Customer Reviews

Very Good and ComprehensiveThere's a sea of girl's books out there, and I'm determined to weed through each. Katie Meier's book has a long title, and surprisingly covers a lot - spirituality, body image, peer pressure, and more. Very similar to most non-fiction girl's books, Meier gives the advice in a big sister way. What separates this book from others? It actually goes into scripture and is not afraid to be frank about religion, as well. That in itself, unlike a lot of girl's non-fiction books which shy away from one of the most important aspect in a girl's life (their emotional and spiritual side), makes this book true to itself and 5 stars. Other girls books that do not shy away from being true - the Gifted Girls Series and the Gutsy Girls books. 5I give it as a gift all the timeI wish I had a manual like this at that age! This is great for the preteen and teenage girl. 5Wish I had this Book when I was a teenSometimes books of the self-help genre aimed at teens can get a little, unpractical, unrealistic and down right corny. They all have good ideas and good intentions but with my experience with teenagers (as a former teenager and one that has worked with teenagers) they want the option to make their own decisions. Give them the options, and most of the time teenagers, especially teenage girls, will make a good choice. Part and parcel of the teenager years is the discovery of oneself and who "you" really are. Sometimes humans, let alone teens but especially teenage girls, are not given that room. Thats is what I love about "A Girl's Guide to Life".Honestly, when I started reading this book I was waiting for the "A"-typical line of most of these books - this book presents the best way to do life. I was pleasantly surprised. Katie Meier's approach is refreshing. It gives teen girls the tools they need to get through the teen years with out sounding preachy. It covers topics ranging from depression to sex in a tone that is not condescending but straight forward. While it does present many view points, the presences of real morals and deep thought is there. The way Meier deals with equality and women's rights is interesting. The in which she recognizes that there are roles which women cannot play well does not diminish from her discussion on the fact that women are equals to men and should be seen as such. It was excellent. The one thing I would have liked to seen in the portion on sex is how teens who are reading the book, who have already had sex, can change their paths direction. Other than that, I can say that my copy is well underlined and notes have been made in the margins.I think that this book would be a great read even for adult women who are still struggling with issues they never addressed from their teen years.Needless to say, I wish I had this book when I was a teen. 4It's OK, a little mainstream pop-culture for my tastes ...It's OK, a little mainstream pop-culture for my tastes but my daughter wanted to read it together so I bought it. Then she lost interest. Now I've got two copies. Anyone want one? 3Where was this book when I was a teen?Katie Meier's book for teen girls looks at a broad range of subjects. "A Girl's Guide to Life" blends an informal tone with serious topics, including eating disorders, prejudice, and sexuality. Divided into Mind, Body, and Soul sections, the book contains chapters on health, beauty, and well-being. Each chapter contains Big Myth/Real Deal sections, in which Meier adds a dose of reality to some common misconceptions. Some brief workbook-style questions and answers are included, as well as charts and tables for at-a-glance information. This book will definitely resonate best with Christian teens. Meier manages to write in a style that is accessible to teens, but doesn't talk down to her readers.I wish this book had been available when I was a teen. Although Meier addresses contemporary issues, such as AIDS and internet social networking, there are timeless truths in much of Meier's advice. I highly recommend this book for the teenage girl in your life, perhaps as a birthday gift. She will appreciate the straightforward advice, presented from a Christian point of view. This book was provided to me by Thomas Nelson via [...]. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.A Girl's Guide to Life: The Real Dish on Growing Up, Being True, and Making Your Teen Years Fabulous! 5Very informativeBought this book for my 12 year old daughter a great guide to life as a teen 5A Girl's Guide To Life : The Real Dish on Growing Up, BeingThis book is a must read for preteens and teen girls everywhere! IT is written in a fun to read style in the authors voice which makes it so easy to relate to and understand. Not only does this book offer a step by step guide through the tough questions from periods to boyfriends, it helps you through the silly and painful parts of being a girl in her teens. And,if you need answers to questions about ANYTHING you can't ask your mom or other friends about, the phone numbers and web sites are listed in the book. It's a great read, fun and entertaining at the same time. I wish I had a book like this when I was a teen!!! 5A girls guide to lifeI bought this book for my self, and I loove it!!It has alot of good information about puberty, and growing up.Great book, I would give it 10 stars if I could!!Do your self a favor and buy this book! It is a very wonderful bookfor any christian teen or preteen girl. I recommend it to ages 12-15 5great for future housewives and for conformist viewsmy mom gave me this book when I was about 12, even at the time I really did give the book much more then a glance. A few months ago I looked back on the book and basically it enourages girls to center their lives around guys, clothes, and christ. I'm sorry when I have a daughter I do not and would not want her to read a book like this that enourages girls to basically be a stereotype of looking pretty, being obedient to men, etc. I want to enourage pride, cutiousity, intelligence, and strength and not breed the next generation of housewives or the wives and mothers of important men. I also do not appreciate the author's "view" on homosexuality. I do not enoucourage homophobia or intolerance either. 1Some Good Tips, but a Little ShallowThis is an okay book. I would give it maybe three and a half stars. It has some good tips, but it's too general. In attempts to be cool and knowledgable, it sometimes comes across as flippant or patronizing. "Trust me, baby."The advice on broken hearts is inadequate. Two sentences cannot mend this kind of pain. More useful titles might include A Tale of Three Kings by Gene Edwards, Moving Beyond the Myths by Jan Silvious, and The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis, not to mention scriptures like Psalm 147:3 and Joel 2:25.The section on masturbation is almost neutral. This is bad! Masturbation is always accompanied by lustful thoughts. We have sex drives and that's a good thing, but a Christian devoted to Christ is called to control these drives (starting with their thought life) through the power of the Holy Spirit. See Psalm 19:14, Proverbs 6:18, Philippians 4:8.The head-over-heart vs. heart-over-head section is right on. These are accurate observations. (I am head over heart, for the record.)The New Developments chapter is helpful, containing useful information on feminine products and undergarments that many adult women still don't have. This could be a lifesaver if you don't have a reliable guide in your own life. For titles heavier on solid, Biblical principles, I would recommend "Big Girls Don't Whine" and/or "Smart Girls Think Twice" by Jan Silvious. Both titles contain freeing truth and much wisdom for dealing with life and other peoeple. Real life principles apply at all ages, not just the teenage years. This title is perhaps worth a read. Take it with a grain of salt. Maybe use the questionable sections as jumping-off points for meaningful discussions, and to show that Christians are free to utilize the good without blindly swallowing the not-so-good. 3
