Customer Reviews

Very uncomfortable for long periods of time, and sound quality is lacking I take a lot of long train and bus trips, and I'm just enough of a misanthrope to get irrationally upset when people won't stop talking, eating, or drinking on these trips, so I bought these to block out as much noise as possible. The good news is that they do a remarkably good job blocking outside noise, even when playing music at relatively low volumes. I also confirmed with some informal testing that not too much sound leaks out of them, so I can avoid being as obnoxious as the people I'm trying to block out. They also look great, and the cord looks like it'll outlive me.The biggest downside for me is that they are very uncomfortable, so much so that after about an hour of wearing them I have to take a break. I'd say my ears are on the larger side, so this might not apply to you, but I really can't use them for my intended purpose as a result. The sound quality is also iffy - I'm no audiophile, but I'd describe the sound as what you'd hear if you were listening to music from a speaker on the other side of an empty room. It's passable, especially when traveling, but far from the best for the price. 2Garbage...poor craftsmanship leads to a short lifetime for these headphones I purchased these headphones specifically for use with an Alesis electronic drum kit. The positives are the sounds from the phones, nice lows and mids, were very good in a low cost headset for an electric set when first purchased. In addition the noise cancelling feature really dropped background noise to a minimum and eliminated any sounds of the sticks hitting the pads. The negative is that these headphones broke down after just a month of used (~1hr per day). The wire coming into the set has a very poor connection that leads to static in the head set and one or both of the cans losing sound. Highly frustrating when you are playing and really unacceptable performance after just a month of use. 1but these guys in combination with a small headphone amp ended up working out great. I get great isolation So far these have been a lifesaver. I play in a small church and prior to these I had a small monitor set up next to me, but since the monitor would rattle that snare, they always turned off the monitors in between worship, and sometimes forgot to turn them back on. We didn't want to spend a lot of money, but these guys in combination with a small headphone amp ended up working out great. I get great isolation, can hear anything mic'd quite well, and if it weren't for my twitchy sound team, you should have to only get your sound mix set up once.In terms of comfort, I don't mind wearing them at all, even though at most I wear them for an hour. There is maybe a small amount of sweat build up, but not overly excessive. The headphones haven't moved around on me while playing which is great since that's one less thing to worry about and they seem to be built well. The only downside could be that there might bit a bit too much sound isolation. Sometimes hearing the un-mic'd crowd can be nice, but I guess that's what I should expect with "Isolation headphones". 4No room for the ears ! No room for the ears. Can't believe the designers were this dumb. There is no room laterally nor depth wise. My ears are flat against my head too. When wearing these, your ears press up against a hard wood like surface. I have had many headphones but these are nothing like them. They all had more depth and never had a hard inner surface. You have to squeeze the ears to get them top go between the cushions. No one with normal ears could wear these for more than a few minutes without pressure pain from being smashed into that hard almost uncushioned surface. I have no clue why the high marks. Maybe they all have very small ears. Only way I could wear these is if I smash the inside back a couple inches. Sound isolation is mediocre at best. I should have tried these on earlier because now I missed my return window.Sound is too much towards bass. 1Not that great. I bought these because people said how great they were in keeping out noise. Like people playing drums, not quite. I returned them because I was studying for boards and needed really quiet setting and these did not do the trick. Plus, that cord is just annoyingly and ridiculously long. It was made for musicians so I guess I was just the wrong audience. But as far as solitude is concerned, these were not that great. They were comfortable around my ears though, I will give them that much. 4Fine for practicing drums, but not for other studio use *Physical Features*These are over the ear, closed headphones with foam cushions, not particularly stylish, but not offensive either. I have an average size head, and these aren't particularly uncomfortable until wearing them for a while, which is going to be the case with ANY sound isolating headphone, and these are way more comfortable than most (although they also block sound less that others, more on that later). The cord is permanently attached, coiled, and is about 3 1/2 foot long at rest, maybe 12 feet long if really stretched out. At first glance it seems to have a 1/4 inch phono jack, but the tip screws off to reveal an alternative standard stereo mini jack that will fit into most portable players or your computer. The ear pieces are hard plastic along with a plastic and wire headband. It's very possible if you dropped these that the earpiece connection would be permanently broken. Where it rests on top of your head is really just a thin piece of cloth over plastic, but they get away with this because it's pretty light and really it's held in place by clamping to the sides of your head.*Sound quality*When I first put them on, I was shocked at how inadequate the sound was. Spending more time with it, I discovered that it does a very good job on the low end of the spectrum, clear enough mids, and the high end is pretty seriously absent. You won't get exciting cymbals, for instance, or any of the other ear candy that tends to lie in that part of the spectrum. Overall, though, there is reasonable frequency isolation, it's not a particularly muddy sound.*Sound isolation*This is adequate, but somewhat meager as far as sound isolating headphones go, rated at only 19db. Still, when playing drums, my snare is usually tightened up like a pistol shot and these do take the edge off to a comfortable level. I don't know what other reviewers are talking about when they say you can't hear anything with these on. I'm guessing they mean if you have them on and music playing, which is the case with most closed ear headphones. These are nothing special, when I'm (for instance) playing drums with a metronome I can hear the drums loud and clear over the click, but they're attenuated to a safe enough volume level so they do the trick for their intended purpose. It's obviously muffled, but you can talk to people with them on, as well as hear other sounds in the room. For example, I have a loud computer fan and I could still hear it faintly up to about 10 or 15 feet away. I have very good hearing, though. And a loud fan. These do a fine job of keeping the sound IN. That's pretty typical with closed ear headphones, though.*Price*Well, yah, you wouldn't really be reading this review if the price didn't catch your attention, would you! There's really no point comparing them to more expensive headphones, it just wouldn't be fair to compete in the same league. These are about as inexpensive as they get, so you do get a surprisingly lot of bang for your buck if your use for them is drumming.*Recommendation*If you're on a budget, these do a fine enough job if you're the target audience (a drummer practicing). They'll capture the bass guitar fine, which is what you're usually playing with, do an ok job with the rest of the mix, and they'll cut the drum volume to a safe level that you can play a long time at. I wouldn't be excited about these as a studio headset, where you might be singing or soloing over the playback. The audio is just not inspiring because of the weakness in the high end. Nor is it useful for mixing for the same reason, nor for listening to quality music for enjoyment. 3Decent and dont sound so bad. This works pretty well, I use it for drumming. Speakers sound decent and keeps the noise out. I use them when drumming for ear protection even with no music playing.THey hold out sweat decently. I own other pairs of ear protection that are a song. After playing you can squirt out sweat, rather gross and non hygenic. These seem to do pretty well at keeping the sweat out and when I ring them out (push the head phones together and squeeze the foam) I get a quarter of the water retention I do with traditional ear protection. 4Wish I would have spent just a little more on a better item I had initially given these a 5/5 due to their isolation and seemingly just the fact that they produced sound, but after a couple years I've become quite disappointed with them.I use these almost exclusively for recording drums. That means I need to be able to hear the rest of the mix, my own monitored playing, and -- most importantly -- a clear click track that I can easily lock in on for time-keeping.These do block out the majority of my kit's volume, which is essential, but the sound quality is SO muddled, distorts SO easily, and is lacking SO MUCH high-end that just trying to separate the click from the rest of the track requires a ton of concentration. Listening should be natural so I can concentrate on playing, and it just isn't with these. That said, after a couple years of semi-regularly blowing recordings on account of not being able to hear what's going on, I'm finally going to count my losses and spend just a bit more on a better set of cans. 2Excellent headphones for noise Cancellation My brother is a drummer. I am not. I write for a living, but in a very Google-esque, incubator type-office. I have been encountering a lot of difficulty concentrating at work due to all the noise around me, so my brother recommended these headphones. I still cannot believe they were under $40. They work so well, even without music playing in the background.Although I'm sure they work excellently for drummers, if you work in a loud office, or other loud environment and are looking for some great headphones that cancel out 99% of the noise around you, these are perfect! 5Inconvenient Measurements & Designs: Consider Before Purchase Consider this before buying: The inside of the ear cup is 7/16" deep, 1 9/16" wide, and 2 5/8" tall. The BIG, BULKY CORD weighs close to 4 ounces by itself that's around 30% of the total combined weight of the headset and cord (the headset only weighs around or a little over 9 ounces). The volume has to be significantly loud, maybe too loud, to hear over an acoustic drum set.I haven't seen a survey on the average ear size of the U.S. population, but chances are that this design does NOT accommodate a lot of people. For me, the cup touches all sides of my outer ear, and the inner screen presses against the surface of my ear, and the foam cushion barely touches my head where it's supposed to. This is not my idea of a comfortable fit.The BIG, BULKY CORD yanks down on the ear cup it is attached to (left) if it dangles free, and it easily displaces the ear cup if it is allowed to swing around, such as when your body is turning/twisting to reach parts of the drum set; fastening it to your shirt or waist band helps, but the stiffness of the cord then causes the cup to displace if you turn your head from side to side. It is a menacing annoyance down the front of the body because it so easily gets in the way there, and running down the back results in a constant backward pull on the earcup, there again often displacing the ear cup.The ambient sound dampening is just enough to save the eardrums from the sharp sound bursts of drum and cymbal attacks, but the music being played to has to be turned up so loud in order to be heard over an acoustic drum set in play that any hearing-saving qualities get compromised again. As for the sound quality, I'm not as critical as others. The quality is at least as good as a standard set of earphones or earbuds, and I am able to hear the parts of the music that I need to hear for keeping time and playing along if turned up loud enough (uncomfortably loud). This sounds like a one-star rating, but I gave it a second star because they are not completely useless. They work, very basically, for the drums if one can get beyond the inconveniences, and maybe more as a last resort for whatever qualities they offer. Overall, I wish I had simply spent the money on a decent pair of headphones that are actually designed to meet the needs of drummers, rather than hoping to get lucky on an economy-priced headset like this. 2
