Customer Reviews

I would recommend the x500 magnification to capture things like the eclipse ... I know basically nothing of photography; just borrowed a DSLR from a friend and needed a telephoto lens to capture the eclipse. This worked perfectly for my purposes! I would recommend the x500 magnification to capture things like the eclipse and add the x2 teleconverter for close up shots of the moon (or the sun if you put a solar filter over it). I would also recommend getting a remote to take photos as button pressing is too shaky. Again, my knowledge of photography is extremely low so I don't know what kind of problems this lens would present for a professional. But for laymen like me it was absolutely perfect. Thanks! 5Price too high? NO. Just right and does what the more expensive brands want. For the first time in 38 years my husband got a close up of the Bald Eagle flying around our home. He seems to attract wild life where ever he goes. The humming bird land right on his arms. The deer lay sleeping by the front door. The bob cat just sits there patiently while he focuses in close. Can't wait for him to print them so we can frame them and sell them. These soon will pay for themselves. 5Excellent Lens I'm a birder and like to photograph birds in the wild. However, I found that my 85-200 zoom lens with auto-focus was not powerful enough to get details I wanted of the birds. I also found that the auto-focus often times focused on something other than the birds. I purchased this 500mm lens based on the manufacturer, the inclusion of the doubler, the warranty, and the price. Big Mike's included detailed instructions and FAQ's with the package that provided excellent information for setting the lens and taking photographs. It does take some getting used to, especially if you've relied on auto-focus. I had to practice finding the subject since the field of view is smaller, but that came fairly quickly. The camera must be set on manual or shutter priority since the aperture opening is set on the lens. The nice thing about digital cameras is that I can practice a lot with different aperture settings, shutter speeds, and ISO (film speed). I found that, in good light, I can get excellent photos with a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second, aperture at f11, and ISO at 400, especially if my subject is moving. In darker conditions, 1/100th shutter speed, f8, and ISO 1600 works great. If you want to tweak things between aperture settings of f11 and f22, there is another ring on the lens that will open/close the aperture between the adjacent stops. Maximum settings are f8 and f32. With this lens, I've taken some great pictures of birds, both while stationary and flying. I also used the doubler and took shots of the supermoon with the camera mounted on a tripod. I'm very satisfied with this purchase and with the support provided by Big Mike's. 5Can't beat it for the price. First, be aware this is a 100% manual lens. You must put your camera into "Manual" mode, as it doesn't have the correct contacts for it to work with Auto Focus or other automated settings. This also means you must focus by hand, and manually set your aperture and shutter speed. Also, this is a cheap lens so it's not going to have the solid feel of a better lens. The lack of weight also means you can easily bump or shake the lens, even when on a tripod. Using a remote shutter trigger is highly recommended. That said, if you have some basic skills with a camera and a bit of patience, you can get remarkably good photos with this. I personally wanted to pick up something to capture photos of the recent eclipse without spending a million dollars on a comparable size AF lens. While the photos I ended up with are not world-class quality, I'm more than happy with them for the minimal amount of expense and prep I put into it. 4Good value for the money This is my first attempt shooting the Moon, in the city, with plenty of light around and a very cheap tripod, which shakes at every wind breeze, and I'm pleased about the result and surprised about how easy it was to set up everything. 5Good for the money This does take some practice using, but practice pays off. If you're afraid of manual focus, this is not the lens for you. If you want to learn a new skill, buy it. I'm sure the really expensive ones will give you better results, but for my needs, this one is just fine. One thing that has come out of learning manual focus.....I use it more than auto-focus now. Who'd have thunk it? 4A decent lens at a VERY reasonable price... I recently ordered this lens: it arrived on time and well packaged. I have taken several test shots with the 500mm alone, and with the 2x teleconverter attached (1000mm). I have no issues with the lens and the results so far have been encouraging.Instructions that come with the lens are easy to understand. The lens is fully manual, meaning you have to set both the aperture and focus "by hand". This is not a 'knock' on the lens: it was clearly identified as manual. (Note: put your camera in 'Manual' mode and set the shutter speed there). The aperture is easily set, so that isn't an issue. The focus is another matter. At such a high magnification, the slightest movement or vibration of the lens (like while turning the focus ring) makes the image in the viewfinder 'jump all over' (and the small size of the viewfinder on my Nikon camera doesn't help!) To be fair however, my tripod is of light-weight construction and not very stable to start with--I'm confident that with a solid mount, the focusing would be much easier.Anyone wanting to experiment with long lenses should consider this one: I find it to be a reasonably inexpensive way to do so and look forward to using it to advance my knowledge of photography. 4Replacement works like a charm. The first lens was defective Big Mike's sent me another lens and I'm very happy with it. Also I am hearing impaired and they showed a great deal of patience with me which was greatly appreciated. 5Good Buy! This f 8 lens works well with plenty of available light. The more you are familiar with shooting manually and adjusting for lower light conditions, the more you will enjoy the lens. I was able to shoot from a monopod without using a remote and produced nice sharp photos with even exposure throughout. I like the large knurled focus ring. Its snug but smooth throughout and helps locate focus quicker and more accurately. Frankly, at the price of this lens I didnt have much hope that it would produce acceptable images but, it does. If you shoot in any modes(such as "auto") that allows the cameras software to make decisions on settings, you probably wont enjoy this lens unless you have high levels of light available. Otherwise I recommend it if you want to get some nice wildlife shots without spending thousands of $ on a lens with larger aperture capability and automatic focus. 5This is a 100% manual lens that puts the fun back in photography The recent Super Blood Wolf Lunar eclipse was the reason I purchased this lens. I have a Nikon D7500 and wanted to capture this astronomical event. The lens arrived exactly as shown with the T adapter and a few pages of instructions. It is a monster lens and needs to be firmly mounted on a VERY sturdy tripod or even the slightest movement from wind etc will cause camera shake. As I have read in some of the questions, you MUST put your camera in Manual mode and the switch on the body of the camera must also be placed to M and not AF.I had to take several test images to achieve good focus on the moon as it is very sensitive at such a long focal length. Once focus is achieved it stays in that position easily so refocusing is not necessary for astronomical uses. The instructions do say that the only way to get a proper exposure is by adjusting shutter speed and ISO settings. If your not familiar with the manual workings of your camera, there may be some difficulty in getting the results you want. With some trial and error the is an AMAZING lens for the price. I would purchase again and now I dont need to, it's part of my camera bag going forward.I attached a montage of the Lunar eclipse with said results. As mentioned earlier about camera shake, when using this lens I recommend using the Mirror Up function to reduce shake and a VERY sturdy tripod is a must! The use of a remote trigger is also highly recommended for shutter speed less than 1/1000th sec. 5
