Customer Reviews

Tekton Torque Wrench I just got mine yesterday and honestly I'm a bit disappointed the way it looks, I posted a few photos of the product and the two screws were over torque from what it looks like (is that normal?). The handle got scratches all over it and a small chip and feels sharp enough to cut me. I do not usually post bad review but I was let down on this one, I was hoping to get more stuff from tekton but I surely learn my lesson about tools over the internet. I will keep it though because I don't like to waste my time sending it back.Update 9/18/2015I got my replacement yesterday and I'm really satisfied on how Russ from Tekton took care of this, I asked how to return the other original item and instead let me hang on to it. You guys just won another customer and like I said I have more on my wish list under Tekton product but I want to see how this transaction goes. I am not a big fan of online purchase but definitely gave me a confidence ordering tools from Tekton. Thanks for a great customer service, now you deserved my updated 5 stars! 5Worked first time, sheared bolt the second. I originally bought this in 2016 to tighten a new yoke nut on my motorcycle. It worked fine; I heard the click at the appropriate setting. Not sure how accurate it was but assumed it was good to go based on all the high reviews.Today for the second time in two years, I needed a torque wrench. I ve had my Tekton stored in a closet in its protective case and at the lowest torque setting as per the manufacturer s instructions. I needed 10 ft lb torque (the lowest setting on my wrench) to torque two swing arm spools. On the first, it came very close to stripping the bolt, and I never heard a click but decided to stop before it got completely stripped. I blamed myself and assumed I had my allen bit at an angle. On the second spool I slowly twisted the wrench and again, no click. What I did eventually hear was the bolt being sheared in half.I was able to twist the broken half out of the swing arm, but there s some damage to the black paint of the swing arm on a 2018 Yamaha R6. I m going to try to get the company that makes the spools to send two more bolts, in the event it was their hardware, but I have ordered a different brand of torque wrench to try. I have a feeling it s the wrench that caused the issue, as many of the 1 star reviews mention sheared bolts and the wrench not clicking or working for very long. And that makes sense. It s $35-40 and made in Asia. If you want a quality mechanics torque wrench you probably have to man up and pay at least $150 for a CDI or $500 for a Snap On. I bought this cause I m not a full time mechanic, but I d rather not have a torque wrench than have one I can t trust to not destroy my vehicles. 1The first one i got was garbage didnt last 1 month and didnt use it all the time. Have had this for a few weeks used it only gripe is when you go to change the strength of the torque you have to keep the bottom tap moving while changing the power. Also the handle does separate from the bottom a little easier than I would like out of the box nothing a little lock tight cant fix but shouldn't need to do. In the picture the spot I am pointing to separates way too easy. Less than 30 days it broke. Boss has a harber freight over 3 years still going strong. I am going to warranty mine and hope for a better one if that one sucks too this review will stay the same, and I will be switching torch wrench brands. Also I didn't go over 40lbs before it stopped wanting to tighten at the base for the lbs. 1Failed on First Use - Awesome warranty I purchased this torque wrench in anticipation of doing my first AR build. It took almost 2 months before I had all the parts needed to put together the upper receiver and finally use this torque wrench for the first time. I set the crow foot to 90 and started off tightening the barrel nut to 35 ft. -lbs of torque and it clicked ("so far, so good"). Swapped over to my breaker bar and loosened the nut, then upped the torque setting to 45 ft. -lbs - nothing. I tried applying more force - nothing. At this point I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or the wrench stopped working. So I dropped the torque to the lowest setting - still no clicks. At this point the nut was so torqued down, my breaker bar started to bow under the pressure to loosen the nut again. So with the nervous fear of damaging the threads of my not-so-cheap upper receiver, I had to use this now defective tool to tighten the barrel nut cm by cm (not knowing if I have exceeded the maximum 80 ft. -lbs), until I had it properly timed.***UPDATE*** (5/28/17)I contacted TEKTON's support dept via email as suggested and I have to say I am very impressed by their customer service. They were quick to respond to my initial email and each followup. The warranty was honored at no cost to me and I could not be more impressed. I place a lot of value on customer service (especial post purchase) and I have a great deal of respect for any company that is willing to stand behind their product. My first wrench may have had issues, but you have to respect a company that will publicly state (and standby), "TEKTON tools are Always Guaranteed... Our guarantee has no time limits and no fine print..." For that, I had to add 3 stars 4Excellent tire lug nut torque wrench I got this wrench for torquing tire lug nuts to the proper OEM torque. This wrench is a little over 18 inches long and provides plenty of length to easily torque tire lug nuts. It is a great range for this application on normal-sized vehicles. It is a righty-tighty torque wrench and works great for what I bought it for. As others have mentioned, some bike parts are opposite of standard threading so a different torque wrench may be required for that if you want it to work out of the box. However, the internal torque head insert can be flipped to make it lefty-tighty if needed. So while it wont work for bikes other lathes out-of-the-box it can be made to work. The case that comes with the torque wrench is nice and simple and does the job of protecting the wrench. The instructions that came with the wrench were also useful. Even better, the wrench box came with a QR code printed on it that links to a Youtube video showing to use the tool. I am very impressed with all of this "extra" useful stuff that Tekton provides. I have noticed this kind of extra dedication from Tekton over multiple product lines. I look forward to using this wrench for years to come!Pros:*Easy to use for tire lug nuts*Great instructions that explain how to set the torque and use the wrench*Simple yet useful caseCons:*None so farAdditional Considerations:Be aware of the torque range provided by the wrench! If you need 0-10lbs or >150lbs you will need a different wrench.Overall: 5/5 stars (>=.5 rounds up, <.5 rounds down) => 5 starsIf you have any further questions regarding the product in my review please leave a comment below and I will get back to you as soon as possible. 5the more I like them. I took this wrench to a calibration ... The more and more I use these TEKTON tools, the more I like them. I took this wrench to a calibration station at work. Its within 1% of set torque, and after using it for about three hours solid, it maintains its calibration. Wonderful for the price, I was kind of skeptical when I bought it. I also have their 20-200 inch pound torque wrench and it performs the same as this one.Pros---Well Built. The lock in the handle has a positive grab and doesn't come loose once you set it.--Unlike many cheap tools on Amazon, this wrench is well built and the handle numbers are easy to read.--Newton Meters are printed on the back of the wrench (one scale is Ft.Lbs, flip it over, Newton Meters.)--Positive "CLICK" when preset torque is reached. No weak clicks here.Cons---The only one I could think of was the scales are etched gray into the handle. It might be a little difficult to read after awhile, or for someone with poor eyesight.Overall, great torque wrench! 5Didn't work Got this for prime day and luckily I was doing a brake replacement on my truck so decided to but this. The other reviewers are right. Mine came looking like its been used before. Scratches and marked up throughout on the item. I can get over that. What I can't get over is that it doesn't work! It doesn't click and I even tested it on a lower setting. I'm disappointed and will be returning it. Maybe you'll have better luck 1Good torque wrench for the money In order to gauge the accuracy of this torque wrench I tested it with an AC/Delco Digital Torque Adapter and compared it with a Snap-on I already owned. The AC/Delco unit was certified to be within 0.3% of actual torque. The Tekton wrench did not come with a certification as mentioned by some, but only had a sticker stating it was "certified." Straight out of the box, the Tekton was wildly inaccurate, but after exercising it a bit, it measured on the outside range of the +/- 4% specification. It generally applied about two to five percent too much torque for the setting, rarely applying too little torque. After using it a while, my observation is that it should be exercised at least five times at 50% of max torque before torquing anything. If it has been sitting overnight, exercise it again. You just have to know this should be done with click type wrenches since it is not mentioned in the operator's manual. Compared to the Snap-on wrench, I would say the Snap-on supplied more accurate and consistent results, without the need for exercising it as frequently. Of course, the Snap-on cost about 10 times as much as the Tekton. For the money, I would say it is a pretty good wrench as long as you remember to exercise it before using it each day. Don't expect the spit and polish of a Snap-on. If you want chrome, shine, and a polished finish, you will need to drop a few more dollars. 4Worthless and out of spec... Hopefully the second one does better. I saw nothing but amazing reviews about this wrench online and all over the internet. Always working on cars boats and other things I figured I d finally pick up a budget torque wrench. Well I did, I bought this one.....Well needless to say I m completly unhappy about this purchase so far. I got this wrench in mid 2017 and being a specialty item didn t get around to using it until months later after the purchase. To start I race a 600hp turbo track car I build, maintain and race my self. I needed to replace a timing chain so once done I had to break out this wrench for the first time. So I get to the first of 3 work up torques and I start stripping threads on my block and snapping bolts.Huh that s weird maybe they were one time bolts. I get the job done and move on blaming the bolts.Well my second time I needed to replace a clutch, I hit torque on most of the bolts and then I go to double check them all and some click at torque and others do almost half rotations before the tq break comes in...... They should have already been torqued the first time it clicked off...Ok so I m starting to think it s the wrench at this point. So my dad needs to tq his lug nuts on his wheels. So I help him do it to 100ft lb as recommended. 3 months later he tells me his wheel is shaking. I look, half of the bolts have come loose. This POS can t even wrench on lug nuts, god forbid I do my engine block and piston upgrade worth $3,000 in parts I was going to do this weekend.Long story short I m sending this POS back hoping it s just a defective wrench. I m ordering a second with better hopes. But for now 2 Stars is all this gets.If the second one is trash I m giving it one and never looking at this brand again. I ll spend the extra money. 2Item does not have 4% accuracy through the entire range. I work in calibration lab so when I received this torque wrench I took it into work to verify if the accuracy was indeed 4%. The torque wrench was not accurate to 4% in the lower ranges. The torque wrench also is not properly aligned as far as readings go. It is actually 10FtLb over what you would think it would be when you set it. I am just doing a 1 for 1 swap for another torque wrench. I will also be testing the new one that I receive to verify that I am getting what I pay for. 1
