abrasive.1Great FilesI use the set of HTS-101l0 Diamond flat files for jewelry making purposes. I am new to basic metal work and these files suit me just fine. great for finishing ear wires and clasps.5Good assortment of grits that effective remove material, but not the highest quality (understandable, given the price)These aren't high-quality precision tools, but for the price you wouldn't expect them to be. What they are is a cheap set of diamond files at a variety of grits to take you from start to finish.I bought these to work on an aluminum MacBook Pro which had a big dent/scrape on one of the corners, and which resulted in the scraped aluminum folding over on itself. I was able to easily file off the folded aluminum with the coarser grits and use the finer grits to smoothe everything out and put a fairly mild polish on the filed surface. Of coarse you can tell it has been worked on, as Macbooks are anodized aluminum and the filed area is simply polished aluminum, but it looks much, much better than it used to.I can't speak to longevity as this was a minor job, but I wouldn't be surprised if these tools don't last that long. I mean, at $9 for six files, you can't expect too much. So, why not five stars? Well, one problem that is apparent even to a neophyte like me is that the grits on the files varies from place to place. This is especially an issue on the fine files, as you want to be finishing/polishing with them. Unfortunately, only the tips and edges of the fine files I received were really fine, with lower sections being noticeably coarser4An essential tool!I used to buy standard needle files quite often, but I have for some years now been a fan of diamond files. I like to have them in different shapes, and now this set gives me flat files in different grits. In conjunction with diamond files, I like to use tungsten carbide rotary tools, but they are fairly costly. So I tried out diamond rotary cutters, which are fairly inexpensive. They do work similar to tungsten carbide, and they last fairly well if you don't overheat them. When shaping metal pieces, smoothing weld joints, or de-burring tools, these small files do not take down thick metal very quickly, but they have a definite value as a follow-up to a bench grinder or other cutters, where the surface needs to be smoothed and perhaps delicately cut. I have also used them very successfully to shave and smooth glass. I even used a diamond file purchased some years ago to cut down a circle of thick glass that was slightly too large for a recess that it needed to fit. That took about 2.5 hours and wore down the diamond file noticeably before I was done, but glass is hard, and the file did the job. That experience moved me to buy similar files, such as these, as a replacement and tool set enhancement. These multiple grades shape and smooth surfaces quite handily. One very useful role for this set in particular is the shaping of blades. When a knife is used heavily or abused, the edge can need basic reshaping to bring its sides together before careful sharpening, and these files are much like using different grades of sharpening stone. A nice difference from using coarse stones is that these files are very compact, it is easy to use them dry, and the different grades in this set can bring the blade edge down to where it is ready to hone on a fine stone. If a knife or other blade, such as an axe, is in terrible shape, it becomes almost an edge creating process. Skillful use of a bench grinder may give the best start to big job, then use of a very coarse stone (I rather like the way a tile edging stone stands up to steel), and then this series of files fits well to bring things into line before fine honing to a shaving edge.Diamond files (and sharpening stones) do wear out; maybe the diamonds themselves remain fairly sound -- I'm not positive, but with much use one eventually sees the metal that sits behind the diamond matrix. However, the price is right, these tools last quite well, and unlike some metal files I have not seen the cutting power deteriorate in minutes. (Of course, some metal files are better made than others.) Anyway, I have come to rely a lot on these diamond files and related tools. They do a good job for a good price. I'm hooked.5Perfect set of grit selection.Been looking for a 40 grit diamond file, that wasn't really expensive, for a long time. This kit not only has the 40 grit (for really fast metal removal - for shaping operations), but also perfect gradation of grit to the very fine 600 grit file. Using this spectrum of grit grades, I've been able to roughly shape hardened knife blades and leatherman tools, then -going through the entire grit range of files- end with a polished (ending with the 600 grit file) finish; which can be made mirror polished by using wet-n-dry 800 and 1500 grit sand paper.5Continuing good performanceI am using these files to shape and smooth smalti (glass) mosaic tile. After considerable use they show no wear and continue to perform the same as when they were new. They perform exactly as I hoped they would.5
