Customer Reviews

That's good if you're cutting large holes This tool works well, but beware of a few things. The instructions mistakenly say that the hole size is measured from the inside of the cutting bit holders. That's not true - you need to read the hole size from the outside of the holders, not the inside. The ruler marks are accurate as long as you align them with the outside edges. The catch basin is also relatively large. That's good if you're cutting large holes, but if you're cutting smaller holes you won't be able to cut them very close to other obstructions because the catch basin will get in the way. There is a rubber seal on the catch basin that appears to be non-marking, but I needed to touch up my ceiling from the marks the catch basin made due to the force required to plunge the drill. Make sure that the drill reaches full speed before plunging or the bits will catch. Plunge slowly and at high speed to avoid catching the bits. 4Can do, do overs. I can't say enough about this hole saw my first time to try it out was on a plaster ceiling the first hole I drilled for recess lights I had made the setting 1/16 of an inch to small for the can this could be a nightmare with the abrasion saw you find at home depot no do over the saw would dance across the room I was sick I'm working with a finish ceiling the home owner would have went crazy not only that I would had to shell out at least a hundred or more to have it repaired. I reset the pro x-230 to the size needed pushed up hard on the dust catcher started the saw fast speed pushed up the saw easy, in two seconds the hole was big enough it paid for it's self right there. If you have a lot of holes to drill it's worth every cent. If you have only one hole to drill it cost to much for you to own, get the abrasion at home depot it won't cut anywhere near as fast but your time is not money. The ceiling I was cutting is one inch thick it cut it in less then fifteen seconds. I have over fifty holes to drill with no clean up. 5Worth the investment, even for small project!!!! This tool was definitely the MVP for my recessed lighting install. About a week after I had brand new carpeting installed, I decided to do recessed lighting in my 70yr old PLASTER ceiling (this stuff is like drilling through cement compared to sheetrock). After looking at the overpriced low quality crap for cutting light holes they sell at big box stores, vs my original plan of using a sawzall and making a huge mess, I found this thing. I had to cut about 8 holes in plaster ceiling to mount 6" lighting cans. After the first hole I had this overwhelming sigh of relief and disbelief that there is no way it could be this EASY and CLEAN. Don't even waste money on the vacuum adapter, the bowl catches all the mess and you just dump it into a garbage can/bag. This thing cut 6" holes for recessed lighting cans through 3/4" of plaster in under 20 seconds per hole. It was amazing. Now I am glad I have the tool, I will probably put recessed lights in other rooms now without hesitation. Also includes a really nice blow molded carry case that holds everything. Just make sure you have a cordless drill with a 1/2" chuck, and one that has a selectable transmissions, and you want to run this at low speed (I used a 36V dewalt in first gear approx. 500rpm and it cut FAST, approx. 20sec/hole) 5The hole saw worked better than I could have imagined The hole saw worked better than I could have imagined. My electrician couldn't believe how well it worked, and he's been doing this kind of work for twenty years. I did six 5+ inch holes in a plaster ceiling in fifteen minutes. I had to redo two holes because we measured incorrectly for the ceiling joists. I was able to move one hole 2" and another one 4" without a problem - and that's impressive. It's well worth the money as a labor saver - minimal cleanup, precision results, and recessed lights that are solidly mounted! One added benefit - everyone is happy that this part of the job went so well 5Awesome! I bought this to install 10 recessed lights in my home. My ceiling is 3/4" sheetrock with a thin, fine plaster finish, and I didn't want to waste time or money on cheap alternatives from HD or Lowes. Although not inexpensive, this is worth every penny, and then some. It melted through my ceilings with no problem whatsoever, and with very little effort, made no mess at all.I don't expect to install any more recessed lights, so I was going to sell it on eBay when I was done. But I love it so much, I'm going to keep it just in case a project comes up in the future, or if a friends needs to borrow it.Even if it just sits in my garage and never gets used again, I don't regret paying this much, and you won't either! 5Great DUAL cutting bits make this saw a dream to use. Pretty extensive for a hole, but the saw its adjustable. The DUAL cutting bits made of carbide made fast work in plaster and lath. The pan catches all the debris instead of letting it fly all over the room - plaster can be very messy to cut. Also, the DUAL cutting bits keep the saw balanced. Other saws had only one bit. I'll bet those are a bugger to handle cutting a 7" hole. 5I purchased this for a 46 speaker ceiling speaker installation ... I purchased this for a 46 speaker ceiling speaker installation job. The hole saw was used to cut the mounting holes in suspended drop ceiling panels, the high speed steel blades cut a very clean hole. I did need to remove the tension spring for cutting into the drop ceiling, the force needed to compress the spring would lift the ceiling panel out of place. With removing the spring I needed to hold the plastic bowl with one hand up against theceiling panel while cutting. The bowl did catch a lot of the dirt but there was still somedust puffing out around edges of the bowl where it was up against the ceiling. After checking above the ceiling to make sure your not going to cut into anything close the open panel back up before cutting, that will save some dirt from coming through the open panel. There s no need to remove the panel you want to cut, for access to the ceiling I opened a panel next to the one I was cutting to mount the speaker in. One set of blades lasted for all 46 cut outs. 4Very useful tool - carry case needs a bit of tweaking Great tool that cut perfect, clean 8.25" (in my initial use) circles in a plastered drywall ceiling and kept the mess to a minimum. The only improvement I could suggest would be the ability to store the tool with the cutting blades in any position. They have to be adjusted back inboard for the case lid to close, meaning extra time resetting blade position between storage and use. Spare blades rattle around in the case also - a small compartment with a lid would help with this. If you're installing lots of in-ceiling speakers, this is the tool to use. 5Best Tool For Cutting Holes For Recessed Lights, Minor Flaws Easy To Fix. I use this tool to cut recessed light and ceiling fan holes in the ceiling. The tool is exceptional in catching and holding the dust which would otherwise damage your lungs and make a huge mess. For that reason I have purchased and installed vacuum adapter (~ $25 from the same company) which can easily be installed after you drill a hole in the clear plastic shield (dust collector). My Fein HEPA vacuum sucks the sheet-rock dust during the drilling, making it easier to see the drilling through the clear plastic shield. For good results, use a low speed, high torque drill - you won't be disappointed - but it works OK with a cordless drill (although it tends to jam and sometimes damage the hole). To improve the operation and results of this unit, I have made some improvements:(1) I drilled 20 ~ 30, 1/16" holes in the clear shield (Upper Wall, All The Way Around) in order to reduce the vacuum created inside the shield until ceiling hole is cut and air gets in). This reduces jamming of the cutters into the sheet rock because the cutters get sucked - due to vacuum build up - in and pressed against the ceiling. These tiny holes I drilled in the clear shield replenish the air and dust which are much more easily sucked inside the vacuum.(2) I disassembled the unit, took out the marked bar - on which the cutters glide and fasten - grinded the tiny metal stoppers in order to take the cutters out and use Milwaukee Recessed Light Shallow Hole Saws. This saves tons of time and frustration every time the cutters have to be readjusted/set. Now I only swap the hole saws, no wasted time and frustration repositioning and tightening the cutters on the holding bar. Note: Only shallow, recessed light hole saws (I use Milwaukee) fit in.(3) The shaft gets jammed inside the plastic shield ball bearing, very annoying trying to work like that. I used drum grease to make it more responsive (help the shaft move smoothly up and down inside the ball bearing), therefore giving me better control over the whole cutting process. Next time I will lubricate the shaft/inside ball bearing with Teflon Spray or Graphite Spray. I love this tool, it is very reliable, clean and productive. 4BEWARE!!!!! RUINED THREE OAK TONGUE AND GROOVE BOARDS!!!!! BEWARE!!!!! The graduation marks on the blade holder are COMPLETELY INACCURATE. We carefully set the blades to 6.25" and it made a 7.25" hole. We wish we could return this piece of rubbish since it cost us three solid oak tongue and groove boards. It almost flew out a window after we realized it was seriously flawed and set us back a day of replacing and staining new expensive boards. We ordered this tool early on in our huge project and did not have a chance to use it, leading to the discovery of the serious design flaw, until the return period had closed. What a complete waste of $140+ product cost plus over $60 in ruined material. DO NOT BUY!!!!! 1
