Customer Reviews

Decent pH/Conductivity/Temperature MeterThis meter has worked reasonably well in an aquarium system, maintaining a pretty good calibration over time. If you buy spare pH probes, make sure that you check them for getting dried out over time, since they can be damaged if they run out of electrode storage solution. As far as other users have made comments about electrical interference from nearby devices, I've found that making an additional ground lead, connected to the casing of the connector for the pH probe and running that directly into the aquatic environment being measured eliminated problems with getting stable reliable measurements even with pumps and other noisy electronic devices around. After having two of these for a couple years, the temperature probe has gone out on one, which is unfortunately permanently attached to this unit and isn't replaceable. I'm not sure what caused it to fail, but it would be nice if this were replaceable.4Didnt work for meI got this unit and tried for days to get it to work, so I called the company Hanna and they told me you are not supose to put the probes in past the top, it doesnt say nothing about this in the directions, then the other thing is this unit won't work around a electronic ballast. Hanna should do there home work and let people know this stuff.Hanna Gro'Chek Continuous pH/TDS/EC/Temp1HI991404 Ok TDS/Ec meter but Not Good for pH!!!Had this unit for a few months now, and have been a more than a little disappointed with it.First the good:1. Back lit screen makes it easy to read in dark locations.2. The EC/TDS meter works well and is easy to calibrate.3. The temperature meter (built in to the EC/TDS probe) is also accurate on my unit.4.The unit has mounting screws5. The probes have threads for inserting into a closed system6. Great email response from the service teamOk Now the bad!1. The pH probe has a non-standard plug, so you can only use this probe type. Other units use a standard BNC connector and your probe choice can be based on durability, maintenance and accuracy requirements.2. When calibrating, you need to place both probes (pH and EC) into the calibrating solution - this means more calibration solution is wasted rinsing and submerging probes. - You will want a good 100mls of solution each time you calibrate.3. The pH probe seems very delicate with a very poor shelf/operating life - I have tried 2 new pH probes and neither work properly. The probe it came with was dry (in the plastic bulb protector) on arrival and it had a metering range of 7.2 to 7.0. I replaced this probe for a second one (~$75) which fortunately arrived wet. This new probe reads a 4.01 solution as pH5.4 - an improvement on the first but still useless.4. Performing two point calibration at 7.0 and 4.0 is impossible, as this unit has automatic calibration. I was told by Hanna that if the probe is not reading your 4.0 solution within a few points of 4.0, it will not set!!Unfortunately neither of my 2 probes come close to reading a 4.01 solution anywhere near this. Hanna's opinion on this is that if the probe wont do this, it is broken!!On other pH meters you can set the 2nd set point (ie pH 4 or 10) by turning a screw or dial somewhere on the unit. Not so on these units.5. The unit is very sensitive to current changes on the power board. If you have multiple devices that are being switched on and off on the same power board, your HI991404 meter unit will turn off as soon as one of the other devices switches on. Unfortunately, the Hanna meter does not turn itself back on again. I have tried changing the power transformer from 12v 0.5amp to a 12v 1.5 amp regulated (important) and EMI filtered, transformer. This solves the problem, but you will need to re calibrate the meter as the readings (esp. EC) will be slightly different. This suggests to me that there is no power regulation with this unit, and it is supplied with a very cheap transformer.6. The EC/TDS/Temp probe is hardwired to the unit. If these fail, the unit has to go in the bin. Fortunately this EC/Temp probe is robust and the unit will probably fail first. Which brings me to the final issueThis last point is just nit picking but the unit looks good in the picture but feels light and plasticy when you have it in hand. when mine arrived, all of the screws were loose, and there is an abundance of vacant realestate inside the unit. Im sure with a little thought, they could have easily halved the size. These criticisms are based on my experiences with a Milwaukee SMS122 and another "no brand" continuous pH monitor, and a Hanna handheld pH meter. The 2 Hanna meters have both been junk.Recommendations:1. Look for a meter that has replaceable, BNC connector, probes.2. Consider getting a meter that is compatible with Gel filled pH probes3. Avoid automatic calibrating units.4. Cheap no name brands can be more reliable than expensive brands2Very accurate product, but a poor choice for gardeners with a lot of electricity in areaThis pH meter is very accurate and not too hard to use, but it will not work at all if there are electrical appliances running near by. I power off HPS lights and fans before using this meter. It may be great in a greenhouse with few power appliances around, but inside its a nuisance.3Very undependableI Ordered this item based on reviews of hanna products and thought this should most definatly suit me for my purposes. Upon arrival all packaging was in good condition with no damage. I set my meter up to the best of my ability however the ph meter would not calibrate. I used the device regardless and hoped that maybe it was an error on my part. After about a week of use the monitor stopped being continuos and started not being anything. Its just hanging on the wall , it shuts off immediatly after being turned on and does nothing but glow a green led light. This is a peice..if I ever saw one this is it. I contacted the Hanna tech dept. They asked a few questions and havent responded since. Overall I believe they hype their own products. This was a poor decision on my part..dont make the same mistake.1Thought it would workI purchased 2 of the Hanna combo grochek meters last year which are supposed to have a 2 year warranty, but the first one already is off and wont re-calibrate. Not too mention, I always new I was going to have problems with purchasing expensive items over the internet. Amazon has no clear customer service department to help me figure out what to do about it. SO BEWARE1NOT Worth $1 let alone $145 or so!!!Got the first one, and it would not calibrate at all ever. Sent it back and got the replacement after the seller gave me some "Not so nice" customer service. The replacement calibrated but is NOT ACCURATE at all! Don't waste your money on this one! Hard to find good affordable ones out there! The best ones are high cost, maybe worth it, we'll see???1LAMP BALLASTSI bought 5 of these meters 6 months ago. Nothing but trouble from the start I've replaced all the PH electrodes @ $80-$100 each and they last at best 2 months. I sent 1 back on their request to install a capacitor to buffer the ballast RF. It worked for awhile.Having said that I have to say that I was shocked by how they care about customer satisfaction for real. I was contacted by Rob within hours of my complaint to them. Long story short, They made things right and then some. I give 5 stars for customer service. As to the meter, it's just not made for what we use it for. The boss told me they are going to add a ballast warning prominently on this listing.Hanna makes a monitor that will work and is easier to us.I've used Hanna products for years with no problems and don't expect any now that I have the correct meters. JUST DON'T BUY THIS MODEL IF YOU HAVE BALLASTS AROUND5
