Description

The semi-nude body of a woman is found in a two-bit Hollywood motel, a telephone cord wrapped around her throat; face frozen in a grimace of horror. Al Roberts confessed and has spent the last 29 years in prison.

Jimmy O'Brien, defense attorney to the dregs of the criminal world digs into the past, igniting a powder-keg that threatens to expose long-held secrets buried and forgotten with Roberts' confession. Secrets that could destroy the underground aristocracy that for years has held power in Los Angeles, city of broken dreams. Jimmy's ordeal takes him from the bleakness of Roberts' prison cell to the seedy streets of Hollywood, frantically searching to find out who took this DETOUR TO MURDER.

Customer Reviews

A Good SeriesWhile I have enjoyed the "Jimmy O'Brien series," I have some criticism of the editing. An English major NEVER accepts mixed tenses in a phrase(it either WAS or it IS, but not both), misplaced and/or extra words (the she asked...), name changes, etc. Furthermore, IF Mr. Sherratt is going to continue to refer to the seveth caVALRY, he needs to get it right!!! There was only ONE CaLVARY - and it is vastly different from his references to the imaginary "seventh" in both "Guilty Or Else" and "Detour to Murder"!!! If one is able to overlook glaring errors, one could enjoy his books...the characters are strong and he combines excitement, humor, hurt and pathos to weave a good story. 3Detour to MurderThis was a terrific story! It kept me guessing "whodunit" till about the end...I had my suspicions earlier, but changed my mind a couple of times. One thing I really appreciate is that the story tied up the loose ends. There are so many stories that you end up wondering what happened to one character or another after the end of the book. 4Very enjoyable and well told story! The time-frame of this story is in the recent past, not present day. There is almost a nostalgic or noir feel to the story and story telling. Very enjoyable read. Not similar to, but reminiscent of Michael Connolly's books - especially the Lincoln Lawyer series.A tale of murder and who DIDN'T do it! Our hero, in court to cover for a friend, meets a convicted felon who he learns really didn't do the crime. So begins the tale of "Detour to Murder". We travel through LA history, some film history and learn a lot along the way - as Jimmy O'Brien risks life and limb to learn the truth, and fix the injustices that have taken place. It's an exciting ride, so buckle up and read! 5Four StarsThe author had created a great protagonist for this series. Though the third book had a great story but had me screaming in my head from the stupidity, this part of the series really made up for it. A well written story of a long 30 year mystery involving murder, betrayal, love and of course snops in high places of power. Had to keep reminding myself that the setting is 1974, so no GPS, personal computers or even cellphones (how did they survive?!!!!) and that everyone basically had a lot more trust with others than today. Nice surprise ending. Looking forward to the final book of the Jimmy O Brien series. 4A Crackling Good Noir MysteryDETOUR TO MURDER is smoothly written and incredibly intriguing. I'm hooked on the Jimmy O'Brien series, and fell deeper in love with his cast of characters, particularly Rita and Sol. The feel of the time period is authentic, beautifully rooted in time and place. The story has enough twists and turns to keep you up at night, and Sherratt's talent weaving the tangled web is superb. I especially liked the empathy he evoked for the misunderstood accused prisoner, Al. Kudos, Mr. Sherratt! Now, on to the next book in the series! The Brimstone Murders (A Jimmy O'Brien Mystery Novel)Guilty or Else (The Jimmy O'Brien Mystery Series) 5Loved it. Period is 1970'sLoved it. Period is 1970's. Fast paced but with good detail. The Jimmy O'Brien Mysteries are all good. They center on pro bono cases were the defendant is innocent but in need of counsel. 5A Good Jimmy O'Brien MysteryThis was my second O'Brien mystery. I liked my first read and this second one did not disappoint. It's written with a no-nonsense style. No unnecessary fluff taking up space. The characters are developed to a point wherein the reader gets the feeling of knowing them.In this installment, the novel is set in 1974. Jimmy is assigned to represent a prisoner at a parole hearing. The prisoner is in the slammer 29 years. The original murder having taken place in 1945.Though almost broke, O'Brien goes pro-bono representing the prisoner.Did the accused commit the crime? Did someone else do the dirty deed? What sort of story will Mr. Sherratt weave to arrive at the conclusion? There's more than one twist thrown in. It makes for a fast, direct, rather satisfying read. 4Fantastic PlotThis is a Jimmy O'Brien noir mystery with a hitchhiker, a dead man, a stolen car and a mysterious lady killed in a sleazy motel in 1945. All of this leads to Jimmy in 1975 when he tries to prove a man jailed for 30 years is innocent of murder. A very convoluted plot with all ends tied up neatly. 5Fast becoming my favorite Crime/Suspense series next to "Joe Dillard" and very moderately priced, too!Book revolves around a convict wrongly accused of murder 29 years ago and the attempts by parties unknown to prevent the unlucky attorney from uncovering the same knowledge that would otherwise absolve him of the crime. Am 150 pages in and thoroughly enjoying being reacquainted with wise-cracking attorney Jimmy O'Brien, his partner luscious, Latino Rita, the ever- connected, big man Sol and of course the matronly receptionist Mabel. Book is character driven including many Hollywood stars from the 1970s including Sinatra and Mary Astor, an interesting plot and I find I am once again looking forward to all the twists and turns come the very end (also good to know that a new Jimmy O'Brien novel "Cyanide Perfume" just came out the past month so there is still more to read.) Very good book! 4Channeling Raymond Chandler????While this is a workman like tale paying distant homage to the 'Noir' subcategory, Sherrat is no Chandler and Jimmy O'Brien isnt Philip Marlowe. The big problem is Jimmy is a putz, which is a complete disconnect from the classic noir lead character. Sherrat has created a character with no charisma what-so-ever. He is likeable, but not charismatic. There is a scene in the story where Jimmy has a chance to bag the beautiful femme. As you read it you find yourself wishing Marlowe would come along and close the deal. Jimmy lets her get away with teasing the whole night and then slipping off to her apartment- alone. "Not tonight Jimmy". Give me a break. Marlowe would have closed the deal. Thats the type of charisma I'm talking about. In fact Jimmy has several female characters who should be having fantansies about him, yet who treat him like a younger brother. They are fond of him, but there is none of the sexual undercurrent that makes noir,... noir.Other problems include the narrative and dialogue. Both are stilted and amateurish. Sherrat includes the elements of the noir category, police corruption, beautiful but damaged women, the wrongly accused/convicted, big city locale- often L.A., but his verbiage lacks the urgency, and drive that the noir plot demands. What does work is the story itself. It is a worthwhile mystery that will keep you guessing to the very end. This why this story rates a four (4) rating.Bottom-line. This is well worth the current download price of .99 cents. Much more and it would be a 'skip'. 4
