Customer Reviews

It works just as advertised! I live in an isolated rural community and needed a long range 850 nm Illuminator for my outside security cameras. Specifically, I needed a 75 foot range, which is a little beyond the range of cheap seven or eight IR LED versions. So, I ordered and installed the CMVision IR3 power IR LED Illuminator. It works perfectly! Please note, it does NOT come with a power supply and needs 12vdc at about 250 mA. It is weatherproof with a heavy duty metal case and IR passing clear cover. The clear cover contains three IR light scattering spots over each of the three LEDs that evenly scatter the IR light over the 80 degree path. The LEDs are automatically switched on/off as needed by a photocell. The product was exactly as advertised by CMVision, I trust them and will do business again with them. They've proven to be honest, fast, professional and reliable.Should there be any question about your IP Camera working with this 850 nm IR illuminator, test your camera using an IR TV remote control (most TV remotes use 850 nm IR). If your camera can 'see' your remote control LED when you press one of its buttons--this illuminator will work. 5The CMVision IR3 works! I have ordered more for every camera I have. WOW! This purchase has been tough for me for the obvious reason I risked buying this camera, I have been looking for a decent 'wide angle' camera that is 'very' cost effective. I had already purchased one of the $10-$15 generic 48ir pieces that you can find on Amazon and was very dissapointed. I knew the thing was cheap, but it doesn't even seam to work. The CMVision IR3 was amazing the second I plugged it in, so much so that I've already ordered more to install with every camera in my system. I will try to update after a few months to give light on its longevity, but for it coming and trying it right out of the box I am very impressed and happy with this product. See the pictures and please excuse our kids messy garage :) I will work on aiming the camera better when i actually install it, this picture was taken with me stretched above my head and holding it in my hand near the camera and holding my smartphone in the other hand to see the dvr feed.As far as range is concerned, I'm not. The cameras I am worried about are only looking about 20ft out max, and the far wall in these pictures is about 25ft. So these will work very well for the areas I am recording. 5Three months later, and I am still impressed! I have had this Infra-red illuminator plugged in (indoors) for the past three months, and I must say that I am impressed. The day-night sensor switch is dramatically fast when you cover the sensor with your finger to simulate darkness, and it quickly turns the light off when you remove your finger. This is far better than keeping the IR's lit 24/7. The housing is made of painted metal and the front panel is glass, and not plastic. The glass gets warm after the lights have been on for a few hours, but not dangerously hot. I agree with another reviewer who suggested coating the mounting screws and the adjusting screws with a silicone sealant to preclude them from rusting, and to add silicone sealant to the lens edge to keep out moisture. Another option would be to replace these plain steel screws with stainless steel screws from your favorite hardware store. Overall I am quite happy with this purchase. Like others have mentioned, the dispersion angle appears to be narrower than I had hoped for, but definitely acceptable for the price. 5Great for Security Cameras! I got this to help with night vision on my DCS-2330L. The picture was almost completely black before adding this light. This LED array made a huge difference. See the photos for before and after shots 5Totally inadequate.. forget this device... I received mine just two days ago, and installed it immediately. Much to my disappointment, I was not able to achieved anything NEAR what is described as the illumination capabilities might be. Range was under 10 ft. (at best) and 'wide-angle' would most definitely not describe the small illuminated 'circle' I witnessed on my security camera. And this was achieved only by placing a large section of 'sheetrock' (gypsum board) directly in the path of the illuminator and the camera. The IR LEDs on the camera itself were at least eight times brighter (my estimate) than this might hope to be under the best of considerations. Either it was 'malfunctioning' "out-of-the box" (which didn't appear to be the case since the 'glow' from the LEDs was apparent when seen in visible light), or the 'wishful' IR illumination was just that - a wish. When pointed nearly directly at the camera, it displayed a 'fuzzy' globe of IR energy, but totally inadequate for any sort of 'illumination' beyond just few, very minimal, feet. It is on its way back to Amazon as I write this... Forget about this thing... a cigarette lighter would provide more IR energy for a longer distance.. 2Internal LEDs fail. Optional repair advice. I would NOT recommend these units at all.I have four of these, and have found the LEDs in each to be very unreliable. In three of my four units, I've had failure of one of the on-board LEDs.The only good thing I can say, is that when/if they work, the output is good.. provided your camera is sensitive to the IR light. For most people, you can stop here and look for a better quality product. For those handy with electronics, and willing to crack the seal on these instead of bothering to return...Disassembly is easy... cut the sticker and unscrew the front ring & lens. Inside, there are three IR LEDs each under a cheap plastic lens that snaps on/off easily. The three LEDs are connected in series across the 12v supply. Each is soldered onto the metal-clad PCB and have thermal paste under each for heat transfer to the PCB.What has happened in mine, one of the LEDs loses connection internally, and since they're in series, all 3 go out. Pushing on the small domed soft covering of the LED itself from one side will momentarily bring it back to life. I sacrificed one unit to repair the other 3 by de-soldering the IR LEDs from a working one, and replacing the bad ones. 2Good Product--Until it Fails... I had high initial hopes for this illuminator when I purchased it, but within one-year, one of the LEDs failed. It still put out enough light for my needs, so I figured that it was just bad luck that I got a bad LED... When the other two LEDs failed during the following year, I figured I paid good money for a bad product. I have seen many positive reviews, and wish I could give the same praise. However, I don't know how long the other reviewers had their product. If I'd given my review after 4 to 6 months, it would have earned 5 stars. However, with one LED failing after the other, I felt I had to at least give an honest, time-tested account of their overall quality and durability (or lack thereof). 2Only good for a narrow range of applications Can't recommend this for anything but a very narrow field of view application. This illuminator is not nearly as wide as 60-80 degrees. It definitely creates a flashlight zone of coverage. If I could describe the recordings of me walking in the back yard, it's like a pitch black scene with a flashlight aimed across the yard. When I walked in the path of the illuminator, it looked like a ghost (overexposed) was walking by. Pretty useless. After seeing this and doing some more research, I ended up buying another illuminator for $250, which had a nice diffusion of light across a 120 degree arc. You know how photographers say a cloudy day is best for taking pictures? Well that is exactly what the expensive IR illuminators are like. They spread the light uniformly, so you don't get over-exposed and under-exposed areas of the image. 2great distance, great value I'm using the Dahua HFW2100 and it has decent distance with it's own IR lights. something like 20m (diagonally across ~4 parking spaces and just across the road behind it). Since we're on a rural driveway I wanted to light up the next section of road before you get to the spaces in case someone scouts out the cars from there. Running electric power out there isn't desireable (deeper trenches, requires casings). That's why I started out with a POE camera to begin with :)I prefer ethernet to wifi for things like this so set up the camera with a WS-POE-8-48v60w 8 port "dumb" POE injector. I make my own cables so I bought a 500yd spool of indoor/outdoor cat5e cable. the injector and spool let me easily add more cameras. it's easier to do another run of ethernet cable someplace than deal with 120v or outlets. so far so good.Even though an IR flood doesn't require network connectivity, running POE 6" deep is a lot easier. I wish they made some of these lights with POE power since a lot of them are right in that voltage range. A solar powered one would be even better (hint hint). I decided to make my own POE solution.I purchased a TP-LINK TL-POE10R which is a bit of overkill. It has a switch for 5v/9v/12v POE and supports gigabit ethernet pass through should I want to use it later for a remote Wifi switch (should this experiment fail ;). I powered that up on the 12v setting and measured it with a voltmeter. It seemed steady and didn't overpower the power cord. I was using my long cat5e cable because I wanted to know the power on the actual run, not a 1m short cable.Ran the long cable, hooked up the splitter, and plugged this IR flood with the included male-male connector (which fits both ends btw). Wham! it about doubled the distance of the camera :) It could probably go a bit farther but I'm balancing field of view and areas I want clearly visible. Stuff out 80m might be visible but not enough to kick off the motion detection. The IR's are much more visible to the naked eye but I can see a lot further on my end. There are notable downsides. The splitter setup is *not* weatherproof. I was going to jury rig something but in the end, placing the injector under a small shed roof and mounting the IR light on the outside corner provided the best field of view anyway. The splitter is small but combined with the cable connections, if you try this, make sure you have a weather-safe spot. If water shorts that out, the injector will probably fry itself pretty quickly. Since it's not directly connected to my switch (POE-wise) I'm not as worried. Live and learn. The second downside is that I have to hope the splitter will keep the power fairly clean. The light is a great value but won't last long if the power isn't about right. I'll update this review if it's still doing well after a couple months. I'm hoping using a select-voltage splitter will keep things fairly in line. I'm certainly up for recommendations :) I figured this might be an option for others that want to try setting up a POE flood without too much expense. 5I'm pretty happy with this purchase I'm pretty happy with this purchase. I did not install these until my cameras had been up for a couple of weeks. Those cameras had their own LED illuminators which lit the area really well BUT attracted flying bugs, which kept tripping motion detection recording.I installed these illuminators several feet rearward of the cameras (and disabled the cameras' own LED illuminators) and that has almost entirely eliminated the attracted flying bug motion detection problem.I powered each CMVision illuminator with the optional CMVision power supply that has a long enough cord and thicker insulation for outside use ("CMVision UL Listed Regulated Power Adapter, 12VDC, 1Amp for Camera, LED Light, IR Illuminator").BTW, because this illuminator throws the light far rather than wide you will need to spend a little more time adjusting its angle to get the right coverage for your camera's view. 4
