Better In All Ways! The SMDV RFN-4s Wireless Remote SMDV RFN-4s Wireless Remote ControlI use mine on a Nikon D500: It works Great! I love this remote.I've made several thousand exposures with this remote system.I do a lot of "on tripod" landscape, nature, long telephoto, and long exposure night work.Mine stopped working, suddenly one day. I changed the "AAA cell" in the Transmitter, and all was great again.Note: AAs, AAAs, Cs, & Ds are "cells" not batteries. (Look it up!)The greatest range at which I've used this system is about 40 feet (12 meters). (More below.)I would recommend this to anyone with a Nikon with the Nikon DC0" port on their camera body. (That's DC0 (zero) port.) (More below.)The professional & high end "pro-sumer" Nikon bodies, don't have built-in receivers for IR Remotes. (IR = Infrared)You must use a remote cable, or for more distance (separation), you must use an accessory Remote Shutter Release. I'm using it on a Nikon D200 and this RFN-4s wireless remote does indeed function quite well. Before this, I was using a cable release made by Digital Concepts which after a few months use, the slide-lock to hold the button down kept slipping over the button causing a series of shots I hadn't planned on. I finally had to tape it back out of the way. This wireless, however, has a much better design and is not likely to cause such a problem. I like its compactness, though I do wish the antenna could have been engineered to NOT protrude above the camera body. Because attaching the screw mount of the receiver to the camera body is kind of difficult, I'm leaving it attached all the time. But, I had to make alterations in my camera bag's design to accommodate this feature. The only other negative comment I'll make (why I didn't give it 5 stars) has to do with the fact that it's almost entirely made of rather cheap (therefore very breakable) plastic. Why couldn't they have used more metal alloys, or at least a higher grade of plastics? I'm from the old Nikon F school of photography, when only the best, most hearty materials were employed in manufacturing quality photo equipment; tough products built to last more than a lifetime. I don't like living in a world of planned obsolescence...make things that won't last, so we'll keep buying more. Well, at least this wireless works very well for now, and I'm happy to get away from the cable release that's been so cumbersome for so long. Wireless DOES make a difference in picture quality. 4Works 100% of the time, good battery life. This is my go to remote for my Nikon D810. Can't say enough good things about it. Great range, easy to use and stow, works every time. The battery lasts a long time so be caureful- the minute you finally forget it even has a battery it will fail haha! The holder has a space for a spare battery, use it! I made a new tiny waterproof case for the unit as the factory one is really only intended as packaging and eventually broke in my bag. I use this all the time for night shooting aurora and low speed high magnification shots like the moon where the camera must be stable and you can't touch it. This unit performed flawlessly in -40F multiple times, totally worth the money. It does block one of the FN buttons on the camera body- bummer, but I'd rather have that and the body installed portion tight to the camera, and it is. Not a bad trade-off. The portion mounted on the camera uses the camera battery for power, so be careful- if you don't hit the power button on it the battery may slowly drain dead. That would be my only change, make it turn itself off after a couple hours of non-use. 5Great product! Works perfectly, and is small. I recently bought this remote for use on my Nikon D800. When shooting on a tripod, any shake of the camera, even the slight movement from a gentle push on the shutter can introduce blur, so for the clearest, sharpest pictures it's important to use a remote shutter release.In the past, I've always used a cable release, but it's a pain to put the 10-pin plug in the socket and screw it down, then remove it again for handheld shots. And on again for the tripod, then off again for walking around, again and again. What actually happens is that I abandon the cable release and put up with the motion blur from using my hands. I've tried leaving the cable release attached, but it dangles and gets caught on clothing and other gear. The same is true trying to put the camera with cable release attached into the camera bag.This device solves those problems. The receiver, which is mounted onto the 10-pin connector to the side of the DSLR, is truly diminutive. It fits into a tucked-away contour on the camera, and is quite unobtrusive. There's no problem leaving it mounted all day, and switching back and forth easily from remote to manual trigger, via the little on-off button on the receiver. Very quick and easy. And it goes right into the camera bag, still mounted on the camera, no hassle. Great!!And it works. Press the button on the transmitter halfway, and the receiver tells the camera to focus, just like with your finger on the camera's shutter release button. When the camera has acquired focus, the blue light on the transmitter goes from bright to dim. Then push the button all the way, and the blue light goes out momentarily, telling you you've successfully taken the shot. If the camera can't focus and fire, you see a red light on the transmitter, telling you to re-compose your shot for better focus.And it works fine for bracketed shots. I shoot a lot of 5-exposure HDR brackets, and this remote handles it fine, just like regular shooting. This where the remote shines brightest, because any slight movement of the camera will be most evident when several exposures are combined in HDR software.I love this thing!! I'm so glad I got it! I'm glad it exists. A few years ago, nothing like this was made -- by anybody. But here it is. It's inexpensive, and the build quality is high.Anyone needing a remote for their Nikon DSLR would not go wrong buying this product. Highly recommended. 5Really Small and Works Well This is my review after using the RFN-4s remote about a dozen times over the last three months.The new version of the RFN-4s Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Nikon DSLR with MC30 connection (available after about mid 2018) is really small. (see the picture). You can leave it on your camera while you carry it around or put it in your camera bag for shorter time periods (I'd say up to a day or two). The antenna on the camera-mounted receiver is flexible and won't break off. If you handle your camera normally there isn't a problem leaving the receiver on the camera and getting damaged.The remote is easy to use and comes with a slide-over cover at the actuation button to prevent accidental pictures being takenThe unit also comes with a small 2-section pouch to keep the remote and receiver apart. This is handy since they are so small (each is no longer than about 2 inches in length). The receiver is easy to screw on to your camera and take off. I over-tightened it the first time but learned. The receiver is powered by the camera battery so you wouldn't want to leave it on for weeks or months but the power draw appears minuscule as compared to the draw from the camera itself.I would definitely recommend this unit. It is less expensive than the OEM units, is well built, small, and works well. 5I would have given 5-stars if it had only fit! This is very frustrating to not give this Wireless Remote a 5-star rating! The Remote is brilliant in so many ways, but unfortunately has a very large Achilles Heel! The threaded retaining ring that is supposed to thread into the 10-pin remote on the D500 does not thread into the 10-pin socket as it should and the connector cannot always be inserted far enough to complete the connection, so it is intermittent in operation. When it does work right it is excellent in operation. The threaded ring on the Receiver on my sample only engages in the threads of the socket about 1/4 turn of the threads. In contrast, the Nikon WR-10A I have for my D800 threads in at least 3 complete turns and secures that remote precisely. I know of what I speak. I worked for 13 years as a Broadcast TV Engineer/Video Journalist operating and maintaining Microwave and Satellite Remote Trucks. This isn't rocket science! Precision engineering of the connector is a complex task, but the quality control here could, and should be much better! There are many reviews that mention this issue, just search "Threads". I wish I had searched before I clicked. I will be replacing my sample, hoping to get a better sample of this Remote. I measured the outside diameter of the treads on each device. the RFN-4S threads measured 9.9 mm, and the threads on the Nikon WR-A10 Remote ControllerAdapter measured 9.8 mm. 2Works with D850! I bought it to use it with my D850 and it works like a charm.I saw in many reviews that keeping the receiver attached to the camera when not using will result in battery drain, and I hate to remove and attach the receiver back every-time I want to use it - hence, what I do is I simply remove the battery from the camera when I'm not using it and I keep the receiver attached to the body all the time.I hope it helps! 5Yep, it works with the new Nikon D850 with one slight issue though NOT related to the RFN-4s. I've used the SMDV RFN-4s wireless remote shutter releases for several years and I love 'em. Small, relatively inexpensive, very lightweight and they "just work". I own two of them... and I'd buy them again tomorrow if lost or stolen.The RFN-4s DOES WORK with the D850 BUT because of the "Silent Shooting" mode in the D850, in Mup (Mirror Lock Up) mode, if you are in "Live View" using the RFN-4s, the D850 will NOT allow you to press the shutter, wait as long as you desire for camera / tripod shaking to dissipate, and then cause the remote to make the exposure by pressing the trigger again. The D850 will make the exposure immediately.I use a Tamron 150-600mm G2 variable for astrophotography. Its a large heavy lens and I often have to wait five, or more, seconds for vibration to dissipate after touching the camera / tripod. On the first push of the RFN-4s button, the D850 will automatically make the exposure without waiting for you to actuate the shutter the second time to make the exposure.If you are using the camera's viewfinder, the RFN-4s will work as it always did on various other Nikon cameras, which is a good thing because these remote shutter releases are great. The camera is doing that, not the RFN-4s.For the few people that are into astrophotography, you can just place the camera in "Live View" and "Silent Shooting" mode and use the RFN-4s to make the exposure. Since the shutter isn't moving, you'll not incur any vibration as the image is captured electronically. Just ensure that you waited long enough for the vibration to go away. Or make focus and exposure settings in "Live View", then place the camera into "through the viewfinder" mode and capture the image.Required a few hours "trial and error" to figure this out, but RFN-4s does work just fine with the D850. It does work a little "differently" than what you might be used to if you've this product previously but this seems to be because of the D850's "Silent Shooting" mode, and no "fault" of the RFN-4s.Hope this saves some people some aggravation. 5OK, works as advertised It works. The part that attaches to my camera protrudes up above the camera and makes it near impossible to put the camera in my camera bag, and even when carrying it I bump the protrusion frequently. Too bad it screws in because it does not attach and detach easily. Sometimes the attachment is flakey, the threads on the attachment piece are cheap plastic and do not screw into the camera mount snugly. Also it seems to stay powered on even after the camera is powered off, I presume it is drawing power off the camera battery? Has not really been a noticeable power drain so no biggie, but having an on/off switch or button would be nice.Due to the above mentioned issues this device stays in my camera bag unused mostly while I rely on my corded remote shutter instead. Occasionally though it's needed for a "selfie" or other situation where I need to be far away from the camera. It does work as advertised. 2Exceptional Remote Shutter (for Nikon at least) I am using the shutter for 4 years now, and I am very satisfied. I tried couple other shutters for my Nikon D300S, but they were a garbage and a waste of time & just disappointment. This one is great!Pros:1. Reliable. Works every time I use so I know I can rely on it on a trip.2. Small. Very portable.3. Half-pressing its button causes the camera to focus, and there is a pretty audible "click" sound when fixed.4. Uses 1 AAA battery which lasts long (can't say how long though!). Its receiver is powered by camera's battery, so be cognizant about that.Cons:NONE! 5
