Customer Reviews

Perfect timer for our livestock barn exhaust systemI searched FOREVER to find a timer like this. I used all kinds of wording and then stumbled upon this savior somehow. I kept finding timers that were too complicated to program, and I usually have no problems with electronics. This little gem you pick how long you want it to stay on and how long you want it to stay off. It will then repeat that in those intervals forever. You do not have to set each individual day, etc. We wanted to use this in a livestock barn, and it was PERFECT for this. I can't say enough good things about it. 5An incredible, finely adjustable timer. This timer was a lifesaver. We had basement flooding this year and I had a vacuum set up to suck up water in areas where it was collecting. Before this timer, the best I could find was a half hour on, half hour off type. I could finely adjust the on-off times and it was a huge deal. It took a little getting used to, but once I understood how it worked, it worked great. 5Old pellet stove applicationAfter the rheostat broke on our old pellet stove I didn't know what to do, it was stuck on high. We tried using a thermostat, but that only worked to shut off the auger when the room reached the right temp then the pellets burnt down to almost nothing before it kicked on and started filling the burn pot. Well that just smoldered and smoked.I decided to try a cycle timer, but didn't know what one to use. I saw someone asked the question if this timer could be used for an auger on a pellet stove and someone answered yes that's what they did. We opened up our pellet stove found the power wire and the common wire cut those away and wired it into a plug. We plugged it into our century timer did some minor adjustments and it's been running for 48 hours perfectly. If you have an old pellet stove like mine that you can't get parts for and have to light yourself this will work for timing your auger. 5lame method of mode selectiionThere are 3 modes of operation which requires unplugging from AC, and using the two controls max and min positions sequenced is a particluar way ito select the desired mode is confounding. Good luck if you lose the instructions, as there are no indicator which mode is operational. This is the kind of user interface designed by naive designers. The decision to forego a 3 position switch and save a dollar of parts is classic failure to understand basic concepts of Intuitive User Interface. The manufacturer needto put an adult in charge of the user interface. 2First unit defective, second one OKThe first one I received was defective. I needed to operate an ice machine after surgery; it needs to be on for 30 minutes and off for 20. The first one operated erratically; on for a few minutes, off for an hour or so. I tried various settings and nothing worked. I ordered another one and this one worked better. I had to set it on off for 35 minutes to get it to stay off for 30 minutes; when I set it to off for 20 minutes it would be off for about 15 minutes which was not good. Setting it on for 30 minutes only keeps it on for 27 to 29 minutes but that is acceptable. So as long as it doesn t have to be exact this unit works well; just watch out for defective units. 4Stopped working after a few daysSomething that is good to know: You have to "initialize" the unit in order for it to work with the times you set on the dial. Out of the box, it will not work at the times you set. You must set both values to zero, then plug it in and move both dials within a few seconds. This is clearly described in the instructions, but it's not clear that initialization is necessary. The reason for the poor rating is it failed after several days. I was using it on a plant cloning setup, and it's controlling a single 20-watt water pump: 4 minutes on, 7 minutes off. The first day it seemed to work fine. The second day it started developing a stutter, and just before shutting off the water pump it would shake. This lasted for two days before the timer function completely failed and now it just stays on 24/7.I removed it and attempted to "re-initialize" it, but no matter what I set the timer dials to the power to the outlet on the unit stays on all the time. There is a small LED that says "Output on" which indicates when the timer is allowing power to flow through to the outlet. On my unit, this will light up and then turn off on the intervals I have on the dials, but the outlet still receives power even when the LED shuts off.UPDATE: I raised rating to four stars because Century's customer service was great throughout the process and comp'd me a timer. 4You might think it's DOA. Just not intuitive and no instructions includedNo instructions are included and operation is not at all intuitive. Watch the video in the posting for operation. You must 1) turn both controls fully counter-clockwise 2) Plug into a wall socket 3) WITHIN 5 SECONDS(!) turn both controls fully clockwise. [to ON light will illuminate] 3) Set per desired operation. If you don't do this exactly, the unit will just sit there and do nothing. Operation for night only or day only is even more complicated. I guarantee you won't figure that out without watching the video. Good luck remembering how to do it a year from now.INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS!!! Minus two stars for what should be a 5 star product. 3I've been searching for years - finally found it!!I've been looking for an intermittent timer for a long time and could never find one until now. "Short Cycle Timer." Who knew that's what these were called? Anyway, this thing is perfect for my needs. I have an antique copper chocolate melter (essentially a baine marie/double boiler) and the heating elements work but the temperature/thermostat control is no longer functioning. The result of that is the heating elements rage on and never turn off. I removed the old control switch, plugged it into this wonderful device and set it for 1 minute on and 10 minutes off (it took some experimenting to get the right on/off cycle figured out). It maintains my melter at the perfect temp. It has an infinite number of on/off setting combinations. You can set it up to activate only during day hours, only night hours (it has a photo-voltaic sensor) or 24 hours. The on/off settins are easy to set - you just turn a dial. No digital programming to monkey with. I will be buying more of these as there are many applications for this control. 5Perfect for fermentingThis was just what the doctor ordered for my freezer fermentation chamber. I have an ink bird temp controller and I was trying to keep the temp at 66 for pale ale. The temp was fluctuating between 66 and 64.5 presumably because the inside of the freezer stays cold well after the controller turns the compressor off. I added this timer and set it to ten minutes on ten minutes off. Now when the controller turns the compressor on it only kicks in for ten minutes. That gives the freezer ten minutes to cool the interior. If it still doesn't cool below set mark it goes another round. Making pale ale is fun. Now the temp of my fermenter stays between 65.5 and 67.Update - still going strong 5reconsidered the timerWon't move to the "on" cycle. Worked for three months, sat idle for six months, then would not cycle. Too expensive to replace every year. Since I've submitted this review "Century" contacted me and offered to replace the timer at no cost to me. This new one seems to be more accurate in the settings and is working well. I've changed the "star" rating to reflect not only the device but also Century reaching out to satisfy me even though warrantee had expired. 4
