Customer Reviews

Inexpensive solution for an overheating receiverI was having problems with the video circuit in my aging Onkyo receiver; the picture would cut in and out after a few minutes of viewing. Even though it wasn't inside a cabinet, the amplifier section was always quite hot to the touch. (I blame the cats for regularly napping on top of it when they got chilly when I wasn't around, and clogging it up with fur.) This fan was my inexpensive solution. I plugged it into the USB port on the front of the receiver, placed it over the amplifier section with the fan pointing up (pulling cool air into the receiver from the side and back over the amplifier section, and exhausting hot air out of the receiver), and the problem went away. The USB port has power even when the receiver is off, so the fan runs all the time. The only way I can tell is because the blades are moving; it's that quiet. 5This product is cool.Have a Home Theater cabinet where I keep my PC, Wii, Pioneer VSX 1018AH receiver, Maxtor External HD, Time Warner cable receiver, blu-ray player and my Sony SACD player. The rack has glass doors but needless to say I had to leave them open whenever I was doing anything. Now, this is no longer necessary. Noise levels have dropped to the point I can barely hear the system at all. Music blasting and the whole cabinet is at a balmy 60 degrees. Awesome purchase, would recommend it to anyone. Keep in mind that the bulk of the fan is designed to stay outside the cabinet, finished pattern surface towards the inside so it is flush and does not take space inside the cabinet. Also, make sure you have a return vent as well to allow for air flow. This sucker is BIG, bigger than I thought, which is a good thing! Fairly well built. Easy to install but I would draw a template on paper, transfer it to the surface and, if it is the standard furniture cabinet material, a Stanley utility knife will make quick work of cutting the appropriate orifice. 5Awesome little package!Wife made me hide all my A/V equipment into a little cabinet. Just as I thought, even though I drilled vent holes in the back, the temps inside got to be pretty hot, to the point that the equipment was burning hot to the the touch. I tried optimizing the airflow, spacing out doors, making sure there were vent holes on the bottom and top but to no avail.Decided to install cooling fans and quickly found this setup. Ordered with Amazon prime and had the fans 2 days later.Install was a piece of cake and they are silent as the description says. In a few minutes after I plugged the fans in, I tested the temps inside and it was cool! Now several days later, the equipment is cool to the touch. Even my wife commented, hey I noticed it's not hot inside the cabinet anymore, did you do something?Need I say more?! 5Very Quiet. 3-Year Warranty.I installed this fan in my enclosed entertainment center. I'm quite pleased with it.Pros:- 3-year replacement warranty.- Almost silent in operation. At 44 CFM, it's enough to cycle the air in my cabinet about 5 times per minute.- A complete kit for a clean, finished installation. All necessary parts included.- Unlike what's pictured, mine came with a pass-through USB plug. I suspect it's the same fan Coolerguy's sells separately: Coolerguys 120x120x25mm USB Fan with Grill.- The metal mounting plate is nicely finished and textured.Cons:- Does not come with installation instructions. The enclosed parts sheet has a link to a generic installation instruction sheet.- The USB cord is only about 24" long. I guess that's a pro and a con. It's a pro if I'm going to put it very close to the power source--say, underneath a Western Digital media player. In my case, it's a con because I want the fan--which is installed in my entertainment center--to turn on when my TV turns on. However, the TV's USB outlet is a good 4 feet away from the fan, so I had to buy a USB extension cord to make it work.- If you plan to lay this fan on something ,the little stick-on foam feet are a little cheap as compared to the robust rubber feet in other kits like the 120mm Dual Ball Bearing USB Powered Case Fan. 5Design Flaw with WiresWhoever built this never used it. There are notches in the fan frames on each side. The wire comes out of the out flow side and the notches should allow it to pass through the frames and continue into the cabinet. However, only the thin unshielded part of the wire can fit into the notch. But that part of the wire is too short to reach the notch. It won t stretch and I can t cram the thicker part of the wire into the notch. To make this work I d have to cut the wire and splice in one that is a half an inch longer. Or I could shave the notch larger. Not happening. This one is going back.**Update**The company got back to me and explained that the flaw was due to the frames being designed for a different power source with smaller diameter wires. They instructed me to slice the notch larger to accommodate the larger wires. This worked for me. Be prepared to do this if you purchase the USB powered version. Added a star for customer service. 2Great for litter boxes tooI used this for the Scoop Free Litter Box. It helps the litter crystals last longer if you put a fan in the litter box and have it blow air over the litter crystals. I needed a quiet fan or else it might scare the cat. I can't hear the fan from six inches away so it is very quiet. I cut a 4.5" hole in the back of the box and mounted the fan. It works perfectly. Enough air to help desiccate the wastes and evaporate the water but not so much that it makes the cat nervous.I had plenty of extra USB AC adapters so finding an unused one was no problem.I now have one of the highest tech litter boxes on earth.I'm sure it will work well on electronics also. 5Moves a decent amount of air.Works Great! I hooked it up to my Pioneer Amplifier to help keep it cool. Haven't had any issues. Without this, my entertainment console gets very hot, and makes me uneasy about my amplifier overheating. This fan helps move air out of the console.Decent quality. One of the solder joints was a bit loose. During my testing (not even the installation), the wire broke off the solder joint. Coolerguys responded quickly and offered to replace the unit. I was able to get into the joint, and re-solder the joint, so I did not send it back. Thanks Coolerguys for being willing to take care of your customer. 5A bit louder than I hopedCertainly moves air and keeps my computer cool. However, it's louder than any of the other fans inside my computer. So although it has significantly reduced the temperature in my computer cabinet, there is now a quiet hum at all times. At some point I will likely look for something quieter. Also, the included wood screws strip easily. You'll definitely want to pre-drill holes to mount the grille. 3ImpressedVery happy with the ease of installation and the quality of product. I was glad that the "overlap" of the metal face frame was large enough to cover my butcher cutting job (all I had was a jig saw and a dull blade to put a hole in my existing cabinet). I have 2 AV equipment failures due to overheating, so I am hoping this solves the problem. I didn't have a USB outlet in the back of my receiver, so I plugged it into my tv and it works great. very quiet operation. I was worried that the metal would squeak, but the fan blades are plastic and the front grille and back grille are metal. I would purchase from this brand again (cooler guys) as I feel the product is sturdy and well priced.**Update 2/2014** had a small issue and cooler guys customer service is GREAT! Would recommend this product and the seller "CoolerGuys" 100%! 5Moves air quietlyI was looking for a quiet fan to vent the air out of a partially enclosed computer shelf that was easy to install and quiet to operate. I have used several fans that could double as jet engine sound props in movies and spent the extra money on the computer case to quiet things down. I had seen a couple notes about humming or vibrations and was ready to perform work arounds if required, but fortunately have not had any issues with this fan. Installation took about ten minutes including grabbing tools and was very easy to follow with the instructions. Actually, if you have ever assembled or upgraded a computer, you could do this without instructions. The fan has been running almost non-stop for a few months and I have been very happy with the cooling effect, reduction of dust in the computer case, and the lack of sound. That is not to say that the fan is totally silent, but rather than I cannot discern it over the slight hum of other fans in my system. In all, I will say that this is a solid option for a cabinet mounted fan at a very reasonable price. 5
