Customer Reviews

It works with iPad Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter! I bought this for my audio/midi setup with my iPad and it works perfectly. I was able to power 3 devices without powering the USB hub itself, but the iPad battery was draining fast and you could tell it was straining when powering up the 3rd device. Fortunately, I bought the Sabrent hub that includes the power adapter and decided to hook the power up. Once I powered the hub itself there wasn't any more straining when turning on the 3rd usb device. Oddly, the iPad battery still drains when all 3 USB ports are turned on. Fortunately, the Sabrent has power switches for each port and if I turn off two of them, the iPad still charges. Definitely glad I got a hub with switches on each port! 54 Stars for HB-UMP3 and 5 STARS for Sabrent Tech Support Team I have a Mac Book Pro running windows and needed more USB ports. I routinely connect internal drives via USB to my laptop for recovering data, so I wanted something with more power than the standard USB port connection power. After researching online I purchased this Sabrent 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub with included 5V/2.5A power adapter (HB-UMP3) on February 9, 2016. In addition to the reviews for this product I also own other Sabrent products I am happy with giving me comfort for their name and their product line.I was not disappointed in my HB-UMP3. My only negative about the HB-UMP3 are the Individual Power Switches and LEDs. I feel like this is an unnecessary feature adding another breaking point to the unit. I would have preferred the USB ports on the switch all be active, but can also appreciate the ability to disable if that helps give power to the active USB ports. This HB-UMP3 has worked perfectly for me and my needs UNTIL it quit working in April, 2017. I could not readily identify the warranty, so I logged a tech support ticket on the Sabrent website on April 30, 2017. They asked for a copy of the PO, which was easy to supply since I purchased it through Amazon. After supplying the PO I received a replacement unit at no charge to me within days.I would have given this unit 5 stars had it not stopped working one year and 2 months after the original purchase. I can give the Sabrent tech support team 5 stars for the quick and easy customer service to provide me a replacement unit and standing behind their product. 4Failure after 6 months. I hooked this up to a Raspberry Pi to provide a powered option for external hard drives. I liked the idea of switches on each port as I live on a boat and this gave me the option to switch off things that I wasn't using frequently without having to pull the plug and have a loose wire hanging around. The product just didn't last, but it did trick me into thinking it did.6 months after I got it, one of my external drives started to make an odd clicking noise. If I unplugged the drive and plugged it back in, it would go away for a while. I plugged the hub into my laptop for a day and the same thing happened. My thought was that this drive was going bad. I had another drive also hooked up to the hub that wasn't having any issues. So I bought a new drive. Swapping 3TB of info between drives took over a day and my laptop was pretty much unusable during that time. What does this have to do with the hub? Fast forward another 6 months ...I started hearing the clicking again. I had actually plugged the other drive in a week prior as I accidentally deleted something off the new drive that I needed. No big deal. I unplug the old drive. Clicking noise continued. It was the new drive. Plugged into a different port than the old one used to be. I couldn't believe my bad luck. I plugged the hub into my laptop again and after a few hours got the same thing, and I couldn't even access the drive anymore. On a whim I unplugged the hub and plugged the drive directly into the laptop hoping maybe I didn't lose all my data. And then ... no issues. For over a week. No clicking. No need to transfer anything. In essence, the hub itself was slowly dying. Cost me the better part of 2 days and a $120 drive. I bought a different 7 port powered hub, without switches. Different brand. I've had no issues with the old drive or the new drive for several months. I don't know if the switches cause the issue, or if it's the brand. Sure, I have an extra drive that's perfectly fine now, but that was 2 days of my life that I'll never get back. 1Suggest getting the power supply Its OK. The way the LEDS light you may think one is on that is not. There is a white plastic frame that is around the switch buttons that diffuse the light from a blue LED under it. So, at least on mine, the blue light bleeds onto the white plastic frame of the switch next to it. I got the power supply. Without it, my HDD did not work on all slots. This was with it plugged in by itself - nothing else drawing power. With the power supply this I think the problem went away. I wish it had a more flexible cord, the stiff cord pushes the hub out and makes it look cluttered. So, it works, but nothing to write home about 3What a difference a POWERED USB hub makes! I was having endless problems with my Macbook and its lack of USB pots. I had a few unpowered USB hubs but the lag and intermittent functioning made my life miserable. I had a Bamboo pen tablet and a wireless mouse plugged in, but also my wired headset, and two external monitors. The Macbook could handle all of this, but with the extra demands of two external monitors the one Macbook USB port all of this data was flowing through was choking the entire system. I had only heard of "powered USB hubs" a few times and they seemed like a stupid idea (like I actually know anything about computers after almost 4 decades). Wow was I wrong. I bough this because it was cheap and had a cray amount of positive reviews. I knew instantly (within 5 minutes of testing) that this was EXACTLY what I needed.Okay, so as to the brand (Sabrent). never heard of them. I like the buttons to turn off each USB port individually. I have my pen tablet plugged in but turned off (except when I am using it) by poking a button on the top of this hub. This prevents the Macbook trackpad or external bluetooth mouse from fighting with the pen tablet (in case I wave my hand over the pen tablet by mistake). I suppose I could have two microphones, or two or three of anything and just turn on the port of the one I want to use. The "on/off" buttons for each port really allow you to be creative with what you want to do with this. In fact I read in the manual that you can daisy chain over 100 ports (25+ hubs) if you had an impossibly large number of USB devices you wanted to have instant access to. I am glad I didn't get a USB hub that does not allow me to turn off or on ports instantly. I have seen the light and feel compelled to sing the praises of this wondrous invention. I am also feeling kind o stupid for doubting the awesomeness of a powered USB hub in the first place. Anyway, i hope this helps. Thanks for reading it. 5Great product for both macOS and Windows devices! I bought two for my 2015 MacBook Pro w/ Retina (2x USB 3.0 Type-A ports) as well as one for my wife's 2016 Lenova Yoga (1x USB 3.0 Type-A port). At any given time I have a mouse, two external HDs (Silicon Power Armor 2TB and a Seagate Portable 2TB), thumb drives (PNY Turbo Attach 256GB), as well as charging cables for various cell phones (iPhone 6 Plus and some Kyocera 3G flip-phone), noise-cancelling ear buds (Bose QuietComfort 20), a universal card readers (Acuvar All-in-one), etc. I have not had any issues with the product thus far. I'm able to move files back and forth between the various external storage media as well as the macOS El Capitan and Windows 10 virtual portions without issue. My only regret is not checking to see if the manufacturer had an item with more than 4 ports...which is why I bought two for my MacBook Pro in the first place! :-) 5Great solid hub and features at a cheap price. This product works great. Like another reviewer mentioned, there are times where coming out of sleep and it is powered, it requires unplugging and plugging back in for the system to detect it. Normally it would be a negative but it happens. Formerly in IT responsible for approving products, there is no perfect product because of the huge amount of possible combinations out there and it shows in product reviews of the product because you will hear of the one combination that did not work. The hub has no problems with 2 other DELLs, 1 HP Envy, or a Lenovo laptop and a dozen desktops just this oddball Spectre.Back to the review:This product works well and the individual buttons are quite helpful. For those really picky about build quality, the blue LED light is only bright on the side facing the ports but the clear ring circles the buttons. The buttons have a little more play than buttons on a PS4/xbox controller. We have 2.5 of these (more later) and the male and female plugs are snug and solid feeling. They all come with unique serial numbers and has a decent build feel to it. The use of the buttons helps wear and tear on cords and plugs since I don't have to pull out USB units I am not using. Since I travel and this laptop, keyboard, mouse, fan, etc. is my primary computer, this inexpensive feature saves wear and tear on $1000+ of equipment. My personal experience is that keeping things on when you don't need them puts more wear and tear on the device and the laptop's circuitry. Another nice feature is that the hub works with or without the power plug. If you just need usb power for your fans without hooking it to a computer, you can use it unplugged. If there is enough power for the ports, there is no voltage/amp difference on which port you plug it into which is a problem on cheaper hubs. (Tested with multimeter)About the 2.5 units, the first one I received threw error messages on my HP Spectre, At that time, I got an email for a review from Sabrent and although I wasn't sure about cause of the problem, they quickly sent me a replacement. The problem was the power brick but I got the replacement with almost no downtime.Pro:Individual buttons helps fine tune power useCan be used as passive power or with optional AC power for devices needing more powerLight on active port(s) right on button so you know at a glance versus others on the side or just one light overallGreat customer service (May 2017)Con:For the HP Spectre, waking up from sleep sometimes requires reseating plug, not a problem if powering offLights around button could be more uniform but I'd rather have something than nothing 5Lack of information of product function causes unnecessary return. Friday I needlessly returned this product as defective because when I plugged it into the power adapter the individual port indicator LED's only lit for ports 2,3, and 4 when the corresponding button was depressed. I incorrectly assumed that the device was faulty and asked for an exchange which was thoughtfully overnighted to me. Imagine my dismay when exactly the same thing occurred with the replacement. I had not even bothered to connect the first unit to a USB port because the indicator LED for port 1 didn't light. This time I was curious to see if port 1 would even be recognized when the device was plugged into a USB port and a flash drive installed. I plugged the device into a USB port, depressed the button for port 1 and it's LED lit up. Apparently when connected to the power adapter alone the port 1 LED does not light up and unlike ports 2,3, and 4, only lights up when the device is connected to an active USB port on a powered up machine. It would be nice if that little tidbit of information was contained in a small explanatory note. It would have saved a great deal of time and frustration for both myself and the Amazon rep. I spoke to. Absent information to the contrary one would naturally expect all 4 ports to behave the same at all times. The manufacturers are making things needlessly difficult for themselves, their distributors and end users by omitting any helpful hints in their packaging. Further experimentation has revealed that port 1 does nor receive any power from the power adapter, only from the USB port it's connected to. One of the reasons I purchased a USB hub with a power adapter was so I could charge USB devices without having to have my computer powered up; examples being my Bluetooth headset for Dragon and a flash drive audio recorder. It's nice to be able to charge these devices without the computer running, just don't try and do it on port 1, it won't work. 4Well - kinda but not quite hardly... But okay I suppose. I love the idea of being able to switch the ports on and off without having to disconnect the devices... And for all intents and purposes it works just fine. However, this is supposed to support USB 3.0 - I can't get it to. It's plugged into a 3.0 port on the computer - but if I plug in a 3.0 device into one of its 4 ports my operating system tells me the device can perform better when connected to a 3.0 port. If I remove the Sabrent switch from the equation and plug said device directly in - it works at 3.0 speed. Putting the Sabrent back in-between the device and the computer brings the data transfer speeds back down to 2.0 levels. So if you don't mind waiting. Go for the convenience of the switch. If you do - go with something else. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate BTW. And I've looked for drivers for the hub just in case there was such a thing. Nothing found on the Sabrent website... 3Would be perfect except for a short USB cable and no spacing between ports This low-profile, 4-port hub is just what you'd expect. Plug-and-play setup and USB 3.0 speed make it a great port to expand the available USB ports on your computer (my Lenovo had just 2, inexcusable, and this was a necessity). Getting it with the AC power cord means I don't have to worry about powering backup drives (I have two) off a single laptop port. The individual power switches are not really needed but a nice touch nonetheless. So why just 4 stars? Two reasons. First, the USB cable from the hub to the computer is short. Too short. You may think that 8 inches is long enough, but it isn't. Between the power cord and the USB cord, it means I can't "hide" this hub away from my working space on my desk. And second, this is so small (yes, I love low profile, but I'm talking distance side-to-side between ports) that those wide USB flash drives (I'm looking at you Patriot!) will not fit side by side here. You get the width of the USB plug and that's about it.If you're just connecting peripherals like a mouse, keyboard, and maybe some backup drives, this is great. I mean, really great. But not accommodating wide USB flash drives and that short cord to the computer are bummers. I like it a lot, just wish I could love it. 4
