Customer Reviews

The best screen to save silverware This is the best disposal cover for those of us who save all of our food trimmings for the compost pile. It allows small bits and pieces of waste to fall through to the disposal (which can be run just once a day for a couple of seconds) while completely stopping silverware etc. from falling in. I had one of these for more than five years before the little cross pieces started breaking. The new one looks like it might actually be a bit more reinforced at the central point. But I bought two anyway - they certainly aren't expensive for how handy they are. 5Saves the tableware from the disposal! Very handy.I had one for about 20 years, and it finally cracked, so I had to go find a replacement. It has saved my forks and spoons from slipping into the disposal a bazillion times! Most others are 'screens' that do not allow the food crumbs to go down the disposal when I hand wash the dishes; This one does. The local Home Improvement and Hardware stores do not carry them, so thankfully Amazon does. I bought extras for friends, and a spare for me.5Great concept but a bit weak. Excellent strainer - stops cutlery but allows small pieces of food to go into garbage disposal. I prefer this to the metal ones that stop every little thing and then clog up. The only problem is it is a little weak. Somehow we have put too much force on the knob and it has cracked around it - not sure if this was chronic use over 4 months or a single occasion of something heavy being rested on it. 3Good quality, good designI was looking for something to block small spoons and small objects from dropping into the garbage disposal and getting damaged or damaging the disposal. A metal teaspoon measurer fell victim to the disposal. I don t want to reach in even though it has a magnetic activation. We had a plastic one with medium holes that fell apart and covered part of the metal sink around the drain, allowing buildup of film and debris. Then a fine metal mesh that clogged and was a pain to constantly clean. This looked like the perfect solution; and the only item close to what could solve my needs. I was worried about the negative reviews but decided to take a chance due to its perfect problem solving fit. I have used it non-stop for 3 months. I waited to write a review to see if it would break. Based on the in-depth reviews, thank you fellow shoppers, I made a decision on how to use it to avoid problems. Since cracking was an issue I make sure not to smack it on the side of the garbage to clean off. I gently wipe off any debris into the garbage and just rinse off my hand while rinsing it to get any last bits. Since it sits down in the garbage disposal it is below the level of dishes stacking on it. I stack to the sides not on top. When poring off hot water into the sink I remove it to avoid heat tempering the plastic which could cause it to crack. With a few simple conscious use methods it has help up well and I expect it will continue. The flipping that occurs in my sink is easy, I gently push on one side or use my pinky to flip it back. I make sure not to put the water on directly over it but slightly to the side and it works just fine. I highly recommend this product and would buy one again if I needed; since it has not broken I won t need too.5Just what I wantedAfter reading several of the reviews on this product it sounded exactly like what I have been looking for in local stores for months. I wanted a strainer that kept big stuff, like silverware, from dropping into the garbage disposal but allowing small food bits to pass through. I purchased one that had a screen but found out in short order it trapped everything and had to be removed and rinsed out several times a day. We have had this one only a couple of days but it does just what I wanted. It does catch larger food like green beans but most of the stuff that get rinsed off plates runs right through. It is sitting on top of a standard Insinkerator disposer and is a little loose in the opening but that has no effect on it working and makes removal very easy. If you are looking for something that keeps all food out then this is not the product for you but as stated it is just what I wanted.5Saves your silverware and shot glasses from disposal destruction! On festive evenings several shot glasses will end up in my kitchen sink. Sometimes one falls through the weak rubber guard into the garbage disposal. Where it will get instantly destroyed the next time someone uses it. Then I get to pick out all the shattered bits and work to un-jam the whole thing. It's messy and often ends in bloodshed and frustration...This disposal screen was the perfect solution. 3 1/8" diameter (approx) fits most standard sink disposal openings. Small handle makes it easy to grab and remove. Works very well - no more shot glasses and silverware falling through the flimsy disposer splash guard!5It works, but it is not sturdy or high qualityThe diameter of this strainer matches my disposal very well. It can wiggle around a little, so it fits very easily. It is large enough that there is no danger of the entire thing falling through. The holes are the perfect size. They let through most little food particles. I've haven't had this strainer get clogged yet. Either the particles are small enough to fit through the holes, or large enough that water can get around them. Our silverware is too large even on the handle ends to fit through the holes, so it effectively keeps what it should out of the disposal.I wish there were a knob to grab on each side. If this strainer gets flipped over, I have to get a chopstick to lift it out. This is cheap plastic and not very high quality. I'd like a version of this item made of metal. I'm afraid the plastic on this will break after a few months. I'd be willing to pay several times more for a sturdier version that I would never have to replace.3Love the designI've had this for about 4 months now. My husband has a habit of letting things fall into the garbage disposal, which causes all sorts of problems. Most screens have holes that are so small it keeps water from flowing well. I wanted small pieces to be able to flow through, but not forks, spoons, caps, etc. This works great for those concerns!! Unfortunately, I'm already having to order another one. I'm disappointed it only lasted a few months before breaking apart -- especially because it's kinda pricey for a screen -- but I am going to try it again because the design is so good. I hope I have a longer life with this next one.4Peace of MindWould have never thought of ordering this, but started to worry about someone in the household sticking their fingers in the disposal. Although this won't completely prevent getting into the drain, it is a great deterrent. Silverware, lids, rubber bands and other medium pieces are kept out of the drain and disposal, but smaller food bits make it through easily. Simple and easy to use. Wondering why we didn t think of getting this sooner?Once we saw how well this works for us, we have been recommending this product to friends and family.#safetyscreen #garbagedisposal #kitchenaccessories #willandkaraleighPlease click the >> Helpful << box below if this review helped You! =^D5Will work for some folks Bought this to replace the rubber "insert" that is usually used with disposals. The flexible rubber insert gets oogie very fast, food gets stuck in it and splashed up underneath it and it grosses me out. So tried this. It is a little large, so it doesn't fit inside the drain, and as others have commented, it does "flip" with running water. But overall, I like it because you take it out easily, put stuff in and run disposal. 3perfect for safety doing the dishes has been added to the chore list and this little screen helps to make sure nothing accidentally falls down the disposal. Fits perfect and the holes are a good size so food can still be washed down (not large pcs but normal pcs)A little added safety to keep anything from falling in the disposal is always a good thing! 5Good value! Given the low price, and a couple reviews indicating poor durability, I bought three of these to have spares; however, I doubt I'll ever need them unless I drop a knife square on the thing. The material seems durable enough, and we like the black color and larger openings compared to the standard "white-disk-with-holes" type commonly available in stores. The "grid" style of this piece allows small bits of food past without removal -- handy when rinsing off the cat-food plates. The "white-disk-with-holes" version does help to muffle the sound of the disposal a bit, though. The only improvement I would suggest for this product is to add a handle/knob so there is one on both sides. If flipped upside-down, it can be a hassle to get this screen out of the disposal opening.Overall, recommended.Edit 12/20/14 - Spares are still under the sink. The reviews stating these are not durable appear to be unfounded in my particular experience. 4Knob is too big, also not a "screen"Considering there's not much too this, it either fits and therefore works or it doesn't, and then it's all about durability, which according to a few reviews seems to be lacking. The reason I took a star off is because the knob/handle is too large. If it were smaller, the sink plug could fit right over it, allowing you to leave this in place at all times. As it is, the knob gets in the way, so this has to be removed every time you want to plug the sink. Not only is this an inconvenience, but given the apparent lack of durability this only increases the likelihood of it becoming damaged. Also, based on the word "screen," I expected it to have a screen material across it, and was actually planning on using it as a replacement strainer for the other side of the sink. I'm not removing any stars, because had I looked closer at the picture I would have been able to tell that isn't the case, but I'm just mentioning it in case somebody happens to read this and not make the same mistake. I ended up keeping it to use for its intended purpose, and it is nice to not have to worry if something went down the drain before running the disposal, so it wasn't a total loss.Update 9/19/15: It's been a little over a year, and with constant use and regularly switching this out for the sink plug, typically setting it on the top of the sink but sometimes leaving it in the sink to be banged around by everything else in the sink, I've had no issues with durability. I would still love to be able to just leave it in place, as there are times I hesitate to run the disposal after pulling the plug on a full sink, since this isn't in place to keep something from sneaking into the drain. Perhaps I'll modify the plug to remove the piece that interferes with the handle on this.4O'Malley's strainer is much better, but I still haven't found the perfect strainerAfter four months of use, this strainer fell to pieces. I replaced it with Garbage Disposal and Sink Strainer Guard - White Plastic - Manufactured in USA and am much more satisfied with the O'Malley strainer. Here's a comparative review. There are three main problems with this Fox Run strainer. Firstly, the plastic mesh part is too thin. While the outside circumference is thick and strong, the inner lines are much thinner and are what broke on me (see pictures).Secondly, there is a grasping tab on only one side of this strainer. However, when pouring lots of water down the drain, it is easy for the strainer to get flipped upside down. At that point, it was impossible for me to remove the strainer without wedging a fork tine into one of the mesh holes to pull it out--that is what first led to the plastic starting to crack on me, after pulling it out many times with a fork. So, yes, it was kind of my fault the plastic started to break, but I was doing the best I could given the lack of a knob on one side to grasp. Some other reviewers have had theirs break with normal use.The third problem is that the holes are too big and allowed my toddler's sippy cup straws to fall through.I replaced the broken strainer with the O'Malley's one, and am much more satisfied with it. I'm sure this Fox Run strainer will work well for some folks, but it doesn't work for my needs, while O'Malley's does. On O'Malley's the plastic is stronger and thicker. The holes are smaller but not too small to strain well even when food accumulates. And there is a tab to grasp on both sides of the strainer. The one disadvantage is that the grasping tabs are not flared, so it can be hard at times to get a good grasp to pull the strainer out. I think the O'Malley strainer is a four-star strainer. Maybe there's a five-star one out there, too. If I were purchasing again, I'd now look for one like O'Malley's but which has flared grasping knobs.Given my own concerns about which strainer to buy, and my initial bad choice, I thought I should try to help others do better. I even like the white color better than the black, and it hasn't gotten stained at all despite all the staining liquids that have gone through it. If you want a simple, reversible plastic strainer, I don't know that you can get better than O'Malley's. Though if you find one with flared handles, comment to let me and others know you've found my theoretically perfect strainer.2Effective strainerI got this to replace our conventional metal strainer that would let some water through, but it was so slow that the sink would begin to fill up. This plastic strainer lets water through freely but keeps things bigger than a quarter inch in width from getting into the garbage disposal. Our disposal has rubber flaps that are worn and not very effective at preventing forks and spoons from falling into it. This plastic strainer is perfect for not impeding water flowing into the sink, yet it protects the disposal from getting utensils or other object into it. It has a small handle for grabbing it when you want to clean it, but it's only on one side of the strainer so you must be sure it faces the right way.Saw some complain that this is not durable, but I can't imagine it breaking without considerable force being used.5
