Description

Discovering how a once-ornery theater worker became a crispy corpse with a missing arm ranks on Denton Rourke's, "Things I'd love to do" list slightly below having his wisdom teeth removed with a shovel. But when Denton is offered actual money to assist, the community college teacher by day and amateur detective by whenever it suits him agrees to investigate the scene of the crime: an aging yet historic concert venue. Surprisingly, Denton's first major case doesn't spin out of control for almost an entire afternoon. Then a powerful talent manager insists on an overly rapid resolution so his legendary band can play the theater without the minor inconvenience of being killed, and a pair of obtuse thugs with their own agenda stop by to visit. And to ensure complete chaos, Denton's long-time, fantastic girlfriend wrinkles his personal life by reaching her limit on giving affection to an emotional klutz with the romantic instincts of a frozen waffle. As the body count rises, the loveable yet infuriating sleuth must control his mercurial demeanor and acerbic tongue as he evades inept goons, outwits home appliances, frees large, cranky birds, and tries to stop a madman's unthinkable scheme. Then if he has time (and isn't dead), Denton Rourke must convince the love of his life that he really is worth the effort. Which task will prove the most impossible is anyone's guess.

Customer Reviews

Beautifully crafted, creativeI couldn't put this book down.....others would have stolen it and they should buy their own and make the author the millionaire he deserves to be. Beautifully crafted, creative, entertaining, funny, witty, intelligent....and that is just the cover. The book itself is a masterpiece. 5A must read from a great new author! The well written characters, fast paced dialogue and hilarious situations (I've never rooted for an ostrich before) made this a book I couldn't put down. It's a fantastic murder mystery with wonderfully humorous twists. Ian O'Regan has written a smart, witty, charming, laugh out loud book. I can't wait for the next one! 5Excellent Read!! Highly Recommend!!What a great book. Ian O'Regan introduces a cast of likable and realistic characters intertwining them into intriguing mystery that will keep you glued to the pages. I literally found myself laughing out loud at the situations some of the characters find themselves. Well written, excellent flow and interesting plot.Well done! 5You'll be smarter for having read this book!My two favorite things about this book: 1) what a great use of the English language! I love how the author writes with such an extensive vocabulary...I honestly feel smarter after having read this book. I also love how the author pokes fun at poor grammar/spelling in various situations throughout the book. Hilarious! 2) The main character, Denton Rourke, is a phenomenal smart aleck. Love it! I look forward to more of this character's antics. 5Hilarious Whodunit!Great read!! I found it to be a classic whodunit story with an EXTREMELY creative and witty delivery. It's hard-boiled-'noir' in parts, gruesome and bloody in other parts, and side splittingly HILARIOUS throughout. It's a true page-turner in every sense. I'm looking forward to more Denton Rourke capers! 5RQM2Great read! Just a lot of fun. The story is interesting and quickly hooks you. The author does a great job creating a fascinating mystery with very compelling characters. Looking forward to the next book in what I hope is a long series. A must read. 5Awesome!If you're a fan of Damon Runyon, you'll love Ian O'Regan! Having read other reviews, I have to agree that the sooner Mr. O'Regan writes another one, the better.A must buy, no matter what genre of mysteries you like. 5Entertaining ReadGood read! I found this book entertaining and funny. I enjoyed the mystery and that it wasn't glaringly obvious like some mysteries can be. Looking forward to reading more from this author. 5Like Sudoku In Novel FormI am amazed by this book! It was an awesome read!! Relaxing, yet at the same time it kept my mind alert as it delighted in each twisty-turny sentence and slightly off-beat humor. To take the words right off the page, "To make an effective contrast between [this book and any best-seller by a nationally recognized author], one must try to imagine the subtle differences between sitting in a nice restaurant enjoying a steak and sitting in a musty barn being kicked in the face by a cow." (This book is the nice restaurant.) The characters were so enjoyable; I mean, who doesn't love a guy who loves Boston Cream pie! 5Delightful and Spell-Binding Read!I am so pleased that I happened to find this book! I read a lot and sometimes, I want a book that has substance, but is light and fun and hard to put down. I found For Whom the Curtain Calls to be just such a book! Super characters...well-defined and interesting. A plot that has more twists than a plate of spaghetti. Quirky turns and laugh out loud moments....a wonderful surprise of a thrill ride. All the way through, you'll wonder "who-did-it?" and you'll just love the way it resolves itself. I wish this author had more books to read now, but for now I'll be waiting and hoping.I am sure you'll love it! 5
