    Just What Nigel OrderedVarious boat maintenance and radio installation books (like Nigel Calder's Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems) recommend sintered bronze "foot" plates for boat lightening protection and HF radio grounding. They worked like a charm on our boat (see [...]) for a pacific crossing. We'd pull into many ports where neighboring boats were attempting to repair and replace their electronics (or worse) after a lightening strike, but we were never struck directly, so the lightening protection intent is untested so far. But we did listen with glee as the net controller in Hawaii would announce "Loud and clear as usual, Australis" even as we connected from places as far away as Mexico, French Polynesia, and the Cook Islands in the southern hemisphere. These plates were delivered on time and to spec, providing the grounding performance we wanted for years of sailing--this despite hard growth and calcification of the surface bronze that was easily scraped off to restore radio performance. 5
