Customer Reviews

Life saver for the vertically challengedAfter cleaning out the garage, I wanted to make the outlets that hang from the ceiling usable. Being 5'4", trying to plug anything into these outlets is a pain at the best and downright embarrassing at the worst. That's why I installed this cord reel. Two screws into to a ceiling joist and now I wonder how I worked in the garage without it! 30 feet of cord is more than enough for my garage (especially since it's mounted in the near center) and I find myself using it more often than I actually expected. The black retention ball can be moved to extend or shorten how much cable actually hangs. I pushed it as close to the end as possible to minimize the amount of wire that hangs, but is still long enough where I can easily grab the outlet and get to work.5Don't unreel it all the way.I bought this to replace a 20 year old one that broke. It worked great until I extended the cord all the way. At that point it stuck and would not retract. I tried to fix it but destroyed it in the process. I call Bayco and they gave me some advice. 1- Put a piece of colored tape on the cord near the end so you know when to stop unreeling. 2 - They have instructions on their website on how to retract it in case it were to happen again. As a courtesy, support is mailing me a replacement. Great support and thanks.5No resettable circuit breaker, you draw too much power it dies and cannot be resetI cannot recommend this reel without a resettable circuit breaker. I should have read the fine print.I loved this reel until the other day, when it died on my wife. I verified that there was power to the reel. Doing some research there is a non resettable fuse in the 3 plug connector. When that LED light goes out it means the circuit was tripped and there is no way to reset it. I did cut the 3 plug connector off and verified that there is power at the end of the cord. So I will add another standard plug to the cord. For those who want the circuit protection back in the reel you will need to get something like the link below rated for 10 amps.Good luckhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XPGCWMV/ref=crt_ewc_title_dp_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1WKF8TBPRFL2U'1Way to utilize the garage door opener outlet on ceiling One of my favorite parts of my garage! So handy! Does anyone else have the issue where the builders put like 3 outlets in your garage? And one is on the ceiling for the garage door opener? I mean really?? How am I supposed to power my toys?? This bad boy let s me utilize that extra plug on the ceiling that would otherwise go to waste. Cord retracts well. 3 ports. Light to tell you it s hot. One note: Make SURE you hit a rafter or scab in a brace in your attic. I tried to use drywall anchors (my own idea not recommended by manufacturer) thinking it would hold....it did not. Hit the stud. Trust me. 5Cord shorted out after 18 mos. FIRE HAZARDThe wire within the cord severed where the cord meets the triple socket end after less than 18 months with minimal usage. Now the sockets only sometimes receive power when I twist the cord a certain way (very dangerous as this is now a FIRE HAZARD). Very disappointing quality considering a garage utility cord should hold up to moderate use at minimum.UPDATE:I cut the original three plug adapter off of the cord and replaced it with a surge protector. It's been working like a charm for the last year now. Still not worth the overall hassle and added expense of buying a surge protector, but at least it's not in a land fill...2BE AWARE!!BE AWARE...there is no resettable circuit breaker or a replaceable fuse. So if you overdraw and the red LED light goes out, you have to throw it out. I called Bayco and they confirmed it can't be fixed. For a few dollars more they could make it with a breaker or fuse. Now my only solution is to throw it out or cut off the outlet and put one on that has no circuit protection or buy a new reel and this time maybe from a company that has a resettable breaker.1PATHETIC, UNACCEPTABLE excuse for a cord reel. AVOIDA NON-USER SERVICEABLE 10A FUSE!? WHY IS THIS, BAYCO? So run the shop-vac for too long while the de-humidifier kicks on and POOF....THERE GOES $45????? The unit becomes USELESS? NO user replaceable/resetable fuses/breakers? WHAT A JOKE OF A PRODUCT!SHAME ON YOU for putting out such garbage! I would like my $45 back, please. Oh, it's beyond the whole "one year warranty". AWESOME. I'll just go back to using my 20 y/o extension cord.AVOID BAYCO. READ AND BELIEVE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS.IT WILL FAIL ON YOU BECAUSE IT'S A DISCOUNT STORE CALIBER POS.1Better upgraded version exist BLUF: There is a upgraded/improved version out there from the same company. The upgraded version is even cheaper (see details below and pictures for comparison)I owned this retractable reel for the last 3 yrs and had no major issues until today (other than the occasional inability to lock the cord in place). I made a mistake and plugged in high amp/draw unit (log splitter) and this caused the internal fuse to blow. The fatal flaw is that once the built in 10AMP fuse is blown then there isn't any way to reset it. Therefore, this unit will not work and just end up being an expensive paperweight.I called the manufacturer and confirmed that the fuse cant reset or replaced. Instead, the company recommend the"Bayco CA-800B2." The CA-800B2 is 99% identical to the SL-800 but it has a built in 10amp w/ Circuit Breaker. This integrated circuit breaker will allow you to reset a blown fuse. The CA-800B2 is a no brainer since it cost LESS than the SL-800. The CA-800B2 cost $41.99 (as of 18JAN2015) and the SL-800L cost $43.99 ((as of 18JAN2015) don't know why the CA-800B2 isn't more popular. So in summary, this product is great when it works but don't use any high draw/demand power unit that will blow the internal fuse. If you do then the unit will no longer work.I hope my assessment helps. 2Solid, good qualitySolid, good quality. I just bought this for a second time. The first one lasted 2.5 years, which is pretty good considering i use it almost every single night. That's about 850 days of use. The red light eventually stopped coming on and it had no power. I did disassemble it and fix it a couple times, but it still had issues. This is not a bad review.. I bought another, as it works excellent, and for the price, it lasted even longer than expected. I will buy a 3rd one in another 2-3 years if i need to.4Reel caused damage to cord and eventual FIRE!!!Originally I purchased this and thought it was fantastic. Retraction worked well, locked out, and was all around handy to have. So much so that I purchased one for my brother. Here we are a year and half later. I used the cord about once every couple months mostly for drop lights and things of that sort. The end of the cord rarely came in contact with anything since it was hanging from the ceiling i.e. the rest of the cord including end looks brand new. Tonight I was using it and noticed some smells from inside the garage and couldn't locate it until I went to retract the cord and noticed smoke. I pulled the cord the rest of the way out to find that the reel had somehow worn through the coating and you know what happened next. I took pictures to show that this part of the cord could never have contacted the ground and to show the damage to the cord. BUYER BEWARE!!!!1Buyer BewareDo yourself a favor and actually read the fine print. This cheap cord reel is only rated for 10 amps, making it almost useless for any home improvement/workshop use. Even when using it with equipment rated at 10amps, this cord reel will get extremely hot, around 125 . Just beware, that s all I m saying.1Complete junkI purchased this product and it ceased to work within the first use. After some more diligent research via the Amazon reviews I saw where many people reported issues with the one time use curse built in to the unit. As per many of the review recommendations I replaced the female cord end where this fuse is located. But this did not resolve my problem. The internal workings of the cord reel itself had quit working. This was all within the first 5 minutes of use. If they would spend a little more time improving the product it could be a great value for the money. As it stands, it is nothing but a huge cost for me as it required me to make return warranty calls to my customer and subsequently cost me money. Spend a few extra dollars on any other product and you will be much happier.1I installed this in my garage ceiling to have easy access to power without having to run extension cords ... I have a motorcycle for work that has an accessory pack that needs to be charged nightly. I installed this in my garage ceiling to have easy access to power without having to run extension cords all over. This has worked great since I have installed. it. Generally I only extend it 2-3 feet at a time on a regular basis, but once every other week or so I have found the need to have it nearly fully extended. It locks into position at the desired length, and retracts easily when needed. This perfectly met my needs. 5
