Customer Reviews

like the light but not install I have installed four 24" and one 18" lights and really like the performance of the lights. As to whether they last the advertised 50,000 hr remains to be seen. If the lights were on continuously, the 50,000 hr translates to 5.7 years. If they were on 1/3 of the time, then they should last 17.1 years. I felt like the installation should have gone much smoother. The first major hurdle was removing the LED assembly from the housing. Since I was unsuccessful, I call the customer service number. Even with their help, I still could not remove it. Finally, the customer service person suggested an alternate way and I will include my description of what worked for me.To Remove the LED: Hold the unit with the back toward your body and the on/off switch on the right hand side. Notice the four tabs holding LED module in place. Use both hands with thumbs on back of unit and fingers behind the LED strip. Starting on either right or left end and pull fingers toward your body. This will allow you to unhook the edge of the LED module from the tab. One wonders if any consumer testing was done before the product was put on the market. Before removing the plastic diffuser, note the orientation because once the unit it mounted under the cabinet, it can be confusing. Also, when replacing the diffuser, make sure you are pulling toward you instead of pushing away from you. If you are pushing instead of pulling, the entire unit may come unmounted from the cabinet. The overall design is a small departure from the fluorescent fixtures that were used in the past. It seems like GE missed the opportunity to completely redesign the unit. Having either two or four external ears with a predrilled mounting hole would work fine because the unit is hidden by the bottom of the cabinets. Instead of making the electrical connections on the interior of the unit, make them on the exterior of the unit. Supply a male electrical connector that the owner installs to house wiring; this connector would then mate with the factory provided female connector. This way, there is no disassembly of the unit in order to mount it to the cabinet. The 24" units have electrical knockout plugs in the middle. The 18" unit does not have a center knockout; bad design!! 4I have installed dozens of under cabinet lights and have never encountered one like this. Once the light was installed I wish I could rate this light in two ways. One star for installation. Five Stars for the light itself. I have installed dozens of under cabinet lights and have never encountered one like this. Once the light was installed, it was great. However, whoever designed the fixture needs to spend the rest of his life installing them - it would be the equivalent of spending eternity in hell. Why would anyone design an under cabinet light fixture where you had to take it all apart, screw the frame to the cabinet, and reassemble the led assembly back together - all done upside down. Since it will be installed UNDER a cabinet, why not just have a few tabs around the outside of the frame to screw into the cabinet. You're not going to see it anyway. That way you wouldn't have to mess with reassembling the LED light itself. The wiring is very tight, but doable. It's a great light. Just be prepared to spend way more time than you expect, and have plenty of patience. 3Great under cabinet light and customer service! I ordered 4 of these last year and they were installed with a dimmer in October 2018. It's been 6 months and they are still working great. Good color and dims great! My tenant mistakenly thought there was something wrong, but he didn't realize someone flipped the individual switch on the unit to off. I contacted Jasco (the seller on Amazon for GE products) and they were fantastic!! They were fast about trying to resolve what the problem was. Luckily it was just user error! 5Great replacement for our fluorescent models Great replacement for our fluorescent models. Note this is hard wired and some of the negative reviewers obviously did not know what that meant. We had mini fluorescent models installed in our kitchen and swapped them out for these and added a dimmer and couldn't be happier. The color is much warmer than fluorescent but not as warm as dimmed halogen. Still, they are a much more natural color and being dimable is great. Installation was easy, the units have knock-out holes on the back and ends for the wiring and each included one strain relief. 5Nice unit but beware dimensions! Replaced a fluorescent tube style under cabinet light with one of these and love the light. Matches the kitchen granite countertops and the backsplash color pretty well (3000K). HOWEVER, LEDs have a "ballast" too and it's contained in the fixture and the fixture is pretty thin so if you're not careful, the wire coming out from the wall COULD end up entering the fixture right where their ballast is located and trust me - there isn't enough room! . . unless you're using three separate wires from conduit or a loom. . . . . don't ask me how I know that . . . . . 4More Light than I needed Installed this to replace a fluorescent fixture above my washer and dryer. I had a 24 inch fluorescent replaced with 18 inch led. It worked great, I would give this 5 stars except for two design problems.1. Installation is not easy, it is a two person job working upside down, the screws are so small that you should just plan to loose them a few times on the floor prior to getting it installed. The light fixture has to be taken apart to wire and to mount. I used drywall anchors to mount it above the washer dryer as the screws they provide are for cabinet mounting.2. There is not a lot of room inside the fixture for the supply wire coming into the light, takes extra time to get mounted. On the positive side I am looking forward to not having to replace those fluorescent tubes every few years and driving around looking for a place to dispose of them. 4Not easy to install, just takes patience I replaced a fluorescent undercabinet light with this fixture. It was a bear to install since you're working upside down, and it takes patience. When I got frustrated I took a coffee break. Plan on two hours from opening the box to turning it on. Installation is straight forward, just takes time and patience. The final result is worth it. The LED light is wonderful in the kitchen - bright and probably won't be replaced again in my lifetime. I'm going to replace the rest of my undercabinet fixtures with LED's. 5Installation of this undercounter device can be difficult. Gentlemen: I recently installed three of the GE undercounter LED fixtures. I have done quite a few home improvement tasks myself over the past several years so I am reasonably knowledgeable about installing these types of kitchen improvements. I feel the design of these undercounter "appliances" could be improved as follows:1. Predrill 2 to 4 additional screw holes in the base housing. Once the base housing is secured under the cabinet using the "key-hole" pre-stamped openings, it should be more permanently anchored using the additional screw holes which will prevent the fixture from moving during installation of the cover/housing. These pre-stamped key holes are helpful to hold the unit in place, particularly if you are doing the installation alone. When attempting to install the cover/housing I found myself pushing the base housing loose from the "key-hole" screw holes in the base of the housing. Very frustrating!2. Provide an additional strain relief fitting in the hardware packet. In my installation I installed three units which required two fittings, one "upstream and one downstream" with two knockouts.3. Consider making the units about 1/2" wider (not thicker) in order to more easily accommodate the wire fittings and 120 volt AC service wires. This would facilitate the installation of the cover/housing. I found that in my installation, the three electrical "push-in" fittings were very close together making it difficult to install the cover/housing without pinching the the fittings and connecting wires.4. Consider eliminating the "catch points" as the means of fixing the cover/housing to the base housing. Without the additional anchor screws suggested in Item 1 above, I found that pressing the cover/housing under the catch points was very difficult without moving the base housing out of the "key-hole" screw holes. Once the cover/housing is partially installed and anchorage to the underside of the cabinet is lost, you will have to remove the entire hosing to re-anchor the base housing. So, replacing the catch points with other fasteners, such as screws, would not require applying a force to the cover/housing. I must admit that I used a few 4-letter words during this job, hence the reason for this review. 3Very bright, warm light. Easy install for me. I was hesitant about buying this light because of reviews saying the install was very difficult, but it was a breeze for me. I'm not an expert, either: thirty years old, female, not particularly strong but I know my way around tools. I've installed and repaired a couple ceiling fans, and have installed some track lighting. This was easier than most of those projects. I installed this on the bottom of a kitchen cupboard and everything went smoothly! The instructions are not super detailed, and maybe that's where others ran into trouble. But if you have a general knowledge of electric and light installation, you should be fine. 5Good light. Installation moderate in difficulty. I like the light overall. The 3000K light color is pleasantly warm. As with some of the other reviewers, I had a bit of trouble installing. The trick to getting the diffuser off is rest your hand on the steel strip holding the switch and use your finger pads to catch the diffuser at its farthest point and pull it back. // My wiring comes out of a hole centered left to right, so I had to drill a 1/2" hole in the fixture centered left to right. There should have been a knockout there. // My other observation was the screws connecting the light panel to the housing were ridiculously short. Given the tight space allowed for the wiring, it was impossible for me to push the light panel up and start the short screw (one side could be started in advance. I ended up switching to 1/2" small sheet metal screws, which worked. // I should note that I installed the light over the kitchen sink, probably the hardest installation. In conclusion, I recommend the light but warn that the installation might be challenging. 4
