Does what it needs to, but has some serious drawbacksI waffled back and forth over how to rate this item, and eventually settled on an average score. For me, this item does exactly what I need it to do, but some of the features didn't live up to their potential and might be deal breakers for other purchasers.I have a laptop that lives on my bed. I watch movies on it as I'm falling asleep. It's an older cheaper model, so it gets really warm, especially when engulfed in blankets. I needed something that would lift my laptop off the comforter and cool it down. This cooling pad does exactly that.I had read other reviews, so I knew going in that the lights and the fans were not on separate controls. If the fan is on, the light is on. This feature makes me sad, because I didn't realize just how bright the lights would be in a dark bedroom with white walls (see attached image.) Since the lifting off the surface provides enough ventilation for my laptop to not overheat, I don't need the fans on 24/7. I also can fall asleep in a room that isn't pitch black. Be aware - the lights are pretty bright.I have 2 external hard drives with media on them, and my original plan was to plug them into the 2 USB connections on the back of the laptop pad. Imagine my surprise when that didn't work at all. I checked the instructions, and discovered that this item uses a LOT of USB power. When this is plugged into a laptop, you might be able to use a mouse or keyboard with it (although I didn't try either). You definitely CANNOT use an external HD with it. This would have made me very sad, except that I have numerous different USB power sources, so I used a device with a long cord that plugs into the wall and simultaneously charges 4 USB devices to power the cooling fan. It works great, and I don't need to plug anything into the 2 USB connections on the laptop pad. Instead, I plugged my HD's directly into my computer, which is totally capable of powering them when the cooling pad isn't plugged in and stealing all the power.I definitely recommend using external power, which is fairly easy to come by since almost every phone charger has a USB input nowadays. The only downside to that is that the cord isn't very long, so you either need a USB extension cord or a charger with a long cord. Or you need to keep this device really close to an outlet.As for the function of the device, it works great. The fans are powerful enough to keep my laptop nice and cool, and if I run them during the day I can turn them off at night if the blue light is bothering me. Setup was simple, the size is perfect, and the little feet that keep the laptop from sliding off are strong enough to work on my not-so-thin not-so-light laptop. I also like that the height is adjustable, although once I found the angle I liked I didn't change it. My laptop (and my comforter) are no longer hot to the touch, which was a huge issue before purchasing this item.If you don't need the USB connections and you don't care about the light, this item is awesome. Otherwise, it might be extremely disappointing.3Amazing Customer Service/Does not fit a 17inch laptop***UPDATE***Kootek contacted me regarding my experience with the product and offered me a full refund, in which I received a few days after. Even though this product did not meet my needs nor fit my laptop, see review below, the customer service was the best it could be. I will definitely purchase more products from Kootek as they stand by their word when it comes to customer satisfaction. Very great company!!!This does not fit a 17 inch laptop. I have a 17.3 inch laptop and it hangs off of the side of this thing about an inch on each side and about a half inch in the back. In regards to using it as just a stand, it's solid. Very well built and sturdy and the metal leg is pretty strong... so speaking from that aspect it works great as a stand. In regards to it's ability to cool a laptop. ehhh it's pretty garbage. The fan speed is way too slow to pump enough air into the bottom of the machine. My laptop fans starve when they get above 50% speed... it's like the stand fans aren't moving enough air into my laptop and it sounds my like my laptop is making the stand fans work faster just from begging for more air. My laptop actually runs cooler with the fans turned off. Good looking product, great feel and it is very sturdy... but the fans do nothing but take up a USB port and make my machine run hotter.I'm using an Eluktronics PA71 17.3 inch gaming laptop with a GTX 1070 and a i7-7700Hq processor. It's a 17.3 inch Clevo chasis, which is used in various other brands of gaming laptops. I would try to find something a little bigger for anything over a 15inch laptop.I may return this just because I can get a laptop stand for half the price. I'll give it another week or so.2Only worked for one week but they made it goodthis item ran for one week and then the fans quit working. I have tried to make this work a couple of times with no luck. I am very disappointed and will return this to Amazon for a refund.UPDATE: the mfg's customer service team has contacted me for follow up regarding the problem with the cooling pad. they were very concerned and expressed a commitment to customer satisfaction. They are working to address my concerns.Further update: the mfg was very concerned about the problem. They sent me a replacement at no charge. The replacement was a new model. The power cord was no longer wired directly to the fans. Instead it connects to one of the two usb ports. I feel this will correct the issue with the cord pulling loose.The fans cool well. I am very pleased with the focus the mfg has for customer satisfaction. I am changing my rating to 5 stars.5Great product!This review comes after one month of using the Kootek Laptop Cooling Pad 12"-17" Cooler Pad.As far as I can tell, when I turn on both buttons (activating all of the fans), this unit can cool my CPU and GPU from 1-3 degrees Fahrenheit, which feels significant as you approach higher temperature. The adjustable and lockable angle is a nice feature when moving from surface to surface. The unit does not seem to affect power drain significantly, as I haven't noticed a significant drop in battery life when I use the pad vs. when I'm not using the pad.The light is a nice aesthetic feature, not strong enough to illuminate much. That said, I do wish one of the buttons turned the light off.I bought this for a heavier laptop unit, and the only complaint I have is that the base frame can feel weak if you're lifting it from the base only, as if it was going to snap. Make sure you lift it carefully if you have a weighty laptop.Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this product. I'll update my review as appropriate if I run into any longevity issues.4Fantastic, especially for larger laptops!I have a pretty big laptop-- 17.5" which is bigger than the average 12-15" size. Finding any type of accessory for this laptop is a bit of a task, and I was skeptical about ordering this cooling pad because I haven't had too many good experiences with cooling pads and laptops in the past. However, I definitely needed one for my new laptop and someone else said this fit their large laptop comfortably, and another one said that their daughter uses it just fine in the comfort of her bed (which is what I also do, so I needed something that wouldn't be awful on my legs or on the rumbled blankets) and honestly, I'm very impressed!The lights aren't bright at all, or distracting. There are TWO sets of fans you can use- the big middle one, or the four mini ones. You can use one, or the other, or both at the same time, or neither if you so choose. There's no way to deactivate the lights apart from the fans but thankfully none of that bothers me. It's not horribly loud either, and the angle is adjustable and it has two little catchers on the front that aren't invasive or annoying at all!This is honestly one of the best products I've received from Amazon. I highly recommend this for larger laptops.5This thing is working great. And the laptop is wider than the cooling pad even though the cooling pad is advertised to fit 17 inch laptops1Amazing Product Best Cooling Pad for my MSI GE72 17.5' laptop. This is the cooling pad I found with the most fans and this thing is a beast. Significant differences in Core Temps after turning the cooling pad on. Only complaint is that for example my msi's CPU and Gpu are closer to the center to the top so it's a bit above the center fan but I just lowered the pegs and have my laptop sitting a little lower on the cooling pad. Iv attatched a video comparison between this cooling pad and the targus chill mat + which was $50EDIT: Already broke less than 1 month with it... very disappointing. the fan in the center still works but the top right fan makes a terrible screeching sound. was very happy with this product on the first day but 1 month isnt long enough for something like this to break..5Actually really good, very pleasedI get nervous buying cheap plastic products online. So I am doing this review do help others. This product works great. I like the option of being able to turn on just the 4 outside fans or just the middle or to have all on at same time. it's relatively quiet, although I do notice it hum in the background as you would expect with any fan motor, my customers on the phone can't hear it through the phone so I'm ok. I like this size so it's compatible with all size computers. This product works as advertised, with no problems, and is actually more durable than I expected. Works great. I recommend this brand of product.510/10 ReccommendNifty cooler. It adjusts as the picture shows and has little stoppers to prevent the laptop from slipping off. The fans are quiet and there are two switches in the back that control the fans, so you don't have to have all five going. Great value for the price. The last cooler I had finally died after having it for 5 years and I'm hoping I get the same life out of this one.5
