Customer Reviews

No more dealing with gray cards. This is as ... No more dealing with gray cards. This is as simple as it gets when getting your white balance correct. Cover your lens, shoot, set, done. I had my first experience with an expodisc at a wedding and moving between rooms, inside/outside, even with the changing ambient light, this disc made sure every shot was balanced correctly and saved me a lot of post-processing time. 5A must have for professional photographers I can t believe I have gone ao long without this. As a corporate event photographer, I would spend hours doing wb adjustments but no more of that. This thing is spot on and so easy to use. I have already used it for an event and saved so much time. It was odd to see image after image download spot on. It is teicky to get the exact wb without this thing. 5Works great ! It works. I shoot weddings and have one particular location we call the "orange room". Dark orange wood on the walls so it speeds up the White Balance correction. I typically go into the room and shoot an image with the flash on and flash off. I do not try to do a custom white balance on a wedding day.At home I go into Lightroom and select each image and do the dropper white balance adjustment in Lightroom. I now know the number for the white balance. I can then apply it to pictures with flash and the other balance to those images without flash. Once I know the white balance value I may choose the images shot in the room with the flash one and adjust one of them to the correct white balance. I review it and fine tune it to my liking. Then I select all the images I want to adjust using Shift-click, then I press the "Sync Settings" and choose what I want synced; in this case white balance, then click okay. Orange pictures are now white balance corrected. Looks great. Done. 5Good for white balance, a little iffy on light metering Originally I learned about the expodisc on one of Zack & Jody s online workshops. They made it out to be great for both white balance and light metering. However I noticed in the company s marketing, that while light metering is mentioned as one thing it can be used for, really it s main function is as a white balance tool. And after using, i can see why. So i feel like it does a pretty good job with white balance. It definitely warms up a photo in comparison to auto white balance. I think that there is a range in which white balance is a personal preference thing. And this definitely balances on the far warm side of acceptable. I like it, but I know some people do prefer their photos more towards the cooler side of acceptable. I have not used the warming portrait filters that come with it. I feel like the regular disc is already as warm as I would want it. So I think those filters could possibly make things too warm. The light metering part is where things kind of go awry. I even called customer service to make sure i was using it right, but I notice that my photos are consistently under exposed by a stop or two when using this. I suppose I could use exposure compensation, but I really shouldn t have to. I was finding that I actually find the exposure coming from my in camera meter to be more to my liking. A grey card seems pretty dead on though. I was really hoping this could be an all purpose tool, but it looks like i may be using this mainly as a white balance tool. 4Where has this been all my life?? I was pretty skeptical when a fellow photographer told me about the ExpoDisc but holy crap, it's amazing. My goal this year is to improve my straight-out-of-camera images and the ExpoDisc is exactly the tool I need. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to use it and the difference between using this versus auto or one of the white-balance presets is mind blowing. The colors are spot on and the lighting is perfect. I don't know the physics behind it but if you are taking professional portraits, just buy it. It's probably the cheapest and most useful piece of gear I've bought in years. 5Super conveinent and accurate color balancing tool Gone are the days of holding a white card up to my subject and framing it for custom white-balance. What a great idea! I have only one piece of usability advice: If like me you setup your camera to always display current set exposure (i.e. you set your viewfinder to follow how dark or light your exposure is prior to pressing the shutter release), when you place the ExpoDisc over the end of the lens you may need to temporarily adjust your ISO or aperture to let in more light to compensate and allow your camera to read the disc properly. Otherwise you may receive an underexposure error when trying to set a custom white balance. When your WB is set you then need to reset your exposure settings back to where you had them before. If, like most people, you do not set your camera viewfinder display to follow your exposure settings, then this is not an issue. I know this can be confusing. What I mean by "follow your exposure settings" is that your viewfinder will darken and lighten according to your settings. I am not referring to the settings information, such as ISO, SS, Aperture, and so forth that is displayed. This is predominately an option in mirrorless DLSRs such as the Panasonic GH5 and Canon RP cameras, but can also be an issue if you pre-stop your iris in other mirrored-cameras or when using fully manual lenses with on-lens iris control. While it sounds complicated, its really a no-brainer and is still a lot easier than using a white card. 5ExpoDisc 2.0 Excellence When I first read about the ExpoDisc, I wondered how in the WORLD it could work.. You know, really "work" at creating perfect white balance for a photographer. I tend to be a more visual learner, so before purchasing this product a few weeks ago, I went to town searching for information on the ExpoDisc process. After researching, I purchased, and upon receiving, I am absolutely thrilled with its performance with the Sony A77. Not only is it super simple to use and maneuver, I am also so impressed with the outcome of my images after ED'ing my white balance. Now I can create custom white balance and get a perfect image.. Every time!I love that it is encouraged to purchase an ED for the size of your largest lens. I actually purchased a size up from mine and with the included carrying case and handy lanyard strap, there won't be any issues of misplacement. The ExpoDisc process is so easy. Access your camera's custom white balance function and turn your lens focus to manual. With the ExpoDisc in place, check your exposure, then shoot from your model's perspective (if possible). Afterwards, simply set your custom white balance using the data from the image shot (and don't forget to turn your lens back to AF, if necessary). I would encourage anyone who struggles with white balance or wants to learn more about white balance to give the ExpoDisc a try... It's such a small investment for such an amazing little piece of equipment! 5It is working okay for me I like it. I have used it just a bit. I have not used it extensively but I will be doing so shortly during my shoots. The only downside is that I bought the "larger" size based on reviews but it did not go over a 72 mm lens. I/you can hold it over the lens and it will work. Make sure you see no outside light creeping in. I called the seller. She was really nice and explained this is a known problem. I am hoping a solution will come along. If you run into this problem know you have to take your time to get the right result. This is not a "snap on and get the reading" moment. It is really important to watch the recommended videos ( You Tube} before you use this. It is also vitally important to remember to switch your lens to to manual focus and then return to auto focus. You will be very frustrated if you neglect this step. 4Does What It Claims To Do Does an excellent job with the white balancing. Just make sure you point it to the primary light source or else you will get some skewed colors when snapping photos. It helps to snap the photo from where your subject will be at pointing towards the primary light source. It's a little tricky when there are multiple light sources. Save your money and buy the biggest ExpoDisc. Simply place the clear white side over your camera lens when you have the correct exposure setting and take a picture of it. You will most likely need to switch to manual focus in order to get the shot. Then go into your camera settings, choose custom white balancing and select the photo taken with the ExpoDisc. You may need to experiment a bit to get the correct white balancing. Comparison photo provided for your viewing pleasure. 4A No-Brainer for Those Shooting Sports in Gyms .... and Elsewhere. I do a lot of sports photography and spend a great deal of time in poorly lit gyms or those with odd orange color casts from the various lighting types and light bounced from the polished wood floors. In the past I set my WB at Auto crossed my fingers and hoped to be able to correct the color in post production. Those days are gone. This product is an absolute "no brainer." I saved enough time in post within the first week of use to more than justify the cost. White is now WHITE, instead of ivory or milky orange. There are other ways to set your WB. But this gets the job done quickly and brilliantly. 5
