Customer Reviews

Great piece of mind for a small price! This is an easy to install means to protect your basement from sewer backups. My brother recently went through a headache due to a city line backing up during maintenance in the street being performed by city crews. That made me realize that even though you may not be in an area prone to sewer backups; something as simple as a city crew working out at the street could cause havoc and headaches. The installation is rather simple. It does come a little looser than the inside diameter of the drain; so be careful not to drop it down the drain! I almost made that mistake. Tighten it up just enough to press into a clean flood drain and then tighten the rest of the way when you get it where you want. You can slide this down the pipe to fit below any flood grates installed on the drain - so those will go back in place as they were before.I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a basement connected to a sewer system. 5Beware... will rust up in less then six months. I bought this because our whirlpool would drain faster then the drain could handle it causing it to come up the floor drain. This worked marginally well stopping most of the flow, but still seeped up past the float probably because there wasn't a whole lot of pressure to push up the stopper hard to the bottom of the guard. I was able to throttle down the output of the tub with a ball valve and it was tolerable. Well, it was in less than 6 months when it started to hang up and not push the float at all. Pulling the cover off the floor drain revealed the problem. In less than 6 months the metal plates of the float were corroded with rust causing the pin attached to the float to bind not allowing the float to rise. It didn't occur to me when I installed it, but who in their right mind builds a device that is clearly going to be wet often not out of stainless steel or aluminum! The screws are stainless, but I had to really work to get them to come out without snapping because the threads of the bottom guard was so rusted. Total fail in my opinion. 2Doesn't Fit Great and Water Seal is Unproven Bought this after our basement flooded to go in the floor drain. Water hasn't risen in to test float ability of stopper so I can't speak to that although I am a little worried about it's water tightness. It fits very snug and you need to make sure the measurements on your pipe are accurate. I had to chisel some accumulation from the pipe to get it to fit and it still doesn't fit quite like I imagined based on videos online of similar products. If we ever get heavy rains in this area again I'll update to tell whether this kept the water out or not. Right now and for the price, it serves as a little bit of insurance for the mind. 3I tested the drain and it works fine. The only thing I didn't like are the top screws My five stars go to Karen from Gatzies for professionally and promptly resolving an issue I had with this order. The unit itself gets four stars, Here are few tricks I used to achieve a set it/forget it project.I installed this unit in a basement shower stall where years ago I had a couple inches of sewer backup, not enough to flow over the five inches tall shower base but still .. We're retired and spend time in a second home so I wanted to feel sewer-proof and I think this unit might do the trick. The shower drain is a 2" pvc pipe,so my concern was about the floating/stop bottom breaking off the top of the unit .Who knows what can happen after few years of use, rust, filth, urine by our four and two legged friends , global warming .... etc. etc. imagine trying to retract the lost rubber cup from the bowels of the drain system !So I cut a 1,1/2" pvc pipe up to 1" from the potentially failing bottom float and dropped it inside the 2" drain . To facilitate draining I also drilled a bunch of 3/8" hole around this "catch" pipe ( 1,1/2 pvc sh ..) I tested the drain and it works fine. The only thing I didn't like ,thus the four stars, are the three (6/32 ?) tightening screws,They're the ones that expand the rubber seal to the inside wall of the drain pipe. They're small and very shallowly slotted .It takes a lot of effort to tighten them while you lay on your stomach looking for another screwdriver that might fit all while keeping the float from moving deeper and deeper in the drain pipe due to the screwdriver push and turn .I would have preferred Phillips head screws and that alone could have saved me on hour of aggravation,My suggestion, whether you insert a "catch" pipe or not , is to make yourself a hook wire from an old old coat hanger so you can hold the unit until the screws are tight and the unit feels secure , the damn thing can actually fall in the drain pipe ,or at the very least move away from you.! 5Great product with some basic ingenuity required. This is a great product, and it's the second one I've purchased. For everyone saying this is too small - you have to tighten the crap out of the screws to get the rubber grommet to compress and expand outward. I actually used an impact screwdriver to get enough compression out of it. No need for wrapping it in electrical tape to expand it or anything. Just tighten the screws slowly and evenly, in a star pattern (like the lug nuts on a wheel). I can say from experience that the screws can handle a lot of tightening without stripping out. Just go slowly and evenly. For everyone saying it rusts - of course it rusts. It's made of steel and it's sitting in a wet drain. I smeared mine in silicone grease, and I mean I smeared it all over the thing. This should prevent rust for a good while, especially if the drain isn't constantly in use, like a garage floor drain. This keeps the float moving freely and prevents corrosion. 5Flood Guard Float Valve This is a really simple float valve that is well designed and crafted. I have an outdoor stairwell with a below grade landing that leads into the garage. This landing is equipped with a floor drain connected to storm water disposal. During particularly high flow rain events this floor drain would back-charge and allow some rain water to enter into the garage area. This float guard has resolved that issue. Terrific!! 5It worked perfectly. It kept water in my floor ... It worked perfectly. It kept water in my floor drain from backing up. Unfortunately, in the torrential rains we had the weekend of August 12-14, the water found other "vays". It backed up through my utility room basin and overflowed onto the floor, and through my kitchen sink, also overflowing. It even rose to the toilet and tub on the second floor. (I was out of town that weekend, but that must have been a monsoon.)The culprit, it turned out, was a clog in the city's sewer line out under the street. Once they took care of that, no more backups. Amazingly, none of my neighbors on my street had this problem; perhaps I got the brunt because my house is nearest to where the under-street clog was. But I'm going to leave the flood guard in, because it really does work. I'm impressed. 5WORTHLESS I had these installed in my floor drains. Heavy rains caused the drain pipes to fill up and push back into the basement.THESE "FLOOD GUARDS" DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ! Spent last night cleaning the dirt and muck out of the basement. 1good for water, not for stink. Needed a way to keep drain smells from stinking up the lower level offices. This one will prevent backflow of water, but not stink. Similar items have a spring which keeps the seal closed. Sent this one back for the other type. 2Doesn't really work. Mine would not rise on it's own. I greased it, followed the instructions. I reinstalled it twice but that made no difference. And it's not tight - when the water rises, and you pull it up, water still comes through the edges (not the edges where you installed it, as if you didn't make it tight enough, but the edges of the plug, even after it rose). 1
