Customer Reviews

PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU OWN A MAC! Before buying this product I read all of the reviews. Nervous about getting this device for my Mac Mini I dove in and ordered it. It came in a timely manner. It is small. Great. It is easy to set up, just plug it in. Great. But when I turned my monitor on. Nothing. Yikes.... Another Mac person who bought this product warned that there were not any MAC drivers on the CD that came with the device, or on the Diamond website. Check. He is right. That is still true as of this review (9-30-10). But being like a pit bull with the Internet, I knew I could probably figure it out which is why I ordered it anyway. I figured I would give it a try being somewhat optimistic in general. The other reviewer was definitely correct. BUT..... here is the great news! when I opened the device I noticed that printed directly on the device was the company name "Display Link." Aha! They might have the drivers. Sure enough. The drivers were there on their website. Here is the url for the MAC drivers: [...] I downloaded it and voila! My monitor came on. I was thrilled. So alas, like many new devices these days the hardware company makes one thing, and the software is developed by another company. So wonderful Mac User, don't despair. The product is there. Its a great little product. Without the USB adapter there would be no way I could run two screens on my mac mini. My mini is about 3 years old so it only has one port for a monitor. I use the screens for Pro Tools and recording music in my home studio and the device is working great!!! Good luck! 5BEWARE MAC USERS! READ: I WAS JUST LIKE YOU TRYING TO BOOST MY MUlTYTASK AND I DID NOT WANT TO HEAR OTHERS REVIEWS, SO HERE IS MY HONEST REVIEW:I was looking forward to buying one of this for my 2013 MacBook Pro for a good 6 months and when I finally did I was very dissapointed, (I run MacOs Mojave with 16 RAM, !TB SSD and intel i5 for those wondering)When I tried to install the drivers it would not work, I tried over 4 different files, so I started looking on their website and to my surprise- VERSIONS RUNNING 10.13+ or MOJAVE ARE VERY UNSTABLE AND THE DRIVERS FOR IT ARE STILL ON A BETA PHASE!So I finally installed the software Update, and I noticed different flaws after a few hours of use.W A R N I N G (Consider the following before buying):-The picture runs with a some sort of delay/lag just enough to make you unconfortable, (specially if you require multi tasking and heavy duty work)-NOT SUITABLE FOR VIDEO STREAMING/EDITING-NOT SUITABLE FOR GAMING-IMAGE GETS LAGGY AND FEELS AS IF IT RUNS AT 30FPS***And Finally the worst***-THE IMAGE RANDOMLY CUTS OFF/ GOES OUT/ GLITCHES OUT/ STARTS BLINKING TO A BLACK SCREEN VERY OFTEN. (This is Driving me stupidly crazy and is IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK WITH)CONSIDER DIFFERENT ALTERNATIVES AND DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. 1Not as advertised Though I did not find the screen quality to be amazing with this, it did in theory work. My issue is this product, along with a few others recently i might add, are not being sold as advertised. I purchased this product assuming it would include the HDMI & VGA adapters AS STATED ON THE BOX AND ON THE DESCRIPTION. However, as you can see from my picture, the box is not the same and it does not include the advertised parts. Had to spend another $12 after the fact to get the part needed for this to work (in most cases) . 2Easy to use - Mac OS 10.6 and later kinda challenging, though. I recently purchased a larger external monitor for my MacBook Pro, so I had an "extra" 19" LCD monitor sitting around. Talking with my son, I told him I'd like to be able to hook up this old monitor, but my MBP only has one video out. He mentioned a friend of his uses the Diamond USB video device with his MacBook Pro and has had good luck with it, so I ordered one on the spot from Amazon.Upon arrival I noted that the included driver software didn't include drivers for Mac OS 10.6, although the packaging said "Apple OS X: Tiger 10.4.11, Leopard 10.5.6 (Intel-based Apple computers)". Diamond's web site has a driver download that claims to be for everything from Windows Vista to Mac OS X, however this is a .zip file and is unreadable by my MBP. Do your own Google search on "diamond usb video adaptor mac OS x driver 10.6 display link" and you'll get to the proper page (why doesn't Amazon allow us to embed URL's in our posts? What is this, 1995?).Once I had the driver installed, I plugged in the provided cable, the adaptor and my old LCD monitor, and things sprang to life - just like that. I went into Display Preferences to set up the monitor arrangement, and had my MBP and two external monitors working. One thing of note - I am a professional photographer, and color accuracy is important to me. I calibrate my monitors on a regular basis with a hardware/software tool from X-Rite, however the display hooked up through this Diamond Display Link product does not seem to respond to any calibration, including simply using the OSD (on screen display) of the monitor. No matter what I do, the monitor has a magenta cast. No big deal, as I mostly use the USB monitor to display my email client, but those of you looking for photo-quality output will absolutely be disappointed.I had also read that external monitors run through USB adaptors like this are slow to respond to dynamically-changing source like video or gaming. I've tried running 720p YouTube videos and they look pretty good, though there is a very slight lag. Again, since this isn't my primary (or even secondary) monitor, this isn't a big deal.Pro's:Easy to set up (once you find and install the proper Mac OS X drivers)Works plug and playComes with all required cablesUSB monitor fairly responsiveCon's:Color accuracy is non-existentA little slow responding to some videoOverall this is a well executed and reasonably priced product that does exactly what it is supposed to do. I recommend it. 4Works but some limitations This works and provides you with a low cost, USB connected, video "card" to plug a 2nd monitor into. I use it on a Mac (MBP late 2011) running 10.8.1 and now, 10.8.2 and am driving a Dell 24" widescreen LCD with it.Using the 1.8 and 2.0 drivers, this adapter works well enough, but either OS X or the driver creates a few weird problems with displaying and managing 2 monitors working as a single logical desktop. I stack my 2 monitors (the other running off the built-in displayport/DVI interface) in landscape mode so the space was 1920x2160). No matter what I do, having a window that displayed across both (i.e. a tall window in FF or MS Word) would cause the Mac to resize the window back to a single monitor any time the window was moved. Very frustrating and I suspect it's OS X that's doing it, although I can't really prove it. I tried running both monitors in portrait mode but the Mac/OS X seems likes that even less with some image drawing problems and these screens I'm using aren't IPS so that added some viewing angle problems to the mix.Another problem with this adapter is the lag of the image created through the limited bandwidth of the USB 2 interface. It's small but noticeable. Small video windows are fine (like Youtube in the default small or medium size) but anything larger starts to look a little like a slide show. Same with dragging windows around on the desktop provided by this card, they jump instead of moving smoothly. The jumping windows isn't a big deal but combined with the video playback and the inability to treat the workspace as a single area, it's a little frustrating, but may be the only option short of upgrading to the Retina Macs with HDMI and DP video plugs.Note that this adapter isn't made by Diamond, they resell it with their own branding - It's made by Displaylink and you will need to D/L the Mac SW from their website. Do a Google search for the Displaylink drivers for Mac to get the latest and check the OS compatibility for your version of OS X. 3Piece of Junk If you're thinking of using this with Mac, it won't work at all if the OS is High Sierra versions 10.13.4-10.13.6. The external monitor senses the signal, however, the screen remains black and doesn't display anything. The seller should specify this in the description so that people don't waste money. The box doesn't display this information at all either.Went to DisplayLink website to download and install the latest driver, but this is where the issue stems from. DisplayLink even states support for Mac devices running OS versions after 10.13.3 is limited.I wish I could give zero stars as this piece of junk is useless for what we needed it for. 1Not spectacular, but it works... It's just a standard USB video adapter that has your PC compress video and send to the adapter for display on the attached monitor. This was cheaper and came with accessories that my other adapter from a local retail store didn't have. Small complaint was the mini USB connector that makes it feel less durable. Some people may have issues if installing on a PC without having administrator privileges first (work computer). The different DisplayLink chipsets support certain maximum resolutions, so buy the cheapest adapter that supports the resolution you need. 42 years and still working Bought this in Dec 2016 for an older Inspiron desktop to connect to a 2nd 1080p monitor. I didn't want to use the VGA output from the computer because the image quality is so different than the DVI output. It took a couple of tries but once the the card is recognised, it has been working without problems for 2 years. I use the PC for basic web browsing, email and some simple photo editing, and this works just fine. I don't watch videos on this monitor so cannot speak for it's ability in that aspect, though with a USB 2.0 device one just needs to be realistic about it's speed limitation. One thing that puzzled me was that this did not work when connected to my 1080p Vizio tv's HDMI port. I am not sure why that is the case but with a Roku I am able to stream pretty much everything I want to watch, so that's not a problem really. Just one of those things that I wondered but it isn't worth my time to troubleshoot. 5Apple Mac Powerbook Pro OSX 10.6.8 ~ Extending Displays I read about this Display adapter while trying to find a solution to extending my displays. I was firstly very excited to find out it was possible and when I read all the positive feedback the choice was easy. The rebate was the icing on the cake :)In extending my displays saving on a monitor upgrade and ended up with more real estate. I also personally feel it's easier to organize individual displays.I picked up a nice 20" Dell Ultrasharp for $30- that I have rotated on its side (there is a sneaky preference to enable this in system prefs) to go along side my 22" Samsung SyncMaster 226BW Samsung SyncMaster 226BW 22-inch LCD Monitor. Once rotated the 20" Dell is a little deeper than the 22" Samsung. To the right of that is my Power book Pro Apple MacBook Pro MB134LL/A 15.4-inch Laptop (OLD VERSION) which is up on the older perspex iCurve - I think this is the best Laptop Stand ever made, nothing compares. The Samsung now uses the Macbook's DVI and the Dell uses the Diamond Display Adaptor DVI to adaptor then to USB hub.I mounted both the monitors on the wall 13" To 32" Cantilever And Articulating 3-In-1 Flat Panel Mount Vesa 75/100/200Mm Compatible, plugged everything in and then downloaded the OSX driver for the DIAMOND (after a quick google search) restarted and then voila!I personally can't see any image degradation and am very happy with this solution. 5Unfortunately my Mac was not equipped of running three monitors, this was the missing link. I initially started to look for an upgrade for 2010 Mac mini. So when I started looking at the prices for new computers I was horrified lol. The more I looked into it I started to realize that I wasn't getting a whole lot of bang for my buck to replace my old computer. I looked into selling my old Mac to make up some of the cost of a new computer. But the selling price was not worth it and the worry of selling it to the wrong person made it a good reason to keep it. I looked into upgrading my Mac, the prices of ram had dropped dramatically since I purchased it. I was able to purchase 3 Hp pavilion 22cwa which looks awesome if I don't mind saying. Unfortunately my Mac was not equipped of running three monitors, this was the missing link. 5
