Customer Reviews

O.k but general shop or carpentry use only. As with most Lufkins this is just a plain tape, tape itself is fine. Casing is no different to American or Australian Lufkins I used in 70's and 80's which is a little crappy will suit general use. I purchased for shop hack and not to be thrown around. Forget the one hand locking on this it's impossible, one hand return is great but who wants to slam a tap back destroying innards. 1 point for one hand locking as it's very poor. 3I like itI mainly needed a cheap but decent replacement tape measure for regular usage (non-handyman, carpenter, etc stuff) and so far this does the job. I used to use a old but still handy metal Stanley PowerLock, Stanley is all I know but this isn't bad. Like most other tapes it will go limp, this one for me does so at around 9-10FT but if used on the ground its fine. The casing is plastic but feels strong enough to survive falls on hard surfaces and it has a belt clip. The lock also works fine with just one hand and I'm not a strong woman so thats a plus. What I really like is that the numbers are vertical instead of horizontal like many others as its much easy/quicker to read. The tape isn't scratch resistant (I tested) but the coating creates a good shield for average wear. For the price its a great tape measure. If you're a contractor or in some such profession I think this would be a decent cheap measure for on the go but you may want to opt for a metal casing or other features. For the average person just wanting to measure without a ruler, its pretty great.5A tape measure held back by its flimsy end So to start i use this tape measure daily but only a few times per day to do simple <5' measurements. I have been using it for the past 6 months or so. I have also owned a great range of tape measures from different brands but never anything less than 10'.Pros: The case is durable, ive dropped it a number of times and the plastic has not cracked. The size is excellent fits within your hand really nice and it is quite light. The hold lock works excellent, never slips.Cons: Occasionally the reeling in spring will not retract the tape and i will have to continually pull it back and forth before it retracts, not too big a deal The biggest issue is the end has bent and even though it is metal i am unable to bend it back, it is not kinked in a way it is more curved so that it is no longer straight. This becomes extremely annoying when i need to hook the end on to something to pull the tape towards me or when i measure vertical and it makes it tough to have an accurate measurement. This end flimsiness would keep me from recommending this tape despite its price unless you're doing very occasional measurements. 2Good, but not for gritty environments. They're fine, packaging is a nightmare. The retract spring is weak, I've owned several other lufkins and the whole brand is like that. It's nice if you work with metal and are inside because then you don't have that million mile an hour retract. If you work with wood or in dirt though... One grain of sand or woodchip inside the housing and your screwed, they'll never retract properly again.3I like but not the 6 This is a nice tape measure. Slides well, retracts well, and has a clip for your belt. The best feature of it is the fractions on one side and the decimals on the other that s very convenient. The only thing I don t like about it is that in a recent project, I had to measure 6 inches several times. The number 6 has a line under it to help you distinguish it from a 9 . But I kept confusing the line under the 6 for the 6 inch line. The line under the 6 is at about 6 1/4 inches. I caught myself marking 6 inches at the wrong line several times and corrected my measurement, but I personally found this marking to be confusing and therefore mistake-prone for me. Regardless of that one drawback, I do recommend this tape measure. It s a good price and works well.If my review was helpful, please let Amazon know by clicking helpful . Thanks!5Great item at a good price but impossible to open! This tape measures looks very well made and study especially because it was under $6.00. However, a big minus is the difficulty of getting the damn thing out of its package. It seems to be strongly attached in the back and imcrying trying to get it free Of its hard plastic wrapping, it s RIDICULOUS and the manufacturer should rethink this insane idea. Perhaps it s a security device for storesbut I m an elderly disabled women and I need help.5BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU TRY TO OPEN THE PACKAGING!!!!!!I just received this tape measure about 20 minutes ago it took me AT LEAST 10 MINUTES TO GET IT OUT OF THE PACKAGING. The plastic packaging was very thick and sharp as I had to carefully cut it open, I could have easily cut my fingers. It is extremely heavy which I wasnt expecting either. Apart from that I'm sure it will do the jobs needed. The packaging needs to be redone and some one could easily cut themselves. I don't normally write reviews but felt the need to do so.3Great Time Saving Measuring Tape! We're a Staging and Interior Decorating Company and we hang alot of art and place furniture and accessories. These measuring tapes are amazing. Finding the center of a wall to hang art or place a sofa or rug is so simple. Our team loves them. Whenever you need to constantly find the center of an item, this is the measuring tape you need 5Clear markingsAs i age I am having issues with presbyopia which we will all have to deal with. It's a fact of life kids. Having clear easy to read numbers makes my shop and field measurements so much easier and as anyone who works on construction sites knows the lighting is not always that great.5Great toolkit addition Just needed an inexpensive tape measure to keep in my beginner's toolbox. It feels durable and heavy although I won't be using it daily. Great to have around the house, one of those things you never know you needed. 5perfect for those that say.. 1 inch + 3 lines I absolutely love this ruler. it has been a life savor for me. I get stuck on reading rulers and this has taken all the pressure and fear of me cutting fabric wrong! I highly recommend it. This ruler is heavy, great end for latching onto for measuring, yet small enough to carry with you. My only regret is that I didn't find it sooner!! 5I bought to replace Stanley silver's been using since 1980"sI bought to replace Stanley silver's been using since 1980"s . I find the two types measurements a pain in the Butt , if you work either with metric or inch is not big deal ,what is that you can only measure one way for the scale using this be okay for say shop setting but when you are restoring /rehabbing homes it is a need to flip a tape to read r-to L or L to R is paramount this makes it hard to work with both measurements when you go to a saw or other items .Not the fault of the company just not good for framing work but great for a shop work .also the round design make it a hard read when up in rafters and such flat tape works better .so far good tape for money would buy again for shop work not framing style work3Extremely Frustrating To Get Out Of The PackageI got four of these since I work in maintenance and we needed a couple tape measures. Getting the tape out of the package was very difficult and it took me two tapes to figure out the best way to do it. You have to take a knife and open the back by cutting along the punched out lines (the punched out dotted lines won't open - they don't give enough), pry the cardboard away with a screwdriver and tear it off, then use the screwdriver to lift up on the metal belt clip enough that it clears the plastic dimple they have to catch the clip. What a pain! And a real safety hazard if you try to open it with just a knife or some sharp object. The tape measure itself works fine once you finally extract it from the grip of death that the packaging has on it. I get to repair and work on some stupidly designed items in my line of work, but this package must have been designed by Lufkin's Department of Sales Prevention. There are plenty of equally good tape measures out there that are sanely packaged - I'd get one of them.2Fits in my pocket and has a clip too. I bought one of these at the local hardware store about two years ago. I like is so much that I wanted to have one in my work truck, but my hardware store doesn't carry it any more. So I paid extra to buy it from Amazon, the price was about the same, but when you add the shipping, well. I buy these tape measures for the bright orange color, I can find it when I need it. But the small size is handy too. I love my 30' x 1" stiff blade tape measures, but they don't fit in the pocket of my dress-bib-overalls. The blade on this little Lufkin will extend about 42", maybe a little more, before it flops over, which is fine when I'm working at my table saw, radial arm saw or drill press. I've had 1" blades that would extend more than 8' and are great to use when you need it. I know a little bit about tape measures, I entered the carpenters apprenticeship way back in 1968, in those days about half the guys use Lufkin and the other half used Stanley tape measures. Lufkin has been around a long time. 5Nice tape for the priceShort version: great tape for the price, different labeling takes getting used to (but I like it), strong retractionLong version:I needed an extra tape measure around, but didn't want to spend much ($10 or less) since this isn't going to be my primary tape. I've had multiple tapes over the years; Stanley power tapes, a self locking Kobolt, couple of free "horror freight", a tiny Lufkin that I think is 40+ years old... The latter is what prompted me to check Lufkin again. These are all still going strong, except the horror freight (tape ends bent up, but they still work for the most part) and a Stanley I accidentally cut with a miter saw.First, let's get something straight: this is not going to compare to a more expensive tape. Not sure what some of you are expecting. This has a plastic shell, and feels a little cheap - NOT poor quality cheap, but it feels like a sub $10 tape. It's not a bad thing, you get what you pay for. That said, it has already survived a few falls from 6'-8' onto concrete and does not look or feel any worse for the wear. I have a Stanley that is plastic cased, and don't feel that it is inferior as a tape in general - less durable than metal, but more solid than this one.The retraction is strong - surprisingly strong. Hopefully that holds up. This is nice, but it also leads me to the next con: there is no "bumper" for the tape to strike against when it retracts. Usually this means that eventually the end will bend out of shape, lose accuracy, and stop hooking onto things. More expensive tapes have a spring loaded bumper for the end of the tape to strike against to prevent this. The layout of the numbers on the tape are one of the things that drew me to this tape. I do like it, but it takes a little getting used to after using "conventional" tape marking layout all these years.Tape lock works great. There are some reviews griping about it, but this one works very well. Solid engagement, does not slip. The packaging: I can't believe people are griping about the packaging. Seriously, if you can't get the $!#%ing thing out of the package, you probably have no business using it. I'll give the review from the older woman a pass on this statement. The packaging on this isn't any worse than any other plastic tool package, so build a bridge and get over it. Oh wait, you can't, because you can't get the tape out of the packaging...4Easy to read tape. Numbers are never upside down.Very nice tape measure. Extends smoothly and easily. Locks solidly. Retracts with smooth power.I particularly like the labeling on the tape. It is indeed easy to read. With the numbers set sideways to the tape you get the correct measurement whether pulling from the left or from the right. The numbers are never upside down. The emphasis is on inches but the feet-and-inches markings are just enough.5Fine--and Cheap! This does exactly what you'd expect it to do at half (or less) price compared to other brands. The lock that holds the tape measure in place feels a little iffy and doesn't go down as far as you'd expect, but when you get used to it it works fine. 4
