Customer Reviews

Humidity Feels Great...In the winter. Let's start with my application. The house is about 120 years old but insulated. Lots of woodwork. Forced air furnace and located in Southern Wisconsin, so very dry in the winter time. Prior to buying this the humidity in the house was about 25% in early January when it was at it's coldest.I read all the reviews on this unit and managed to install it in about 2 hours with no significant problems. I installed it on the supply feed for the furnace, directly upstream of the burners. As others have said - cut carefully, there is not a lot of room for error. I did not buy the accessory kit either. I fed it by cutting into a 1/4" water line that was feeding my ice maker and installing a compression T fitting which worked out splendid. I do not trust saddle valves, so I didn't go that route. For the 120V required for the unit, I tapped two spade terminals on the circuit board of my furnace called "HEAT AUX". I had done some research and found these were intended to proved 120V to a humidifier. I wired those to a surface mounted single gang outlet that I installed on the furnace and plugged it in. I drained directly into the condensate tank at the base of the furnace.I installed the humidistat on the return duct as directed by the manufacturer. I have been running the unit for a little over a month and here's what I can report. Overall, I am very happy with the unit. The humidity in the house feels great. I measure the humidity with an electronic wall mounted unit upstairs and it has been as high as 50% as I have been fine tuning the unit. My goal is for the humidity to be at about 40% which seems to be a nice balance enough to feel good, but not so much as to condense on the windows. My one complaint, and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5, is that the humidistat is VERY sensitive. Slight movements to the dial produce big jumps in humidity. It has taken me about a month to get it completely dialed in. This is also complicated by the fact that we let the heat go down to 55 at night and back up to 68 when we are home. Ideally I would find a digital unit combined with thermostat upstairs that would read the room humidity and adjust accordingly.Overall I am very satisfied with this unit and would buy it again. It's worth reading all the reviews here on Amazon to get all the information though. 4Bad experience The template for cutting the hole in the furnace is WAY too big. Do not use it. The instructions are for a different model: There are extra unused wires (the red ones) not documented in the instructions, the yellow wires need to make contact for it to turn on. If you get a bad water valve (like we did-twice!) it shorts out the whole unit--there are units with black valves that work fine, the ones Amazon has are bronze-color and defective. Honeywell's customer support is non-existant. They never returned my call and took over two weeks for a poor, textbook response to my online form. Because this unit supplies its own power and includes a humidistat, you don't need to (and CANNOT) connect it to an external 24v power source or the furnace's power, however you still need a means of switching it on and off so it only runs when the furnace fan is on. You need a furnace with a switched 120v outlet or a switch such as the sail switch in the sold-separately installation kit (some come with an air-pressure differential switch) so that the unit doesn't turn on without the furnace's fan being on. If you have a furnace or thermostat with humidifier support, don't buy this unit-get the aprilaire-it has non-powered connections for that. I had a much better experience with the the more expensive aprilaire unit and a smart thermostat with humidifier support. After many exchanges and purchasing the installation kit, the unit is finally working. Hard to appreciate the otherwise good unit after the painful installation process. 2Easy install. Fair results The install requires a low to moderate amount of ability, but it's the easiest choice. One hole on the heated side of the furnace ducting. One water connection with the same copper tubing as your swamp cooler.I bought the install kit that includes a Sail Switch (which is easier than direct wire). Buy the kit. The sail switch requires a small hole in the return air duct. Simple low voltage wiring from the switch to the unit. The main unit plugs in to a common house plug. You need a drain or condensation pump. I drain mine into the condensation pump that the furnace already had. Easy.Performance: Not stellar. Adequate. Humidity gets as low as 15% in my house on a cold day. This unit keeps it about 30% tops. Don't expect miracles, but it sure helps. If I had space on the ducts, I would install another.Maintenance: Simple. Easy. Change the pad in 5 minutes. Clean it once a year. My first one (some 5-6 years into service) blew the circuit board, I replaced the inside tray and the solenoid at different times. All easy parts to find online, or do as I did...just buy a new one and use the parts from the old. It's a good unit that I would buy again. 4Honeywell does NOT stand by their warrantee! Installed the unit (no installation kit needed, everything required WAS in the box) and it worked fine for about 10 days. Then, the water supply solenoid stated cycling on/off every 2-3 seconds, starving the unit of water. Traced the problem to a bad pressure switch (a separate part that is included in the kit). Called Honeywell to try and replace just this part under warrantee. They said the part was discontinued and would not replace it, insisted I go back to Amazon to replace THE WHOLE KIT! Totally crazy, and now I find the kit is no longer available (ordered it here just 14 days ago), so basically, I'm screwed. Not at all pleased with Honeywell, or sudden the lack of availability on Amazon. 2Take your time to install it right and it will work great! I too like the 'do it yourself' method if it saves a bundle. After some research about the different types of whole house humidifiers I decided to try this one. It looked like the least complicated to install and most maintenance free.If you aren't familiar with electrical diagrams the instructions will appear very inadequate. However, since this is a commonly purchased product, you will find plenty of help already available online for connecting this to your furnace. Simply Google HE360A humidifier install. The basic concept: If you have a 120vac 'HUM' connection or similar you can power it from your furnace directly, if not, then it needs its own power outlet. I spent one afternoon researching and planning the install, and the next actually doing the install with my father (not a professional). It went in easily (cutting into the furnace took some sweat), looks clean, and doesn't add any significant noise. I have a two story, drafty, 50yr old, 2100 sq ft home, plus full basement. The humidifier started at 9PM, single digits outside and 20% humidity inside. The next morning it was at 33% humidity! Two days later my nose is thanking me when I wake up! 5Big improvement on my previous furnace humidifier This unit is an industrial-strength humidifier. My old one, also a Honeywell model, moved the humidified air right back into the furnace, where it was simply dried out all over again. This unit forces the air back into the output duct. Despite what the ads say, you don't need to order a humidistat. It comes with a saddle tap and humidistat. You will need some 1/4" tubing (copper is best) and necessary fittings. I would also suggest ordering a sail switch (Honeywell S688 Sail Switch) and save yourself from having to mess around with the furnace wiring. I am using an outlet near the furnace to power it, and it is controlled in series by the humidistat and sail switch. No need to figure out out to get switched 110VAC to the unit. The installation instructions are pathetic, though -- especially the wiring instructions. Otherwise I would have rated the product with 5 stars. 4Easy Installation and Fast Results I should have purchased and installed this a few years ago.... Installation is really easy and takes about 2-3 hours. The hardest part is cutting the hole in the duct work, which I did with snips. My only concern when I was buying was how long it protrudes into the duct work, because I was installing it very close to the AC coils. But it only sticks out about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch into the duct. The difference is noticeable within a few hours (when furnace is running). Before installation humidity in my house was about 20-30% (during Chicago winter). Post installation (within a day) it raised the humidity to about 50-60% (my house is split level about 1400 sq. ft. total space). There is a controller that lets you adjust humidity to your preference. So far it has been running for 2 months with no problems. Furnace is much louder than the HE360A so no noticeable noise increase.I highly recommend it for dry climates. 5great value I live in the North where the heat being on all wither can just dry you out. With the installation of this that I had done professionally, we have a much better humidity ratio in the house. I no longer wake up with a bloody nose or dry eyes. My furniture is also happier!! It cost me less thatn $350 with the installation as opposed to my neighbor who had a humidifier installed in his home for $1000. It could be installed by a DIYer if they are moderate to professionally good at these things. I was scared to try and got a decent price from the plumber to do it so saved myself some time, effort and cursing. 5Nice humidifier Excellent humidifier but all the instructions were for units mounted on metal duct. My duct, like a lot of home heating systems, is fiberglass. I even went online but still couldn't find an installation guide that was for my duct type. I did get it installed by adding support strips inside the duct to secure the humidifier unit to.Other than this, the unit works great. The rest of the installation went great, also. 5Adds a good amount of humidity The installation instructions as far as how to wire it up are terrible. The physical installation instructions and difficulty aren't bad. The build quality is decent but not great. But it was 2/3rds the price of the comparable AprilAire and seems to work fine, adding a comfortable amount of humidity when the furnace kicks on. I used a relay connected to the hum terminal on my furnace control board to control this. The HE360A just expects you to compete the circuit between the two control wires that come out of it, in series with the included humidistat. You should not introduce any voltage whether DC or AC on those 2 control wires, unlike some other humidifiers expect for control. 4
