Great eyepiece for a Great price. Can't beat I have been looking into buying a hood eyepiece. I found a similar brand that was ten bucks more but decided to buy this one after reading the more expensive brand reviews that it was hard to place. This eyepiece is perfect. I have a Nikon 7100 and it clicked on without any effort and has not come off while in my bag. It is very comfortable when using it. I look funny with it but the comfort of the eyepiece is worth it. It can rotate right or left depending on your eye position. It does cover the top of my screen but that is not a big deal as I do more post processing anyway and only look at screen to get a quick view of my shot (never to edit). I would recommend for anyone who seeks comfort and light blockage while looking through the viewfinder of their camera. (sorry my pics are sideways as I can't figure out how to rotate them in the reviews yet) :D 5Highly Recommended - Well Worth Its Price Last summer, I lost an eyepiece similar to this one. It got too soft in the heat and decided to fall off. I could not find it. So I bought the one from Altura. It snapped right on my Nikon DSLR. It is stiffer than the one I lost, but not uncomfortable. I soaked it in some very warm water to see how soft it would get. Yes, it did get a little softer as expected, but not to the degree where it would tend to come of its mounting frame. Excellent. A few days ago, I took some pictures outside in sub-freezing temperature. It remained comfortable, and I could still easily rotate it. What more can you ask for?It covers a small portion on the top of the LCD screen, but that does not bother me at all. I can still see what I need to. It does not obscure any portion of the viewfinder, and there is no more annoying light coming in from the sides or the top. This eyepiece does exactly do what it is supposed to, very effectively at that.There are numerous competitor's products out there, but I know I picked the right one. I turned right around and bought another one for my other Nikon DSLR. I highly recommend this product. 5Better than my original eyepiece for NIKON d5300 Love it! It rotates. It fits tighter than original. My original would always pop off when taking it out of the case. I still can see the full LCD screen in Live View. Just tilt it slightly. When I do close the screen, I just pull up on the eyepiece slightly and rotate the LCD and slide the eyepiece back down. I'm using a NIKON d5300. 5Fails to stay on & easily comes off with simple shoulder carry I really wanted this to work as intended, but unfortunately it just couldn't make it through a 45-minute walk in a park -- literally. In less than 10 minutes on a leisurely stroll with the camera (Nikon D7200) on its shoulder strap hanging at my side and lightly braced with my hand to avoid swinging, I had unknowingly lost the eye cup and only realized it was gone when I went to take a photo. I backtracked and finally found it about 30 feet from my car. After reattaching it & checking for secure fitment, I continued to look for squirrels & birds to photograph. I had believed that the eye cup was secure, but was informed by another park visitor walking a short distance behind that I dropped something. Yep - the eye cup came off again. Bottom line: it came off 1 more time before I put the factory original back on. While it did block a portion of the LCD screen, it wasn't a lot & the camera could be angled to view the obstructed portion. The screen does not move on the D7200, so that wasn't a problem as some may have with articulating screens or prefer Live View. The rubber could be a little softer to conform to face shapes (eyes, nose, cheeks, etc.) but it wasn't bothersome. It did block light when attached, but the view was marginally obstructed by the design & proximity of distance from my eye to the viewfinder. I wish this item had worked as intended by staying attached securely, but it failed several times under very mild carrying and leisurely walking conditions. It is in the mail on the way back.* does not fit securely & falls off the camera* blocks some viewable coverage in the viewfinder* rubber could be softer 1Here's the scoop when using with Nikon's D5100 The eyecup is good and shields light nicely. To rotate into landscape mode is possible, but the rotation is quite stiff. I'm thinking a careful application of WD-40 with a cotton swab, being careful not to get the lubricant on the part of the unit that slides onto the correspondent mounting grooves on the camera, might be just the ticket.The articulated screen of the D5100 does, as mentioned in the product specs, collide with the eyecup, necessitating removal of the eyecup from the camera in order to swing the screen out or back in. While this is not such a big deal, my example broke as a result of this frequent on/off action. It still works-- just a little piece of plastic along one side broke, causing it to fit more loosely.Overall, I like the eyecup, especially if the WD-40 trick might work. Hang on a sec. I'll go try that now. I'll be right back.OK, the WD-40 helps, but the rubber is still a little resistant to turning. I rolled back the eyepiece, reversing its concavity to allow access to the ring about which it rotates and applied the WD-40 with a cotton swab. For me, it was still a little too sticky. I think I'll try some graphite lock lubricant and see if that works.UPDATE: After a few days, the WD-40 kicked in and the cup rotates pretty easily. Definitely an improvement over the way it came. I like the eyecup and use it all the time. It seals out ambient light and prevents distracting reflections in the viewfinder.Meanwhile, here's the executive summary:PROS: * Reasonably comfortable. * DOES rotate. * Screens out ambient light effectively. * InexpensiveCONS: * Rotates, but very stiffly. (see UPDATE above) * Collides with articulated screen on D5100 and similar models. * Better removed for storage and replaced with each camera use. * Construction is such that care is needed in removing and installing the eyecup.UPDATE (August 17, 2014) AND HOT TIP TO FIX THE LOOSE FIT ON D7000 AND D7100 NIKONS: Ok, here's what I did to fix the loose fit. For a long time I was just super careful not to lose the eyecup. There are two little plastic grippers on each side of the eyecup that are intended to grip the eyepiece groove on the camera. They don't grip very well, resulting in a loose fit. I thought about this and came up with what seems a satisfactory solution. You'll need a rubber band like the type that comes on broccoli (wide and a little thick), a pair of scissors, a sharp exacto knife, and a little bit of super glue. Here's what to do: 1. Examine the openings by the little grippers and cut a piece of rubber band about the same length as the opening. 2. If your rubber band is 1/4" or so wide, now cut the section lengthwise that you just cut to the fit the gripper. 3. Slip each of the two pieces into the slot by the "gripper" and trim away any excess with the exacto knife. 4. Drop a tiny drop of super glue on each rubber band section in the grippers. Let it dry for a while. Now your eyecup will fit snugly onto the eyepiece. Be gentle putting it on and taking it off, but once it's on with this modification, it's going to stay on much better than it would without the mod. OK? Hope this helps. I like the eyepiece and wouldn't be without it. It lets me concentrate on the field of view, shielding extraneous light. I keep both eyes open, myself, and that really works for me. YMMV. 4Comfortable, easy-to-use, blocks surrounding light I purchased two of these initially and liked them enough to purchase two more so I had one on each of my three camera bodies and one spare. I find them to be comfortable and easily adjustable from left eye to right eye. I don't wear my glasses while shooting as a rule so I can't speak to others comments as to whether or not this cup fits while wearing, but what I do love about them is shutting out the light from around the viewfinder, allowing for a better and sharper image while hand holding the camera and tracking birds in flight. I don't find the issue of a partial screen obstruction as an issue either since I don't chimp after firing off 20-30 shots. If I need to ensure I got what I wanted, a quick look at the LCD shows me. If you're someone who needs to see each shot you took, you may find the small area the cup covers irritating, but the comfort factor of this product as well as blocking surrounding light were the best features for me. 5Adapts Well to the Nikon P900 I ordered this to adapt to my Nikon P900 that takes fabulous pictures but has a terrible viewfinder eyepiece. The eyepiece on the camera is not removable and I am constantly trying to block out the light that is highly distractive while focusing. I never used the LCD because the glare outside makes it nonfunctional for my purposes (taking photos of birds, butterflies and flowers with a few landscapes here and there.) I read where a reviewer used this particular eyepiece by using black electrical tape. His description did not work for my P900. So, I just sat the replacement eyepiece on the Nikon's and used the electrician's tape to secure. I was careful to cutaway as the tape approached the diopter adjustment dial. It is the PERFECT solution and seems to be surely held. No mire light leaking in. The only problem is the LCD screen does not work. I am assuming there was a sensor on the Nikon eyepiece that was covered up. For me that is NOT an issue because I never used the LCD screen at all. Even when viewing photos outside to decide if it is one to delete I always use the viewfinder. It's well made and soft....just what I needed. 5Perfect!!! Unless You Use the DK-20C Corrective Diopter . . . Please Read This For Solution To Nikon Fit Issue This eyepiece does the job on my Nikon D3300--very comfortable, blocks the light, and allows me to sight with my left eye by swiveling 360 degrees, and fits the camera perfectly. The swivel action is nice and tight, will stay in place without constant adjustment. The rubber is firm, not stiff, and softly flexible. I'm very happy with my purchase and will probably buy another soon just to have a spare on hand.I have a single caveat for Nikon camera owners who are using the corrective diopter, DK-20C, on their cameras. This eyepiece will not slide over the diopter without adjustment to the diopter itself to widen the grooves for the little side rails of the eyecup. I addressed this in an answer to one of the questions on this very issue. Here's the solution, if you're up for a challenge . . ."You may have already found a solution to this problem, answer to your question, or decided to make do. I have both an answer and a solution so that you will not need to make do.There is a gap in Nikon's accessories for users, like you and me, who require the corrective diopter. I don't wear contacts and don't want to try to use my camera with glasses. Thank goodness for the DK 20-C range of diopters.Unfortunately, as I'm sure you've already discovered, once you've installed your new diopter the original eyepiece with the comfortable rubber surround no longer fits. It LOOKS as though it should slide right over the new diopter, but it doesn't. The grooves in the sides of the diopter, which should correspond to the grooves in your camera's eyepiece, are just slightly too narrow to allow the flat eyecup with the rubber surround to fit.I'm sad to say that this flared eyecup has the same problem. It fits perfectly on the camera eyepiece IN PLACE OF the original eyecup with the rubber cushion, but it will not fit on the diopter. So, you're left with a choice, use the diopter without any sort of eyecup for comfort or to block the light, or make do with no diopter at all and wear your specs.There is a third option if you're up for it. You will require a small, thin, fine file--thin enough to fit in the grooves on either side of the diopter lens. I used the file blade on a standard Swiss army knife. It's perfect for the job. You'll need to go slow and take your time removing only enough of the plastic grooves to widen them enough, just enough, for the eyecup frame to slide snugly onto the diopter. Of course the same technique can be used to get the original eyecup back on the camera with the DK 20-C diopter in place.Nikon is aware of this problem, but doesn't seem to be burdened by the knowledge. I spoke at length with customer service one day. The agent suggested I search for third party suppliers with an eyepiece option, which I did. But, I guess the third party manufacturers are copying the Nikon part dimensions, so theirs don't fit over Nikon's diopters either. The only Nikon made accessory I've found which DOES fit the corrective diopter is the DK-5 eyepiece cap. Works great!I have to say that I really love this eyecup. It rotates 360 degrees and really blocks the light while being very comfortable.Just be aware you'll have to make the adjustments I described to the diopter." 5Does what is intended for exceedingly well, no regrets or complaints I ordered this item nearly a month ago and have used it daily on my D750 and have absolutely no complaints so far, it looks and feels like a quality product, the eyepiece rotates easily to shoot with either eye or to switch between landscape and portrait orientation and it fits comfortably around the eye keeping all day or studio lights out of the viewfinder and your eyes letting you concentrate on composition without distractions, it slides on the camera body very snug and stays there like is supposed to.I seldom write reviews unless a product's price, quality and performance are worth writing home about sort of speak and this item is a no brainer, specially in this time and age where everything is cheaply made and few things survive heavy use, shooting in daylight without an eyecup can be a pain, specially in Florida where i live so for me it was a must. 5Decent quality & does what its supposed to do! This is a good product for the price! Upon opening, it was easy for me to put on my camera, taking only a couple of seconds. It locks on well, so there isn't a risk of losing it as long as you have it clipped on correctly. I just got it yesterday and haven't gotten a chance to shoot very many photos with it on my camera, but from the moments I got to try it out, It was easy to see that this will be quite useful. With the stock eyepiece on my Nikon D3300, if I am taking a photo it a relatively bright setting, the light can easily creep in at several angles and distract me. With this, only a minimal amount of light slips between my eye and the viewfinder, leading to a photo that could be more focused, and with more correct exposure. Overall, I am satisfied with this product. My only complaint being that it partially covers the top of my screen which can by slightly irritating at times, but it's subtle enough to where it doesn't bother me a lot. 5
