Description

  • Wirelessly transmits and receives messages - The Dakota Alert M538-BS Base Station functions as a transceiver that can send and accept messages from other MURS radio units like the M538-HT radio
  • Offers private conversations - This radio unit features five channels with 38 privacy codes, which enables you to answer conversations that came from radio transceivers transmitting your code only
  • Operates for up to 2 miles - Even if you're up to 2 miles or farther (open line of sight, no walls/posts blocking) from another MURS radio, the M538-BS Base Station can still pick up the signal
  • Provides multi-use - Easily communicate with your staff wirelessly inside a warehouse, hotel or even outside a resort
  • Doesn't require FCC license - The device complies with the Federal Communications Commissions' rules and operates in 151.820MHz to 154.600MHz frequencies. No need to get an FCC license

Customer Reviews

Excellent product for both communication and safety. I bought two of these to go with the driveway alarm over a year ago. They have never let me down. Tells me whenever someone drives onto or walks onto the property through the front gate which is 400 feet from the house base unit and 500 feet from the shop base unit. No false alarms. My husband and I use it on a daily basis for communicating between shop and house. These are great and dependable units. I just ordered two of the same brand hand held walkie talkies to use while we are out in the woods. 5My experience with this in the middle of a city I had been reading reviews of this product and first became introduced to this via a book called Patriots written by J.W. Rawles editor of Survival Blog. I ordered a base station and two Walkie Talkies. When these units arrived I did some testing with the hand held units and in the middle of a big city, on foot and in my car, the test resulted in about good clear reception up to around 3000 ft. I had read that adding an external antenna to the base station would increase the range of the units base station. Subsequently, I ordered an external VHF radio antenna, 100ft of coax and a BNC connector. My existing TV antenna was old and I took it down and used the remaining 12 ft mast, mounted to an external 3inch vent pipe on the top crest of my roof as the mounting point. No guy wires were needed. Effectively the top of the mast is about 38 ft. My brother in law works at a Data Center located to the south an west of my home and was able to hear me when I transmitted (8 miles as the crow flys) away. To me, this is phenomenal for this MURS frequency band. (Caveat: My transmission had static intermixed with my words, but he could hear and understand me. I could also understand him when he responded from the Hand Held walkie talkie, also by Dakota alert. I'm thinking that by ordering a couple of Mobile antennas would greatly increase the range and clarity of this setup. Your experience may be different but mine far exceeded my expectations. I have a lot of experience with radios as my father worked for Motorola (the gold standard of radios for many years)selling their radios to Police, Fire, EMS and government agencies. I also have worked in EMS for almost 20 years. These little units to me are well worth what I paid for them. I suspect in a more rural environment, the range would be even better with less buildings for the signal to go through or around. 4Super clear reception Extremely clear, works great to communicate between our main house and our little house on the river. We do not get cell phone reception except with a booster in our main house so it works great to communicate between the houses. Can not use wireless phones as the distance between the houses is too great and the house down by the river does not have phone lines going to it, so this solves the problem on talking between the two houses. 5Great alternative to a regular intercom I needed a way for us to communicate between the house and workshop which is about 50 feet away (we don't always have our cell phones). I looked at more traditional intercoms that use AC power lines to transmit, but they seemed to get uniformly bad reviews. These were easy to set up and use, and controls are pretty simple:- Volume/power knob- PTT (push to talk) button that you hold down while talking - this is the only control you'll need to use most of the time- MODE and arrow buttons to change channel, sub-channel, and other settings- CALL button that makes the other units beep to get attention (using this is optional)- MON button that lets you hear if anyone else is transmitting on the current channel (this doesn't "listen in" on other units, instead you'll hear if anyone is transmitting on any sub-channels on your channel - all I get is static. This function doesn't seem very useful, since the unit already lets you hear anyone on *your* channel and sub-channel without pressing anything)For the units to intercommunicate, all units must be set to the same channel and sub-channel (there are 5 channels and each channel has 38 sub-channels). To prevent accidentally changing the channel and sub-channel, you can easily lock those in by holding down the MODE button for a few seconds (and do the same to unlock again).Sound quality is not crystal clear but certainly acceptable, and the volume can be cranked high enough so that I can hear the unit from anywhere in the house. The units seem well made except the antenna is very loose where it swivels; if you point it straight up, just accidentally brushing against it can make it flop over. The only other (very minor) complaint I have is that the external AC adapter plug is bigger and heavier than most similar adapters.P.S. To reduce the chance of interference, it's probably best to avoid channels 4 and 5, since those are "blue dot" and "green dot" frequencies used by some businesses. 5The signal could not penetrate the metal building so after calling the factory they recommend the antenna to be moved to the out I purchased this Dakota Alert M538-BS MURS Base Station as an extra base station to go along withthe Dakota Kit (1) MAPS and (1) M538-BS that already had one base station with it. I put this in myshop so when the device triggered on the driveway I could hear in my shop and at the house. What I did find that may be helpful to some my shop is a metal Quonset hut roughly 3000 feet awayfrom the driveway triggering device. The signal could not penetrate the metal building soafter calling the factory they recommend the antenna to be moved to the outside which I did by addingan 50 foot of 50 ohm cable with the right BNC connectors and coupling. At first it did not work I calledthe factory they made sure I had the right cable so I redid the ends installed it again it did not work again. So I looked at how I routed the cable and saw that I had gone over the top of a fluorescent light in the shopI rerouted the cable away from the magnetic field from the fluorescent light transformer and it workedwithout any issues after that even though the cable was shielded the transformers magnetic fieldinterfered with the incoming signal . I also added that the Dakota alert chime device which is easier tohear for me. I recommend this product. 5Awesome We live on a farm and this replaces a unit we had that operated on the FMRS channels that finally died. Use from the horse barn to the kitchen and it is perfectly clear at all times. The barn is about 1/2 mile distant, although there are just 5 main channels there are in fact 30 something sub channels if you find the others busy or noisy. Never had to do that at all. The radio system it uses is called MURS and seems like it's not used very much and thus never anyone around. Wish I would have had it several years ago. I have a 2 meter ham radio that will operate on the same freqs. did a test driving down the road and I could talk to the kitchen 3 miles distant.Best invention since "Ice Cream." 5Happy camper. I purchased two of these units to go with a Dakota wireless motion detecting transmitter. I also purchased the handheld receiver.I use this setup to monitor my apartment complex pool at night because I have had problems with people jumping the fence (trespassing) to "have fun" after hours.I am hard of hearing and also use headphones in the evening for online gaming/shooting so I picked up a couple of the Midland 18-STR strobe lights and they work perfectly with these units... just snip the plug off the end of the strobe light cable, strip the wire ends, and hook up to this base's connectors. I am VERY happy with this setup.I, like others, had a problem with the antennas being VERY floppy. They would fall over at the slightest movement. I contacted Dakota about this and they were VERY responsive and sent me two new tighter antennas. Got them in 3 days. Because I didn't know how fast I would get the promised antennas, I used some liquid electrical tape on the antenna's twist connector to keep them from flopping over. I will keep the new antennae as backups.Customer service is superb. However I did knock off one star because of the antenna issue and because of the weight and size of the power supply cube that takes up a ton of power strip space. I also would have liked to see this base have a switch on it that would keep the contact for the strobe closed to run it continuously when tripped, so it would flash and keep flashing until I came in the room and reset it. It only flashes while the base gives it's three "Alert zone one" announcements. That Midland strobe is a real attention getter and I highly recommend it for this base radio. 4Dakota 538 base station. I have 3 of these base stations, and one hand held unit. They far exceededmy expectations. In my other house, my phone system was my intercom, but because of wiring issues in this new house, my phone system couldn't be wired without having to make a mess of my dry walls. I miss my phone intercom, however, this is as close as I'm going to get, now, with that said, having the hand held unit is _really nice because if I'm out in my garage, or in my shed which is about 75 feet away from my house I can still talk to my wife without having to walk back to the house or if I'm in the basement and she's on the second floor I don't have to yell like a madman. :-) All 4 units are as clear as a bell too. I _love these babies! If i had any complaints at all, it would be that the antennas on the base stations aren't real tight when you move the antenna from front to back, moving it from side to side is ok, and, like I said, in all honesty, at least to me, this is truly no big deal. Should you decide to purchase these base stations, one thing you should know is, that the AC adaptor is quite heavy so, if you have an electrical outlet that is not tight and plugs fall out easily, be warned, the adaptor will fall right out of the outlet in an instant. I hope this helped you, and I think you will be quite happy with your purchase of this system. Thanks so much for reading, and have a great rest of your summer ok? 5Great Product My wife uses this product to communicate with her mother who is a diabetic. Her mothers house is about 350 feet from our house and the communication isclear as a bell without any interference.Just remember both units have to be on the same channel and mode and would suggestusing a surge protector if used in an older house.I had to send back one of the units but customer service was really goodand a replacement was sent in a reasonable amount of time. I would definitelyrecommend this product. We have been using this product for nearly a year and have not had any troublewith the two units. 5Can be left on 24 hours What a great deal. I bought 3 of these and 2 of their portable radios. I am on my 3rd month of usage. Much better than any GMRS I have ever found. You can leave them on all the time plus they have a switch if the power goes out you can use battery power from the built in battery compartment to power them. Medium range, but long enough to cover my needs anywhere on my property with privacy channels. The operate far away from the GMRS radio frequency so fewer people using them. 5
