This camera is amazing for its size.Amazing camera. I'm a professional photographer and I am extremely impressed with the picture quality. I also love all the manual controls and the ease-of-use. I shoot weddings on a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon 6D. In a pinch I could easily use this camera if I needed to.The picture I have attached is a 15 second exposure with my kids running around with solar lights. This shot is un-edited and was shot in raw. The only thing I did with the picture was transfer it via Wi-Fi to my cell phone using the Canon picture app.5Impressive follow-up to the G7XI want to first discuss the autofocus. This camera DOES NOT use dual pixel AF or any other phase detect AF system in it. Manage your autofocus expectations accordingly. Especially in low light and in video. However, it does have a noticeable improvement in speed over its predecessor and for most situations it's fine.What this camera excels at, just like its predecessor, is stills. It has excellent low and mid ISO image quality. I prefer the Fine Detail setting as my picture style as it provide excellent sharpness and punchy, great-looking colors by default. But there are a number of other picture styles to suit your tastes. I also love that this camera now has in camera raw processing, which can be useful.It seems also like Canon has quietly made some improvements to the lens because it seems a bit sharper than the one on the G7X even though they are supposed to be the same.Video quality is also excellent and quite sharp. The autofocus is pretty good but because it's contrast detect, you will see a little bit of back and forth motion with the focus from time but otherwise it's not bad. Great for casual uses such as vlogging.The camera controls are well laid-out. I like the chunkier grip and that the exposure comp dial has better feedback to it. The one its predecessor could be a little hard to turn (but kudos to Canon for at least including one - Sony RX100 has no such dial on top). The LCD is bright and clear and also is more flexible, which means it's a lot easier to compose on in bright sunlight. Battery life is not stellar but once again, this also an improvement over the original G7X. It should last you a day of shooting.Complaints? I think the major one is, and this seems to be an issue on both the G7X and the RX100 series cameras, is that dust can easily get inside the lens. Even though the camera has a built-in automatic lens cap, it does a poor job at keeping dust and other particles out. I would recommend getting a secondary lens cap which can run anywhere from $5-$15 at the big NYC camera retailers or here on Amazon. I also think the noise reduction in the JPEGS is a little heavy-handed by default. You should turn this down to low.But overall, a great enthusiast compact camera. The 1" Sony sensor inside is still relatively small compared to APSC rebels or mirrorless but it punches above its weight in image quality. If you really don't see yourself going much beyond the kit lens if you were to buy a Rebel, this could be a great alternative. It takes great photos and video, has improved (but not perfect) AF and battery life over the original, and it comfortable to shoot with.5Don t Buy This CameraThis camera was such a let down, and I m legitimately mystified by how high of a rating it has. The camera has a hard time producing crystal focused images in anything other than bright light or with flash, whether using manual of auto settings. The color rendition was mediocre. And worst of all, the automatic lens cover started to glitch after first day of use, needing a push to fully open or close. Didn t feel like I took a single worthwhile image with this camera. I was really excited to add something this compact and powerful to my collection. I ll have to keep looking.1Expensive but worth it. Wifi problematic.This camera is the bomb!!! Unlike some posting here, I am by no means a professional photographer. I own 3 canon point & shoot type cameras & this is far far away the best! The automatic shooting modes give at best mediocre results, in my humble opinion. But by just branching out slightly into the aperture modes, even a hobbyist photographer with mediocre ability like me can with this camera even in lowish lighting conditions achieve controlled, even somewhat artistic results as I found playing with it on day #2 with no flash and no tripod. Incredible picture quality. There is one silly nit running through all the canon cameras of which the buyer should be aware. It appears impossible to use the vaunted wifi capability with windows 10. I have spent hours trying to make it work, then a google search showed there are crowds out there facing the same frustration. So if you think you'll take pictures and beam them to your win10 OS computer, look for another camera. If you're content to just shuffle the card out & read it or do something else and will settle for a terrific compact point & shoot camera that can really almost function as a DSLR replacement, this is the camera to buy. It's expensive, but worth every penny!5Last only one year, worst customer service, bait and switch tactic.The worst investment ever. I owned this camera for a bit over a year, and used it lightly on birthday parties or travel. The lcd display just died on me suddenly when taking picture. I also had broken zoom button. No wonder Canon only gives 1 year warranty on this one because it wont last longer. Add to the insult is that bait and switch tactis from canon service. We asked if it is possible if the camera covered under warranty since it has only been a month out of warranty period. The person asked us to send the camera as there might be a grace period. They received the camera and want 300 for fixing the issues and states that there is no such grace period. It cost me 20 dolar to send the camera to them and they want to charge me also for returning to us due to their bait and switch tactic. I like picture quality but that can be had with ither camera too such as sony rx, anyway seriously nothing special with this camera compare to other is price range. Well maybe the only special is that it will last 1 year.1The perfect YouTube camera!This camera is simply amazing! I've been shooting professionally for several years and have used about every type of camera under the sun. I recently gave up the professional side of photography and sold my DSLR and went to this little guy for various reasons. I run a YouTube channel and needed something that would be compact and easy to use with good quality video/photos. I backpack a lot and this was the right choice for that.The 1" sensor that Canon is using may not be the highest quality sensor that you can buy, and is no where near the quality that a full frame or even APS-C sensor provides, but for what the 1" sensor is capable of producing, it awesome. Canon has always made high quality gear that performs well on the back end. I've always been happy with the images that come from it, and the video is even better. I publish 8-10 videos a month on my youtube channel and am always impressed by how the video looks. The color balance is smooth and rarely needs correction post edit. I love too that I can shoot 24 frames per second instead of being forced to 30 frames. Just overall the video aspect of this camera is great!I am also happy with the menu and settings. They aren't complicated and getting the settings you want is easy to do. The manual settings are fairly easy to control as well. I've done some night shots of the stars with this and it did a nice job of having very little noise given the smaller sensor. I can do almost everything I could do with my DSLR with this Canon. It's really just a great camera!5I really like this camera. It's a bit expensive for a Point & Shoot, but it competes well with low- to medium end dSLR cameras.I delayed writing this review for 4 months, just to be sure my opinion doesn't change. It hasn't, I really like this camera! It takes great quality pictures. It has a zoom lens at a great range (24mm - 105mm), it has all of the automatic features you could ask for (focus, aperture, film speed, shutter speed). Or, you can select manual shutter speed or aperture and the camera will set everything else. Or, you can select all-manual, if you want to set everything yourself. It has a high pixel count (24 megapixel), and it can even be set to shoot in RAW so you can do lots of darkroom magic, if you want.I shot with a manual SLR (a Canon FTb) from the early 70's to the late 90's, then I lost interest. I had purchased a 35mm lens and a 135mm lens to compliment the 50mm supplied with the SLR. I also had lots of peripherals; flashes, macro tubes, remote releases, yada, yada, yada. I felt like a pack mule every time I left the house. I found out a few things about a manual SLR: they're heavy; I took 80% of my pictures with the stock 50mm lens; and the picture quality was only good when I had plenty of time to set up the shot. Mostly, the pictures I got were just on the edge of over- or under-exposed, and were often barely in focus.So, when I decided to get back into photography, I decided to buy a new camera and I wanted that camera to offer: point and shoot for simplest use; good quality pictures so it had to offer a high megapixel rating; a zoom lens that was about the range of my old manual lenses; and light weight so it would be easy to carry around all day.This camera hit all of these requirements and at a reasonable price. The pictures I'm getting with this point and shoot are far superior to those I got from my old SLR. I just couldn't be happier, though I will admit that a modern dSLR will probably also show a similarly dramatic improvement over the old manual SLR's, but at a much higher price.Some cautions:1) Buy a high speed memory card, at least 90 MB/sec. Dumping 30 MB of a picture into a memory card takes time, so a fast memory card is a must to get the fastest possible shot rate.2) Look into the Lensmate filter adapter. This device enables you to attach a UV filter to protect the zoom lens from dirt and water.3) Buy a spare battery, preferably a Canon (a bit expensive, but worth it). Digital cameras live and die by their batteries, so it makes sense to have a good quality spare when you're out for extended shooting.4) Buy a decent strap, the wrist strap supplied with the camera really isn't enough. Look at the Peak Design Camera Leash; rugged, flexible, and easy to remove when storing the camera.If you want the ability to change out lenses, this camera is not for you. But, if you want to take lots of great pictures easily and without the hassle of lugging a lot of equipment around, look into this camera!5One Cool Small CameraLet me say from the start, I really like Canon. This is my 4th Canon camera and I've always enjoyed how easy they are to use and how great the photos and video is. I was looking for something small to carry with me, to VLOG, but to also just have something that was quicker to use than my Canon 70D. I've researched this camera A LOT and I only heard great things. Plus, it seems to be the camera most VLOGGERS use. So I ordered it and LOVE it. So simple to use and the quality is amazing. The only negative (not enough to give fewer stars) is the lack of an external mic adaptor. Other than that, I highly recommend it!5A Fantastic Still Camera with Pretty Good VideoI bought this camera as an alternative to my DSLR gear and to get some good video of my daughters. This camera does not disappoint. The photos are excellent, it is easy to use, and is really small and light.The pros:- The size! It is a little bigger than pocket size, but fits great in a purse and definitely in cargo short pockets- Focus is quick and accurate (unless your subject is a 4yo that moves faster than a running back)- Picture quality is excellent for the sensor size (or for any camera really)- Battery life is reasonable (and they don't take forever to charge)- The image stabilization saved my bacon a time or two. Not the 4 stops you see on a $2k lens, but still pretty good- having a dial for exposure compensation at thumb level is great- Having full manual mode as well as the semi-auto modes (Av, Tv) is great for those of us that want that level of control- The Wi-Fi works well and the mobile app (on Android at least) works great- Raw files!- Video is great (even if not 4K)Cons:- It might be small, but the metal body makes it a little on the heavy side- There is only one fully auto mode - no "Sports", "Landscape", or "Portrait" modes- High speed continuous mode in Raw+JPEG fills the buffer in a hurry (I know, a bit nitpicky)- If you put the strap on the right side (from the rear) you will probably hit the Wi-Fi button when putting the camera in your pocket or a snug case. That drains the battery in a hurry.- Audio quality is, well, not very good. The microphone is in a spot easily covered or blocked by a hand holding the camera.All in all, I am very happy with the purchase. My wife also appreciates that we own a camera that doesn't weigh a few pounds or require a degree in rocket surgery to use. Nearly a Complete DSLR ReplacementI am a hobby shooter, but prefer quality and do a lot of YouTube videos. For background, I've had a variety of different camcorders, point-and-shoots, and DSLRs: Sony RX100 III, Nikon D5300, D3200, Canon Vixia lower end series, Go Pro Silver 4, three-axis gimbals, etc etc. After having tried out all of these cameras over the last 4-5 years, the Canon G7X Mark II is the closest thing I've seen to the total package. It's lightweight and ultra-portable -- small enough to fit in your jeans pocket -- but packs a tremendous punch, and is loaded with features.The f1.8 aperture is very sharp at 24MM, though I find that the camera likes to default to f/2, and when shooting manual I need to make a slight adjustment if I want the 1.8. Autofocus is fantastic; virtually seamless in most settings. In low light it takes a second. I also found when trying to manually focus two objects about 2 feet apart on a table (a cup and a candle) that it struggled to focus on the foreground item (hunting) until I corrected by hand.As far as the image quality goes on this guy, it's tremendous, and if you spend some time learning how to use it, it will replicate a Nikon 5xxx or Canon t series very well, without the bother of a bunch of different lenses. Night shooting is great, and it's very easy to do timelapses and get quality images of the night sky.The 24-100mm (35mm equivalent) zoom range is fantastic, and you really don't notice the camera stopping down from 1.8 to 2.8 across the zoom. The digital zoom (beyond the 4.2 optical) is also fairly usable for at least the first little bit, though at full digital zoom it is very grainy.Noise comes in around 1600 ISO, but you can adjust some other settings to deal with that; really you're probably good for most everything until around 2000 ISO.Other Pros:- Fantastic touch screen that's very responsive. I haven't owned many past cameras that use a touch screen for so many settings, but this guy is able to deal with most everything right on the screen.- The swivel screen is nice, and I've found myself using the downward tilt for high shots more than I expected.- Very simple wifi connection to your phone or computer makes getting shots on instagram (or wherever) a breeze.- Though others have complained about hearing the autofocus sound during video recording, I have not heard it yet. Unless you're in dead silence and need the sound off the camera, I don't think it'd ever be a problem.- An incredible amount of presets for multiple shooting situations make it so the novice will not need to fiddle with manual settings much (if ever).- The low light performance on this camera is absurdly good. I'm frankly not sure how they do it. I was sitting in a chair in my living room in what was nearly pitch black, and the camera was able to light the shot to the point that it looked like the room was fully lit. No noise. It's bizarre (and awesome!) how good this thing shoots in low light.- The weight. So much power in a package you can bring with you just about anywhere.- Unlike the first edition, with the Mark II you can shoot in the "film quality" 24p, which I tend to enjoy.Other Cons:- The bokeh is good on this camera for the most part, getting very high quality bokeh/background blur if your foreground and background images are 6 or more feet apart. If you're trying to distinguish between two items closer together, it still works well until about 2 feet apart, but the bokeh is not as creamy or DSLR quality. Within 2 feet, it's hit-or-miss.- The battery is simply not capable of supporting what this camera can do. They probably needed a battery twice its size, so buy at least one extra battery.- I might be doing something wrong, but have so far only been able to set the lens ring to adjust aperture or shutter speed. It will not adjust zoom or manual focus as I thought I'd be able to do.- The touchscreen manual focus is nice, but trying to adjust it without touch focusing is very cumbersome.- No 4K, but I don't find that to be a huge negative honestly.---Overall, this thing is a beast, and with just a few more tweaks could probably become a full DSLR replacement for just about everyone except full-time professional photographers. If you're doing anything up to and including serious, routine videography, this thing has horsepower and built-in capabilities to do the job. I'll be selling my NIkon D5300 and accompanying lenses and using this as a full-time shooter for a while. I've yet to find any deal-breaking limitation.Finally, I bought this off Amazon, because it seems to be backordered everywhere. If you have an eBay account, I got mine from "Red Tag Camera", who shipped and delivered to me in two days. They still had six in stock as of Tuesday, so you might want to check there if you want one soon.4
