Customer Reviews

It Didn't Work When It Mattered I purchased this so that I would no longer be surprised by a backed-up floor drain in my basement. Once in a while, it would back up after using a moderate amount of water, rather randomly though. I tested this unit and it seemed to be exactly what I needed so I would not be surprised by a backup and I would be able to take action if it happened. A few days after putting it down, I was watching TV and I thought that I heard a single Beep. I listened but heard nothing else. I thought perhaps a smoke detector battery was getting low, but as I heard nothing else, I paid no attention. About an hour later I flipped on the basement light and was staring at an inch of water covering the floor, and there in the middle was the silent Honeywell RWD21 Water Leak Alarm. After clean-up, I did a bit of testing with the unit. If it TOUCHES water, you get the alarm. If any more than a surface trace of water is present, it will not work. Basically this renders it pretty useless for most applications where water may exceed 1/4 of an inch at a moderate pace. I could have clearly heard if there were more, but I had gotten only ONE warning beep. I have since purchsed two very inexpensive units from China and have tested them. They emit an ear-splitting alarm when wet all the way through submersion. There are better items to spend your money on if you need a reliable water detection. 1An Inexpensive Insurance Policy. It was 3am and our water softener was recycling. Suddenly, we were awakened by an alarm in our basement. Our Honeywell water leak alarm gave us warning that our sewer had begun to back-up into our laundry room. The alarm allowed us time to shut down the softener and wet-vac up the water before it reached our carpet and other valuable items. As fate would have it, the water softener in our furnace room began to leak the very next night. We were again awakened by our 2nd Honeywell alarm strategically placed on the floor. As with any insurance policy, you don't need it until something goes wrong. When it does, these little alarms can save you from major expense. Our story convinced the plumbers who unclogged our sewer line and replaced our water softener to buy these alarms for their own homes. 5Saved my butt! After having my furnace ducts cleaned the cleaner (who is a professional HVAC guy) highly recommended that I purchase one of these and stick it on a flat surface below the humidifier, which was directly above the front of the furnace. His reasoning was that the humidifiers can leak, and the water could destroy the very expensive electronic gas value directly below it.So I purchased on and installed it. Not even 3 days later my wife and I are woken up at 3AM by a very loud beeping. I ran down to the basement and guess what, the filler hose on the water valve for the humidifier had worked it's way off and water was spraying all over the place.Luckily for me we caught it in time and were able to clean up the mess without any damage to the furnace or it's expensive components. This little alarm saved us hundreds, if not thousands and was worth every penny. 5Stays in Place I have this, and I also have the First Alert Water Alarm. I like this better because it sits low to ground and is hard to tip over. I routinely find the First Alert alarm tipped over because something bumped into it. Both alarms work the same and respond to the slightest amount of water. The Honeywell alarm sounds three beeps (about one a second) followed by about three seconds of quiet and then more beeps until it is removed from the water. I can hear this from about one floor away, but it is not loud enough to wake you up if it is in the basement and you are on a second floor. The First Alert alarm is a constant screech but it is not significantly louder. I am using this by our sump pump, and I have another alarm by our water heater. It is about 1.25 inches high and 3.25 inches in diameter. I paid about eight fifty for this. It requires a 9v battery that is not included. 5Does *not* do its job! This thing saved us from a huge disaster. We had put one of these in the basement by our laundry tub in case there was an issue with the washer, unknowingly placing it under a window that had a leak. During a heavy rain we hard an alarm coming from the basement and when we went down to investigate we saw water pouring in through the window. Had this not been in place, we would not have noticed the leaky window until the following day when it would have been too late to catch the leak.***Update*** I changed my rating to 1 star because the alarm we had placed under the kitchen sink failed to go off. We didnt know our kitchen faucet was leaking until we saw the water flowing into our basement from the floorboards. The water was certainly high enough for the alarm to go off, cause this thing was soaked. Maybe the battery died? I would have thought there would be some sort of low battery alert before it dies, but maybe not? 15 Star Product, 1 Star Packaging The product is great, just what you would expect from Honeywell. Small, simple, and with a low battery warning like a smoke detector. Eventually we should probably all upgrade to detectors that alert us on our smartphones, but I plan to wait on that till the bugs are all worked out, and these are cheaper also. I bought 5 and all test out ok, so I hope they work properly if there is a leak. The alarm isn't super loud but is fine for me. Having it in the cabinet under the kitchen sink, with the cabinet doors closed, I can hear it all the way up in the bedroom on the second floor, with the bedroom door also closed. If you are playing a stereo or watching TV it would of course be harder to hear. The packaging is 1 star in my view because of the overly thick plastic you have to cut through to get at the product, and then the 5 minutes or so of time you will spend if you want to get all the double stick tape goo off the bottom of the unit. Have your Goo Gone ready! This is not a big deal of course, and doesn't affect my rating. Some people wrote it wobbles on the base. That only happens if you don't screw the base in all the way. It is easy to screw in all the way if you use a quarter in the slot to turn the base cover. I wonder if this was the issue for some other reviewers that stated it didn't go off at all or the alarm was delayed, since not screwing the base in all the way moves the electrodes up off the floor. This could be a significant distance off the floor if the unit also rocks on the base such that the electrodes are even higher. But there is no issue here if you screw the base in properly. One final note is I agree the wires for the battery attachment are a bit short, but if you are careful there shouldn't be an issue. 5Must-have for basements Hard to truly rate something that I haven't needed yet (knock on wood) but 5 stars for peace of mind. It's like a smoke detector you put on the ground, it has two metal contacts on the bottom and when water touches them it completes the circuit and sets off an audible alarm. I tested it before putting it down in the basement and it does what it is supposed to do when it contacts liquid. Like a smoke alarm, it also starts chirping when it needs new batteries. I put this down in the basement sump pump area due to a close call a few months ago. So far no chirps, it's still on duty. 5It just went off last night so it's good to know it works when it's supposed to I bought this about 3 and a half years ago to put under my kitchen sink. I had forgotten all about it. It just went off last night so it's good to know it works when it's supposed to. Found about 1/2 inch puddle on plywood base. Apparently there's a slight dip where the water pools and the alarm was not quite in the center of the dip. Slow drip. Fixed. Dried the area. Tested alarm. Still works great. Put it back under sink confident it will work again. Happy with product. As someone mentioned, there are two metal sensors on bottom of unit. To test is easy enough. Touch sensors with a wet paper towel. It will sound but will immediately stop alarming when wet towel is removed. Love the fact that unit is reusable. 5NOT LOUD AT ALL!!!!! DO NOT BUY! I received this product today. I put a brand new Duracell battery in it. I tested it. It is NOT loud at ALL! You probably wouldn't hear it in the next room, much less any other distance. I have other water alarms that are MUCH louder. A complete waste of money. This piece of junk is being sent back immediately. 1Saved us some serious water damage! Bought a 3-pack of these after a rather ugly sewer backup in my utility room, and put them around the lowest parts of the floor a few months ago. A couple of weeks ago, my husband "heard something beeping" in the basement while I was at work, and went down to find that a fitting on the filter we have on the incoming water supply had rusted through and broken, and water was pouring onto the utility room floor like it was coming out of a fire hose. He shut off the main valve before the water had time to spread beyond the concrete floor in the utility area into the carpet. If not for the water alarm, it would most likely have flooded a good part of the basement before he noticed it. Saved our butts! 5
