    Description

    This high power digital microscope has an incident and transmitted illumination system. Designed for students to learn science, it comes with full optical glass elements, metal framework, 360 degree rotatable monocular head, coarse & fine focusing, 2MP USB digital camera, and top & bottom LED lights that use either an outlet (adapter included) or three AA batteries (or re-chargeable batteries). It can view transparent biological slides and/or opaque objects like stamps and coins. It offers five magnification settings, 40X, 100X, 250X, 400X and 1000X. The digital camera captures still images and video, and allows you to view a live stream on your PC. The included software for Windows offers image-development and measurement tools, as well as advanced compositing features such as image-stitching and extended-depth-of-focus. Independent preview and capture resolutions allow you to view high-speed video while capturing high-definition images. On Mac computers, the camera can be used as a driverless imaging device, compatible with various applications, such as ProScope and Photo Booth.. This is an ideal microscope for academics in home school and from students in elementary to high school. A microscope of this caliber is an excellent instrument for hobbyists. It comes brand new in a factory sealed box.

    Needs stage motion...This is a reasonably good scope, but next time I'd definitely spend the extra bucks for a scope with stage motion so that it would be possible to traverse smoothly across the field of view. Attempting to move the slide by hand just doesn't work. In a way it seems weird to offer a scope without this feature. Oh well.3Five StarsThis is a great scope for the price. Easy to use and adjust for a clear view.5Nice Student-grade 'Scope. for the money.This is a nice student-grade microscope for under $200. Not professional lab-quality, but still several steps above the average kid's microscopes sold in hobby shops, which are little better than toys. This 'scope would be quite suitable for use in high school, or even freshman-level college science labs.A body of mostly metal construction is the first big plus. The arm supporting the eyepiece is neatly designed with a built-in handle, making it easy to relocate what could otherwise be an awkward piece of equipment. The base is properly weighted and very stable, giving the whole device a nice, solid, professional feel. The mechanical stage operates smoothly, without slop, and has both coarse and calibrated fine adjustment knobs on both sides. There is an iris diaphragm with, I believe, 8 settings. There is also a stage "safety stop", which can be set to restrict the upward travel of the stage, protecting slides and objectives from damage by inexperienced users.The optics are, again, very impressive for the price. Three objective lenses and two eye pieces all have solid metal bodies, and offer a clear view, free from any obvious distortion. One eyepiece features an internally-mounted pointer, which could be useful in a teaching situation. The turret holding the eyepiece can be rotated through 360 degrees, or fixed in place with set-screws. There are two illuminators -- LEDs -- one below, and one above the stage. A switch on the rear of the base allows selection of either upper or lower illuminator, and a thumbwheel on the left of the base controls the brightness of the light source. The lights will run on either battery power (three AA cells, included), or on a 4.5-volt AC adaptor (also included).The 3MP USB camera (cable and software included) is not the highest resolution camera available from AmScope, but it is many steps above the old 640x480 resolution camera that my old Intel QX3 featured. Really, the QX3 is a toy; the M158C is a real microscope.Software installed without incident on my HP mobile workstation, running Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit; the label says it will also work with Windows 8.0/8.1 and windows 10. Software performed as advertised.I do have a few caveats (one star's worth, anyway!):1) The two illuminators cannot be turned on simultaneously, it's one or the other, and the top light isn't nearly as bright as the bottom light. This makes it difficult to view opaque objects under any but the lowest power settings. (To be fair, AmScope recommends stereo-optic scopes for opaque objects.)2) You are warned not to use the AC power adaptor unless you use rechargeable batteries, but the batteries supplied are not rechargeable.3) Most annoyingly (to me), the 'scope did not include a user manual. Instead, it came with a "Customer Information Sheet" giving a web-link where a manual could be download -- but only with a password, which they failed to supply. This really seems unnecessarily complicated; I'm used to having to download manuals that used to printed, but why require a password? I've already bought and paid for the 'scope; just give me the damned manual.Well, upon contacting AmScope, they \did\ just send me the manual, so that problem was easily solved, but it could have been avoided entirely by simply enclosing the manual with the microscope.4) Finally, there is no case for this 'scope. It comes with a plastic dust cover -- very flimsy; feels like it might last a couple of weeks at best. You can buy a wooden storage box for an additional $48, but there is no molded case, as there is for the more expensive scopes. Well, $200 is still not a toy, so I'll probably either buy or make a box to protect it.These are all really minor points, though. The bottom line is that this is probably one of the best microscopes you're going to find for under $200, and well worth what you spend.4
