Description

Product Description A moving novel of sisterhood and finding yourself tells the story of a newly engaged woman who decides to use her engagement party as a way to reconcile her estranged sisters—much to their chagrin. Courtney, Norah, and Raine Cassel are as different as three sisters can be. Norah, the oldest, is a type A obsessive who hasn't forgiven Raine, the middle sister, for ruining her wedding day six years ago. Raine is Norah's opposite, a wild child/performance artist/follow-your-bliss hippie chick who ran off to California. The only thing the two have in common is their ability to drive Courtney, their youngest sister, crazy. When her longtime boyfriend proposes, Courtney decides it's finally time to call a truce and bring the three sisters together. After all, they're grown-ups now, right? But it turns out that family ghosts aren't easily defeated—and neither are first loves. Soon Courtney finds herself reexamining every choice she has made in the past six years—including the man she's about to marry—and the value of reconnecting with the sisters she knows she needs, in spite of everything. From Publishers Weekly In this witty novel by the author of Frenemies, Philadelphia cellist Courtney Cassel decides the occasion of her engagement is the perfect time to heal family wounds. Six years ago, wild-child middle sister Raine ruined oldest sister Norah's wedding and ran off with longtime friend Matt Cheney, with whom Courtney was having a secret affair. Accompanying her supportive fiancé, Lucas, on a business trip to San Francisco, Courtney drops in on Raine unannounced and discovers Raine is still with the smoldering, charismatic Matt, whose mere presence can still reduce Courtney to the emotional state of an adolescent. Soon, Courtney's questioning every choice she's made. When Matt and Raine show up for the engagement party, scores are settled, lives are examined and a few secrets about strait-laced Norah come to light. Crane's brisk voice and knack for finding the humor in Courtney's angst keep the mood upbeat all the way to the rosy resolution. (Apr.) Wonderful news, accept for one hitch: her family is not speaking. Six years ago, her artsy, spacey sister, Raine, ran away to California hours after delivering a hateful speech at eldest sister Norah’s wedding. The fact that Norah is a prissy type-A personality fuels the feud, and Courtney, the youngest, is dragged into the center. Before she marries her charming, stalwart fiancé, she wants to mend the past. But there is one more complication: when Raine ran off to San Francisco, she took Matt Cheney—he of the brooding good looks, dragon tattoo, and untapped musical talent—with her, interrupting a secret summer love affair. Courtney thinks she is over him, but when she travels west to make amends, the devil from her past opens the door. Between brokering a reconciliation, navigating latent feelings of unexpected lust, and trying to plan a wedding, this lovable, candid, and often droll heroine finds her voice, gets a grip, and learns how to stand up to her sisters. Delightful fun from the author of Frenemies (2007). --Emily Cook About the Author Megan Crane grew up in New Jersey, graduated from Vassar, and got her MA and PhD in literature from the University of York in England. THE ROLES THAT DEFINE US....In the pages of this delightfully charming and true-to-life book about sisters and the ties that bind them, as well as the secrets and betrayals that separate them, I came to feel what it must be like to have sisters.I only had one, and she was so much younger that she didn't feel like a sibling. But despite my own experience, I could connect to these characters and almost feel what they were feeling.Names My Sisters Call Me was all about disappointments, misunderstandings, misconceptions, and the yawning years that grow after horrendous events that pull a family apart.Norah, Raine, and Courtney have their roles in this family, and they stick to them with a fierceness that tells us a lot about how one's place in the family seemingly defines us.But what will happen when the prodigal daughter comes home for another family wedding? Will the hard truths that separated them all years before intrude again? Or will a new understanding bring out a better version of these young women? And how will an abruptly ended love affair bring unexpected drama into one young woman's new life?Parts of this story were so beautifully wrought, like the vivid San Francisco settings, that I could literally feel myself there. I could sense the pull of this vibrant place upon Courtney, who went there to "retrieve" her prodigal sister.I also enjoyed a description in the book about what heartbreak feels like; a moment that captured Courtney's feelings of loss and betrayal about her once-upon-a-time lover Matt."How could he look exactly the same as he always did? How could he so nonchalantly shatter all the things I'd believed and bear no outward sign of it? I didn't understand. It seemed to me that if someone hurt you, there should be some kind of boomerang effect. They should get hit with it, too, so it wasn't just you. So they didn't get off scot-free while you marinated in the pain."I gave four stars to this wonderfully enjoyable read. 4If you love women's fiction - THIS is your book! There's this certain selection of books in my bookworm heart that are deemed the highest of the high. It's where the stories I love, characters that I can instantly click with get to go. Names My Sisters Call Me is the newest edition to that collection. Here's the thing about sisters, don't ever open your mouth unless it's your own. I know this because I am a sister. Wow. Wow. Wow. Did I ever love this book. Family dynamics are always a favorite, but this time the love story wasn't some secondary part. It was a true mix of life and all the steps it takes you. I loved every minute of it. I could relate to Courtney on so many levels, and it's why I had no problem almost hating her when I thought she was about to ruin something she couldn't even see. Newly engaged, all she wants is to bring her family who is pretty messed up in their own sense back together for her wedding to Lucas. What she doesn't expect is to find out the harsh reality of their feelings and let alone her own.The sisters infuriated me and yet I understood them. First love, Matt freaking Cheney, who broke Courtney's heart when he took off six years ago might as well been the Devil, yet I secretly couldn't wait for him to show back in the story. We all know how those jerks of a first love go. The best person to tell you how entirely stupid you're being is always going to be your best friend. In this case Verena was that friend, and boy is she hilarious! She reminds me of my own best friend who has no problem at all telling me how big of a jackass I'm being. But all along there was Lucas. Strong, reasonable Lucas who has always seen Courtney for who she was. Sweet lord have mercy where can I find a Lucas for myself?! No, this isn't the type of story where the girl suddenly finds herself when she finds the guy. Or finds herself because she has TWO guys to deal with. The guy found her long ago, and it was really up to her to realize how her life should be. I easily found myself slipping into the story, being able to block out the world around me, and it hasn't been easy for me to do that in a while when it comes to books. In some ways, I knew this story because I've made choices Courtney had made, and I was very pleased to see the end results of hers because it was very realistic. It's official. Megan Crane is on my all-time favorite authors list. I envy her writing abilities like nobody's business and wish I had some of her talent. 5Some very funny partsI had no idea what to expect from this book. I bought it because of the cover... yes, I judge a book by its cover, don't judge me! and never had read anything by Megan Crane before.I like her writing. The story is funny, witty, but the familiar drama was getting to me. Although I too would despise it if my sister ruined my wedding for me, 6 years is a long time holding a grudge, jeez. Talk about it with her or with your therapist and get over it already.. but then again, I dont have and never had that type of family drama... maybe I would never talk to my sister again if she had ruined my big day, who knows.I had a feeling Raine was not what Court had expected, she had that idealized person in her head and you kind of see that coming...Matt Cheney is a stupid, egotistic jerk. It doesn't matter how hot your tattoo is or how beautifully your green eyes shine... there is only one word to a guy who bangs 2 sisters at once... a**hole.Lucas was too understanding, too sincere, and too perfect. #sigh I want to say he was too too much but I still like him and he was probably the main reason I liked the book, he was the therapist we all would love to talk to once in a while, but will never do because he was created from the depths of the imaginative mind of Megan Crane and we all hate her because he is not real!!! 3Names My Sisters Call MeAwesome book from Megan Crane. It made me think, reminisce, feel, and cry quite a bit. A really good sister book. 5Five StarsLoved it. Sweet, messy sisterly love 5Book received on KindleThis was a very good book and I enjoyed reading it on my kindle. Receiving book on kindle is great! 4good.....not greatDefinitely a coming of age type book....a journey of bringing family back together under some pretty stressful terms. I really liked how each character was developed and you are able to empathize with most of them. Overall a pretty good book 3Couldn't put it down. This book was one of those where you can really relate - real characters, a gripping theme and an overall interesting read. I reallyl enjoyed it. 5I REALLY JUST FOUND THIS BOOK FAIR NOT GOOD NOT BAD NOTHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT.THIS WASN'T A VERY GOOD BOOK I FOUND IT BORING, AND DULL AND NOT A GOOD STORY LINE. WHO CARES WHAT NAMES HER SISTERS CALLED HER. I DIDN'T CARE WHAT HER SISTERS. CALLED HER. HOHUM. JUST ANOTHER SAME OLD POLT NOVEL, I DIDN'T LIKE IT. 3Very Satisfying ReadNora, Raine and Courtney are three sisters who have been estranged for the past six years, when Raine ruined Nora's wedding and then ran off with Matt, her best friend and Courtney's secret lover. Now Courtney has gotten engaged and with boyfriend Lucas in tow is off to California to try and patch things up with Raine. Much to her surprise Matt and Raine are still living together and Courtney finds herself still harboring an attraction to him.Soon after Lucas and Courtney return home to start planning their wedding Raine and Matt show up, opening up a hornets' nest of trouble. Secrets are revealed, old wounds are opened and scores are settled as the three sisters try to work out their feelings for one another.Funny, sad and very real this book touched on a lot of the emotions and feelings that sisters and family have for one another, and how we all seem to always revert to our long established family roles when we are thrown together. Crisp writing, great characters and a realistic story line made this a really satisfying read. 4
