Description

Product Description Smart, touching, and utterly engaging, Born Under a Lucky Moon is a polished gem of contemporary women’s fiction—and it boldly announces the arrival of author Dana Precious, who immediately takes her place at the winner’s table beside Rebecca York, Jennifer Weiner, and Rebecca Wells. Not unlike Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood and other beloved works of southern women’s fiction—except set in the American Midwest—Born Under a Lucky Moon is a story of family, love, murder, sex scandals, and new beginnings that is, at once, intelligent, endearing, and delightfully quirky. From Booklist Jeannie Thompson has an extremely stressful job as a movie studio executive. The only thing scarier than her job is the thought of introducing her longtime boyfriend, Aidan, to her family. To be fair, the Thompsons have a track record. She grew up the youngest of five kids in a clamorous Michigan clan. She decides to tell Aidan just one of her family?s stories to try to get him to fathom her difficult family. The story starts with her older brother Evan?s wedding in the summer of 1986, which was followed by the surprise wedding of her sister Lucy the very next day and eventually encompassed a continuously broken sprinkler system, a runaway dog, and a sneaky grandmother. The story ends with a murder and a sex scandal. She doesn?t want Aidan to get hurt by her family, which has happened to all her previous boyfriends. But her good intentions unwittingly hurt Aidan, and she can?t repair the damage without the support of her family. This ultimately uplifting story will resonate with anyone who has or knows a large, boisterous, close-knit family. --Hilary Hatton From the Back Cover Born Under a Lucky Moon is the tale of two very important (but distant) years in the lives of Jeannie Thompson and her (embarrassing, crazy) colorful family members to whom "things" just seem to happen. From the Great Lakes of Michigan to Los Angeles and back again, it is a story of surprise marriages, a renegade granny, a sprinkler system cursed by the gods, and myriad other factors Jeannie blames for her full-tilt, out-of-control existence. But it's also about good surprises—like an unexpected proposal that might just open Jeannie's eyes to her real place among the people she loves most in the world . . . the same ones she ran far away from to begin with. About the Author Dana Precious lives in Los Angeles with her husband and son. She has two dogs: a small border terrier named Thompson (as in Hunter—long story) and Bella, a very large bullmastiff whose activity of choice is sleeping on the couch and watching Oprah. Prior to writing, Dana worked for several major film studios.

Customer Reviews

Fall in love with the uniquely crazy, accident-prone Thompsons of Muskegon, Michigan!!!!Being born and raised in Grand Rapids, and taking many trips to Lake Michigan, this book (set in and around Lake Michigan and Muskegon) just called to me! What a fun read! I laughed out loud, shook my head, cringed, and sympathizes with the shenanigans and craziness of this wild, loving family! It was not great literature, but boy, it sure was delightful entertainment! Definitely a summer read......heck, a good read anytime!!! Get comfy because once you start you'll want to continue reading till you have savory the love of Muskegon, Michigan's Thompsonfamily! 5Norsemen hail, all hail.Growing up in the same home town as Dana, I just had to read the book. I just loved the characters, some heavily veiled with a subtle hint to their identity, others with merely a letter change in the spelling of their names. It brought back delightful memories of my little peninsula home town. I could also share her perspective on familial relations, being the youngest in a large family of strong personalities. I couldn't put it down and would find myself up too late until I finished the book. The book's advertising is geared towards women, but I think it's a good read for anyone from a large family, a small mid-western town, or those who want to know what either of them is like. Good job Dana, you've done the Norsemen proud. 5Crazy Naked Grandmas and Pampered Starlets - Love it!This is the only book, out of the thousands my wife has read, where I can recall her laughing so hard that tears were streaming down her face. There were also numerous "Awww" moments as well.So the premise: The (mostly) true story of a precocious small town girl (the youngest of five kids) who makes it big as a Hollywood ad exec but can't seem to escape the wondrously destructive vortex that her family keeps dragging her into. The story is told as a series of flashbacks in which she very patiently explains to her would-be fiance why he might want to reconsider his offer. Both the present day scenes in which she deals with over-pampered starlets agents, studio, heads and directors as well as the flashback scenes in which she deals with the decidedly 'by the bootstrap to a fault' family members and townies are wonderfully revealing and expertly told. At first I found myself along for the ride with the first person voice that was disarmingly neutral. However, as the book progressed I found myself falling head over heals for the character and her seemingly impossible situations. In short this was an amazing read. Strong recommend to buy (guys, this is the one you get for your girlfriend/wife).Dani 5a great readThis book captures all the joy and angst and zaniness of a large family and an even larger extended small town where everyone knows everyone, The contrasting settings of LA and it's over the top "movie" folks with hometown Muskegon offers an excellent and very funny point counter point.I have found out that much of the story is true which offers an additional deliciousness to the tale. 5Wonderfully entertaining a brilliant first work! This novel is a true hidden gem, one of the best first efforts by an author I've had the chance to enjoy. Ms. Precious' easy use of first person narrative drew me immediately into the story and I never wanted to leave. A delightful book that touches upon many of life's defining moments and turbulent issues that we all face, woven around shocking events that few of us have ever experienced. A delightful journey, I highly recommend it. 5Recommend highlyBorn Under a Lucky Moon is a charming, hilarious, feel-good story which had me hooked on page one. I fell in love with a town, a tavern and a cast of lovable characters that I now think of as friends. The book is rich with emotions and surprise events that create wonderful chaos, but be warned... this book may cause laugh-out-loud moments at inappropriate times.I am giving this book to the people I love.Beverly 5Michigan People READ THIS!Ok, I grew up in Michigan, moved away after college and traveled the world. This book brought back all the wonderful Michigan and midwestern ways which you totally forget when you live in Washington D.C.,New York or LA.I raced right out and tried to find a"creme horn". The author delighted me with this book and I hope she writes more. The world needs more books that make you feel good. 5Great funny novel!I am a FB fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and she recommended this first novel of Dana Precious. Since it was about Michigan, which I love, and was humorous, which I appreciate, I bought it and I was not disappointed! The novel shifts between the years 1986 when the heroine was about 20, and 2006, when she reaches a crisis in her work and romantic lives. It was funny, charming, rustic and cosmopolitan all at once. Her life in 2006 was horribly hectic compared to the laid back (on the surface) life in Michigan, but the comedy of errors in her youth (not all hers, but her beloved family's), entertains the reader from start to finish. You want to cheer for the heroes and boo the villains. Most you know from the start in which category to list them! I will look for her future novels! I recommend this novel. 5Fun!!Fun to read about my home town! 5Special setting. Great characters. Fun, fun, fun.I'm in love with North Muskegon Michigan, and I've never even been there. Reading this book makes the place seem like the coolest little lakeside town ever. The way this author weaves the fabric of life there is masterful. With the touch of a true Michigander, she plants us in the world of the solid midwestern citizen--the kind whose deadpan fortitude provides hilarious contrast to the main character, Jeannie, and her close but craziness-prone family. You can smell the damp, hot summer air and feel worn wood of the dock beneath your feet as you read about Jeannie's summer at the shore back at home with her family, who are both her biggest problem and her greatest asset. The antics that surround them are so appallingly entertaining, they remind us to appreciate family life for all its ridiculous and beautiful imperfections. Worth the read for the Grandma scene alone. 5
